Limescale in the loo

DidIEatThat · 15/10/2018 17:28

Hi all,
I've just moved in and the loo is covered in timescale under the waterline.

I have shoved all manner of chemical connuctions down there and it's just not shifting. Bleach, toilet cleaner with limescale remover, a different toilet cleaner from Homebase promising timescale action. Viakal and scrubbing with marigolds on today and this duck toilet with limescale remover has been sat in it the past hour but I'm not holding much hope.

Would anyone be able to recommend a limescale cleaner that works below the water line, or how to drain a toilet so I can apply one that doesn't ( and which will actually work)

Or failing this, how much a plumber and a new toilet should cost. Grin

Thanks all!

You can bail all the water out with a small pot. Just saw something called killrock gel which sounded interesting although I havent tried it. Its a thick gel you paint in.

NotAnotherJaffaCake · 15/10/2018 17:44

Citric acid, you can buy it off Amazon. Whack a good slug down the toilet and leave overnight.

girlsyearapart · 15/10/2018 17:47

Spirits of salt you can buy it from the chemist or off amazon it’s only thing that works on ours
You pour some down shut the lid quick and leave it

I use a tablet thing. I think it harpic put it in and it all fizzes up most of it will be off after about 30 mins then I scrub the rest off. I get mine from Morrison's they are in a black box.

Mumof1andacat · 15/10/2018 17:53

Bail the water out an sun using a paste made up of bicarbonate of soda and a little water. Takes a bit of scrubing but worked on mine

Hidingtonothing · 15/10/2018 17:55

Harpic Power in the black bottle. Our loos were brown with lime scale when we moved in as house had been empty for ages, tried everything before I found this stuff. Full bottle down loo before bed, it will be gone by morning Smile

Emus · 15/10/2018 17:56

We have terrible limescale and have used all Kilrock and Harpic limescale tablets, liquid and gel. We've had more success with this (cheaper versions available): Cleaning Block 10028EI WC Cleaning Tool with Handle https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0185LZ500/ref=cmswwrcppapi_DymXBb609VNWK (hopefully the link will be clicky).

Thank you all. I'll order / buy some stuff in and let you and report back tomorrow.

Black Harlic Power tablets, left in overnight and then scrubbed before flushing. Bloody miraculous.

Fishcakey · 15/10/2018 17:59

Pour loads of cheap Coca Cola down there and leave it overnight.

bibbitybobbitytired · 15/10/2018 19:31

Harpic power.
Our loos were brown under the waterline when we moved in.
Every night before bed we would put some down. Within a week they were all white again.

bibbitybobbitytired · 15/10/2018 19:32

Domestos zero also did the same thing.
As long as it says on the bottle that it works on limescale below the waterline.

OhMyGodTheyKilledKenny · 15/10/2018 19:34

Harpic Power Max in the black bottles is amazing stuff.

ItchySeveredFoot · 15/10/2018 19:35

Definitely citric acid crystals. Leave in over night and it just wipes clean in the morning.

Place marking for your handy tips!!

CarolineForbes · 15/10/2018 19:46

This worked in one go after a year of trying to remove limescale in the bowl. We’ve also had two different cleaners in that time and they hadn’t managed to shift it either with whatever they used!

I had this when we moved in and tried everything including caustic soda.

Eventually I bailed the water out and filled with vinegar. Left over night and it was all gone in the morning. House smelt like a chip shop but I was too happy with a clean loo to care.

Efferlunt · 15/10/2018 20:15

Those tablet things seem to work when nothing else will

Cla835 · 15/10/2018 20:16

drain the water from the bottom of the bowl. Make a solution of bicarb of soda and coke a cola. leave over night and should shift most of it. May have to repeat if needed.

YetAnotherUser · 16/10/2018 17:58

Black harpic for the win! Push the water down with a bog brush or bail it out (leave enough in to stop the air getting up) and use liberally.
Do that every night, brush and flush in the morning for a week and it'll be like new.

I did this on the loo in my old flat, it had been seriously neglected and was brown under the water and around the rim. There were massive chunks of scale falling out from under the rim every flush until it cleared up!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 18/10/2018 16:11

I poured a bottle of Coke (came with a take-away meal) down our loo. It turned the limescale brown so actually looked worse Hmm

The Astonish loo tablets are good

doctorbarbie · 18/10/2018 18:39

Spirits of Salts is the best stuff. Leave it in the loo overnight and in the morning it's all gone. When I moved here, the loo had a layer of limescale so thick I used to bale out all the water and chip chunks out with a knife. It was very satisfying but very time consuming. I poured the spirit of salts down and ta dah it disappeared.

Madratlady · 18/10/2018 18:42

Citric avid. We moved into a house which had a loo caked in limescale and citric acid got rid of it all.

Notagainagainagain · 18/10/2018 18:45

Another vote for harpic here. Worked for us. Good luck!

CutesyUserName · 19/10/2018 12:35

Having bought it after recommendations on here, I can vouch for Black Harpic. It's removed more limescale than any of the 157 previous methods I've tried.
