How/ where do you store your suitcases?

Hello,

I'd like to have ideas on how/ where to store our suitcases. They are taking a lot of much needed space in our house and I can't figure out an efficient way to store them. We have loads, small ones inside big ones, etc. so the question is where/ how to store the big ones really.

I'd love to know how you do that at home, for inspiration.

Thanks

PS: they are used once a year.

If you have a loft that’s the best place to store them. I really thought that’s what everyone did until I read this thread!

dontcallmelen · 19/11/2018 18:47

In the loft, we have a couple of samsonite hard shell cases which are quite large & fit through the loft hatch ok, would think loft the most sensible place especially as you only use them once a year, unless you have loads of unused cupboard space.

SnuggyBuggy · 19/11/2018 18:47

I'm very grateful the previous owners of our house put some cubby holes in the loft conversion, I would look into this in the long run

Justabadwife · 19/11/2018 18:51

Ours are dumped in the spare room, the smaller one is inside the bigger one.
They we're cheepy ones from Argos, and are looking a bit worn. I want some hard case ones with 4 wheels (I'm always envious of people with 4 wheeled suitcases, and how they move their suitcases with such smugness😂😂) but I haven't seen any nice ones that come in a nice set (that fit inside each other).

Aragog · 19/11/2018 18:58

Ours are in the loft. Big and small. Dh gets them down when we go away. They are needed around 4-5 times a year; smaller ones sometimes more.

Aragog · 19/11/2018 18:59

Oh and hate spiders etc too. One of reasons dh always gets them. Plus we now spray the loft and surrounding area with spider x which hopefully minimises the chances.

Oblomov18 · 19/11/2018 19:05

Ours are in the loft.

Oblomov18 · 19/11/2018 19:07

I too can't believe you haven't looked in the loft.

That loft door picture is huge, or normal at least!

Parker231 · 19/11/2018 19:09

THey are in one of the cupboards in the laundry room. They get used regularly so it’s convenient they are kept on the same floor as our bedroom and the laundry.

Big ones in the loft, hand luggage size at bottom of fitted wardrobe, along with various sized soft bags for weekends away.

GiantKitten · 19/11/2018 19:20

Nest of 3 on top of wardrobe in bedroom (wardrobes not properly built in & ceiling fairly high. Cats like to sleep up there)

Also have a couple of cabin bags on top of freestanding double in another bedroom.

@Justabadwife I love the smug twirly 4-wheelers too but I don’t trust baggage handlers not to break the wheels (has happened to adult DD’s cases) so I stick to the 2-wheelers with semi-recessed wheels which are much-more-robust-touch-wood.

But if you’re determined, have a look at the IT luggage in Matalan Smile

I store my summer clothes in them in winter and winter clothes in them in summer, they go in the loft.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 19/11/2018 19:50

Attic, along with all the christmas, halloween and easter decorations, hundreds of DH's CDs that he doesn't use any more, memory boxes, tools, and various other boxes of random crap. Attics rock. You really should make use of it. And I've never seen a spider in ours.

Justabadwife · 19/11/2018 19:52

Ooh thanks @giantkitten.
That is a worry about the wheels 🤔🤔.

ItsABeatifulDayNow · 19/11/2018 20:22

I don't have much storage space so I pop anything not regularly used (e.g. Scarves / winter clothes during summer) inside them and pop in the wardrobe - two jobs in one!

BackforGood · 19/11/2018 20:35

A tiny space under the roof... not much use I reckon...

er, yes, that is what a loft is
Same as what PickaChew posted upthread - a loft is a pokey space in the rafters, accessed by a small hatch in the ceiling.
It is a useful space to stick things you only use once a year - suitcases and Christmas decorations I'd have thought in most people's homes.

GiantKitten · 19/11/2018 21:07

I think, tbf, OP is comparing a proper attic room with the kind of small low loft area you can’t stand up or walk in. They are different!

Dotty1970 · 19/11/2018 21:09

Suitcases used very little are in the loft, in one suitcase I keep all the travel things such as travel kettle, lilo etc.
Luggage for weekends away etc are in the bottom of a wardrobe

CherryPavlova · 19/11/2018 21:12

My work ones go in one of the wardrobes but my husband has one on a chest in the bedroom most of the time -but he’s away for one or two nights most weeks.
Holiday ones are stacked inside each other and stored in a designated luggage cupboard that sits between two bedrooms.

BroomstickOfLove · 19/11/2018 21:17

Yep. Our loft can fit a couple of boxes and that's about it. The house is an end terrace, so the roof is all slope, and most of the space is filled with insulation. And the hatch to get in is a space less than metre square at the top of a flight of stairs, so putting up a step ladder underneath to climb up is, frankly, terrifying.

Bluntness100 · 19/11/2018 21:21

Are they huge cases or something? I can't believe you guys haven't checked the loft, if you use them once a year then that would be the best place for them, at least try.

KitKat1985 · 19/11/2018 21:21

We have a large shed / summerhouse that we use for storage for things such as suitcases.

PickAChew · 19/11/2018 21:55

That loft door in the picture is only 1' wide. And there's not much space about it because our house is similar to this.

I imagine a lot of newbuilds have similar issues, with bedrooms right up in the roof space.

Hi all! Glad to see that my thread is still generating interest!

I need to clarify a few points:

I am not confusing between loft and attic; I wish we had an attic. The loft in our house is apparently tiny as my husband told me before we moved here that (according to what he was told) we could fit nothing in it. That said I will try to have a look for myself in the near future if possible...though I am not optimistic about its capacity to hold anything...
