Are miele's really worth it?

Our washing machine has bust. Looking at spending £800 on a Miele.
But that feels obsene. I'm prepared to do it if it means that our washing is going to be loads cleaner and we have reliability (our old machine was pretty pants, and we don't have a tumble dryer).

But if it's not all that, and as likely to break in 4 years as any machine, I'd rather save the money.

Can any one advise?

When we moved into our current home, we inherited a Miele dishwasher that was 23 years old. It carried on working for another 4 years at which point we had a new kitchen fitted. We decided to buy a new Miele dishwasher on the basis that the last one had been so good. We're a year in.....only time will tell if it was worth the extra outlay! ☺

Trumpton · 02/07/2018 08:47

My Miele washing machine is 13 years old . I would buy another in a heartbeat !

endoftether82 · 02/07/2018 08:59

Ok, this is really helpful, thank you!

I've just been put off by someone I spoke to at an online distributor, who said that even Miele's can break, and essentially, that I was being silly spending £800 on a washing machine.

It was a strange sales tactic!

When you buy your machine, please check the guarantee supplied by the manufacturer for availability of spare parts. Miele historically has provided very long (lifetime?) guarantees of spare part availability, meaning the machines can be mended forever. This is where other excellent brands of washing machines, such as Siemens, vary: Siemens typically guarantees 8 years of spare parts. If something goes wrong after that, you may not be able to replace the part.

I quite like upgrading my machines! So I am not bothered about Miele longevity and prefer Siemens.

Got a Miele tumble dryer , 19 years and still going strong

endoftether82 · 02/07/2018 09:09

Ooh that's useful user. I'll check that.

I've heard Bosch are really good. I guess I don't really understand why there's such a massive price difference. Especially if they're now all operate by motherboards etc, that can basically break really easily.

The massive difference in price is due to the quality of the individual parts! Some machines are uneconomic or almost impossible to mend ever, whereas others are composed of really great quality parts that you can change almost endlessly. German machines are renowned for good reason, as the parts are good and the idea is for mechanics to mend/replace bits that go wrong.

endoftether82 · 02/07/2018 09:23

Thanks so much, that makes sense!

I've just had a look and parts waranty only seems to be 5 years!

We bought one 14 years ago average 2 washes a day only just broke, another good thing is that they are so quiet, we have ours next to where we eat and does not disturb us even on spin cycle

magimedi · 02/07/2018 09:36

Last Miele dishwasher lasted 22 years & 5 moves & it may still be going as left it when moved (again!). Washing machine (Miele) currently 12 years old & going fine,.

One bit of advice I got from a repair man was to buy either bottom of any range or very top. The middle range is not worth the extra. I've always gone for bottom of range.

cocopops · 02/07/2018 09:36

I had a Miele fridge freezer and it was always breaking down. I eventually got fed up with paying for it to be fixed and bought an AEG instead. I think there are duff ones, like any brand. Make sure you take out an extended warranty!

Wiifitmama · 02/07/2018 09:41

We have Miele in all our appliances except fridge/freezer. And that is because they do not do american style ones. Our appliances are all about 8 years old now and still going strong. Our washing machine is on twice a day every weekday and about 4 times a day at weekends. And I stuff it full and generally abuse it. I would not buy anything except Miele now, though I doubt I will have to replace anything for a very very long time! (We have WM, Dryer, Dishwasher, hoover).

endoftether82 · 02/07/2018 09:49

For those of you who own miele washing machines, are you able to say specifically what is so good about them? What elevates them above any other washing machine you may have had?

Onynx · 02/07/2018 10:16

I do not have any experience of Miele washing machines but from recent experience with a vacuum cleaner I will never, ever again buy anything from Miele. Their customer service is absolutely appalling. Spare parts are far more expensive than any other brand- so in my opinion do not purchase!

WifeofDarth · 02/07/2018 11:19

We have a miele washing machine. Was advised to buy best brand and compromise on the model, so we have the most basic model. It has been worth the investment (600 £ IIRC) because it spins really well, good selection of wash options and (touch wood touch wood touch wood touch wood) has not needed an engineer in the (almost) 10 years we've had it. And it's been well used (wah able nappies for 2 dc for a start)

Cynderella · 02/07/2018 22:50

When my third child was weeks old, our washing machine packed up and I bought a Miele washing machine on two years' interest free credit. In all the time we've owned it, we've not had an issue with it. It's boil washed nappies for my last two children and washed for between four and seven people day after day without complaint.

Son #3 is in his late twenties now.

You don’t need to spend £800 for Miele

EcoCleaner · 02/07/2018 23:24

Miele pro’s:
Reliable (ours is 10 years old)
Quiet
Good program selection.
The cottons cycle weighs the load so it knows how long to take and how much water to use - literally set and forget.
Long guarantee. Check the Miele website as some have 5 and 10 year warranties

EcoCleaner · 02/07/2018 23:26

This one has 5 years parts and labour

Have had Miele washing machine and dryer for 15 years - use washer frequently 5 times a day ... still going strong!

notapizzaeater · 02/07/2018 23:35

Love my Miele, when I bought it I was doing 3/4 loads a day and then the machine used the least water / electric so I decided that saving alone would cover the extra cost. Mine is now we years old and never had a problem.

NotClear · 03/07/2018 00:03

I've often wondered why Miele don't do much in the way of integrated washing machines, and then the penny dropped that the sort of people who can probably afford them are likely to never have them integrated in the kitchen, but would have enough space to have a utility room! So no need for integrated machine.

Jonbb · 03/07/2018 00:06

Yes.

Dibbosteme · 03/07/2018 00:10

We have a Miele tumble dryer which we purchased 18 years ago. We kept in the garage for many years, but now it is in a shed. It has never once needed repair and performs on a daily basis. Worth every penny. Prior to this we bought cheap tumble dryers, which didn't have the same functions and needed to be replaced regularly.
