Best type of laundry detergent? Liquid, gel, powder etc?

What’s the best type? Always used liquid as I prefer it but am buying a new machine (my Beko has given up after 6 years so done okay I think). Want to know what’s the best type to use for my new and expensive machine?!

Thanks Eco. I've just checked and I've got loads so it'll be spring by the time I change. Don't think I've ever used Aldi's powder tbh, but it's a long time since I used powder anyway. And I have a different washing machine now, so we'll see.

Thank you MsMamaNature

Eco egg all the way!

I switched to powder and tried persil then switched to Tesco bio, both made. The clothes feel harsher and made us itch so back to Ariel liguid

Im a big fan of Asda own brand washing powder tablets, they come in packs of 20 washes with 2 tablets per pack, unwrap and straight into the drum.

They come in Sensitive non-bio and Moonflower and Lavender which is a 2 in 1. £2.28 for a box of 40 tablets so 2 per wash works at 5.7p each so around 11p per wash load. I use the scented one and no fabric conditioner needed.

I used to use pods/liquid/powder boxes however I have carers who end up putting the washing machine on at least once a day and it was very variable how much was being used, the pods weren't good as a couple of people it seems were lifting them out with wet hands and so several were disintegrating in each box so was a waste,

the liquid was always variable as well as some were very generous and some just literally showed it the bottle,

the powder was getting wet all the time too and being wasted so I have a small tin box with lid for washing tablets (Home Bargains) and it fits 3 packs inside without the cardboard box.

Have a matching box for dishwasher tablets and another similar box for cat treats - its cream with paws over it so I dont get mixed up

When I used those two tablet packs I only used to put one in and it was always fine.

Thanks all. I may switch to powder then 😊 my Beko lasted 6 years so it did okay but I admit it has smelt quite often (so freshened with vinegar and soda crystals) and it has had problems with spinning/draining for a couple years!

I think I will stick to my persil non bio though.. I know it doesn’t make me itch!

Powder for us - but only use just over half of the recommend amount, is that wrong?

FamilyOfAliens · 02/01/2019 19:47

Smol mini capsules. I tried a free sample through MN and have never looked back.

Elderflower14 · 02/01/2019 20:06

Def powder. Our washing machine guy said to change and our machine doesn't smell half as bad as it used to.

e1y1 · 03/01/2019 08:22

Powder - without exception.

BoffinMum · 04/01/2019 05:55

Remember to do a monthly 90C wash with bio powder and just a hand towel in there to maintain the machine. Stops then getting smelly and keeps pipes clear.

I got a new washing machine in April and have a Miele one with built in detergent cartridges. They are fantastic but have too much bleach for dark jersey items, so I use the Miele colours or darks liquid for those. Absolutely fantastic results.,

Do people put the powder in the drum or the drawer? We used to use the powder tablets & put them straight in the drum but found anything dark had powder marks on so switched to liquid.
Prefer powder though as it comes in a cardboard box so I'm going to give it a try again.

dementedpixie · 04/01/2019 08:18

I put it in the drawer

NannyR · 04/01/2019 09:51

I put it in the drum, on top of the clothes. I've never had a problem with doing it this way and it keeps the drawer much cleaner, less gungy. However it does warn on my box (lidl formil) to only use the drawer and avoid direct contact with clothes.

Powder. I use an old plastic beaker DDs baby cup for a scoop.
