IRONING: What to iron and NOT iron?

WheelyCoteClaus · 22/12/2018 08:07

Currently facing an ironing monster pile..bleughhh.

What do you iron and what do you fold? And for the things you don't fold...how do you get them looking crease free?

At the minute I iron everything except

Underwear
Duvet covers
Socks

I do minimum possible. If it doesn't really have any creases I don't iron it.

blackcat86 · 22/12/2018 08:14

I don't iron anything except shirts.

welshweasel · 22/12/2018 08:14

Iron everything other than underwear, bedding, towels.

MyNewBearTotoro · 22/12/2018 08:14

Generally I don’t iron anything. I have a handful of formal items (shirts, dresses) that need ironing but I hang them up creased and only iron them before actually wearing.

PotteringAlong · 22/12/2018 08:15

I iron 2 work dresses on a Sunday night. DH irons 5 work shirts. Absolutely nothing else.

MeetOnTheSIedge · 22/12/2018 08:16

I don't iron any household stuff (bed linen, teatowels etc). Don't iron nightwear, underwear, sportswear. DD mostly wears leggings and jumpers at this time of year, they don't need ironing.

I only iron school shirts, teeshirts and some other tops (not jumpers or cardigans), jeans. DH does his own.

Knittink · 22/12/2018 08:23

I don't iron anything except very occasionally as a one-off if I'm about to wear it and it's particularly creased. I hang stuff up or tumble dry it and it's fine.

WheelyCoteClaus · 22/12/2018 08:26

I love you lot! I'm missing tricks...pls share..

How do you get away without ironing jeans?? Don't they look creased?

What about tshirts??

Hoodies?

I'm starting to go through the MONSTER pile and see what I can avoid ironing

I iron everything except underwear. (I hate sleeping on un-ironed sheets)

Everything is folded in a particular way to fit in drawers/cupboards unless it is to be hung up. Things that are hung up are dresses, skirts, trousers, shorts and non-school shirts. (of which DS seems to have a 100!) All school uniform is folded and sits on shelves in wardrobes.

Everything is sorted first into piles for different family members and I even order things so that Jeans/trousers etc are at the bottom of the pile, then jumpers, then t-shirts and finally PJs. School uniform goes into separate piles. I find it a lot less overwhelming if things are sorted and folded prior to ironing. (It usually looks a lot less that way!)

Once it’s done it sits in person-specific piles on the sofa and each person is expected to put their own items away as soon as possible.

The most infuriating thing in this house is the DTs have a terrible habit of taking their freshly ironed clothes and just shoving them in their (admittedly overfull) drawers thereby crushing them before they are even worn.

Gotthetshirt23 · 22/12/2018 08:27

I don't own an iron

Chocolateismynemesis · 22/12/2018 08:28

It’s the underwear sorting I hate! I would take the ironing basket over the underwear basket any day!

NonaGrey · 22/12/2018 08:29

I iron (or DH irons) everything except underwear and technical
sportswear.

I have a super duper steam iron though which makes it pretty quick.

Fairylea · 22/12/2018 08:31

Only iron shirts.

Everything else is either tumbled and folded as soon as it’s finished or taken straight out of washing machine, shaken really hard and then hung on hangers.

Pashazade · 22/12/2018 08:33

T-shirt's folded as soon as they come out of the drier or off the line. Shirts popped on the back of a chair, I used to do this from damp and let them air dry on hangers but actually they come out of the dryer less creased, if we have a special occasion then the appropriate garment will be ironed before hand if needed. Trousers are folded, jeans too. Life is too short.

whiteroseredrose · 22/12/2018 08:36

Iron only shirts. Jeans, t shirts etc given a shake and straighten before hanging to dry.

Youmadorwhat · 22/12/2018 08:40

I iron clothing only
So no
Bedding
Towels
Underwear
Pjs
Vests

Knittink · 22/12/2018 08:48

Either flatten them out and hang to dry or tumble dry. Sometimes they might still be a tiny bit creased - I find the trick is not to give a monkey's. Grin

RandomUsernameHere · 22/12/2018 08:48

I only iron DH's work shirts, nothing else. The DC's school shirts come out looking fine, they are the John Lewis non iron ones.

justforareply · 22/12/2018 09:06

Smooth and fold from tumble dryer
Non-iron Eterna shirts
I've ironed one thing since moved into new house 5 years ago and DD surprised I had an iron Smile

DearPrudence · 22/12/2018 09:36

I don't iron underwear, bedding, towels, and the odd dress that dries on a pulley and goes straight on a hanger.

I iron t-shirts, pyjamas etc one side only. They still look ironed but it's incredibly quick. Shirts get ironed properly but DH does his own unless I'm feeling very kind.

Grinchly · 22/12/2018 09:45

I iron nothing. I have an old fashioned pulley dryer in the kitchen. Hang everything on that and creases drop out.

My mother martyred herself with housework, even ironing dusters and knickers. So I dont iron or do any housework. That is outsourced to my lovely cleaner.

poshredrose · 22/12/2018 09:48

I iron school uniform and work uniform for me. Occasionally another shirt if one of the kids has been to a party.
I buy enough uniform for clean every day then iron it all at once on a Sunday, watching something on Netflix.

Theoryofmould · 22/12/2018 09:59

I iron absolutely nothing anymore. I too either smooth and fold straight from the tumble dryer. Dh will iron his work shirts but that's it.

squashyhat · 22/12/2018 10:02

No ironing in this house apart from work clothing just before it is worn and holiday packing. Creases in jeans soon drop out. Ditto t-shirts (or they are worn under a jumper or fleece so don't show).

Waddsup12 · 22/12/2018 10:02

Nothing, I don't even know where the iron is kept. I look permanently rumpled.
