IRONING: What to iron and NOT iron?

WheelyCoteClaus · 22/12/2018 08:07

Currently facing an ironing monster pile..bleughhh.

What do you iron and what do you fold? And for the things you don't fold...how do you get them looking crease free?

At the minute I iron everything except

Underwear
Duvet covers
Socks

Its all to do with the dryer. I hang washing on racks in the Utility Room. Into dryer while mildly damp.Stay close by. Fold immediately. If a bit creased when comes to wearing fire into the dryer for one minute before popping on. Same with jeans. Only iron shirts that are worn with a suit. Put sheets / covers into dryer and immediately back on bed.
My only problem is losing socks. One million odd socks but no creases in sight.
I iron a dress but only when l'm going to wear it. Leave them hanging in the wardrobe until then.

dementedpixie · 22/12/2018 18:38

I iron shirts and schoolwear and nothing else. I don't have a tumble dryer so clothes dry on airers. Shirts hang on hangers to dry. Once dry t- shirts/ tops are hung up and put away and other clothes are folded and put in drawers.

megletthesecond · 22/12/2018 18:41

No ironing in this house.
Everything is hung up to dry, often on the washing line, then hung in wardrobes.
I'd iron if I needed a crisp shirt or suit but that hardly ever happens.

CarlGrimesMissingEye · 22/12/2018 20:23

I iron school uniform. Everything else gets hung up. We iron as we go if something still needs it on wearing. DH sorts his own work stuff and irons that.

Drogosnextwife · 22/12/2018 20:24

I iron shirts and school uniform, for some reason it's always so creased which is a pain in the arse!

Annasgirl · 28/12/2018 14:13

I used to be like you. Then I realised no one else I knew ironed anything!!! The trick is to tumble dry and fold immediately. I now only iron the odd shirt - DH sometimes irons his but often not if he can get away with it under a jumper- and sometimes kids uniform if it comes out creased. That’s it. I hang all my good clothes to dry and they don’t crease. Thankfully kids wear school tracksuits 2-5 days a week (reduces as they get older).

I used to be of the "if it's good enough to wash, its good enough to iron" club, would even iron underwear and socks Blush only thing I didn't iron was towels (flattens them). This was despite having a tumble dryer since childhood.

The trick is the tumble dryer, fold IMMEDIATELY when done and barely nothing needs ironing.

I do think sometimes am I being a slob and should I still be ironing?

But if didn't tumble dry, I would absolutely have to iron, I just could not iron if I air dry.

LiveSleepSnore · 28/12/2018 17:06

I iron nothing then decide if it needs doing the day before it is to be worn.

Cotton shirts are the most likely to be ironed, except in cold weather when they'll be under a jumper!

Last thing ironed was a tutorial session with a teenager plus shirt heading off to a party.

Our jeans probably look creased to you. I just can't imagine ironing jeans.

I don't let wet clothes sit and I'm very careful to shake stuff out and hang things so they don't get creased during the laundry process iyswim so I suppose that is in itself a little time consuming. But it's ingrained habit.

AutoFilled · 28/12/2018 17:08

I iron nothing except iron on label for school. Maybe I look scruffy but who cares.

EggysMom · 28/12/2018 17:11

I totally agree.

To iron - hemming tape
Not iron - everything else

DogMamma · 28/12/2018 17:12

I only iron bedding before I put it away Other wise I iron as I need. DH and dss are the worst I.used to iron everything then put away. But they would go digging through wardrobes and drawers and crease everything so would need ironing again. Now I.just fold/hang put and put away. If it needs ironing before wearing no problem if I have time of I don't tough shit do it yourself wear something else... Grin

HouseOfGoldandBones · 28/12/2018 17:18

I iron absolutely nothing after the wash.

School shirts & trousers are hung up as soon as they come out the dryer (M&S no iron shirts)

DH irons his own shirts for work.

I hang my clothes up & if they need a quick iron, I do it there and then (I have a small flip down ironing board on the back of one of my wardrobe doors, so no faffing)

And, because I am lazy, the laundrette does my bedding.

Celebelly · 28/12/2018 17:23

We moved house a year ago and our iron is still in a box in the garage somewhere Grin

BackforGood · 28/12/2018 17:31

Our iron comes out if someone is going to a wedding or maybe an interview.

'How do people not look creased?'

Take out of tumble drier, shake and hang up
If can't tumble dry then shake and hang to dry on a hanger
Don't leave sitting around in a pile to get creased after it is dry
Does help if you avoid some materials.

Melroses · 28/12/2018 17:45

I had an ironing pile disaster going on, and my friend came round and folded it all up and put it away. You can't tell the difference Grin.

(Now I have a bit of a folding pile disaster going on...…………..Hmm )

Melroses · 28/12/2018 17:49

I made a dress out of Liberty linen. I thought that was going to be a bugger, so I hung it on a coat hanger from the dining room ceiling (roof ties) and in a couple of hours, it was dry - I ironed the collar and pockets but could have got away with it.

Unfortunately, next time, DH got his hands on it and baked it in full sun for 6 hours Angry.

HotInWinter · 28/12/2018 18:07

I iron work shirts, school shirts, and 2 tops I have.

If I'm line drying, shake and peg carefully. Fold carefully when bringing in,
If I'm tumbling, get to drier fairly soon after it finishes, and fold carefully.
