What do you have between your mattress and your sheet?

I’m about to buy a new mattress. I’ve always had a mattress topper but it has lost all its fluff and become ridged.

My question is what is better, a mattress protector or a blanket? Do people even still use blankets under sheets?

My favourite was a sheepskin topper.. but it did make the bedroom smell a bit.... rural....

Otherwise, I just have the sheet - no topper, no blanket (that takes me back to my nan!), but I have a latex mattress over springs, so it's kind of a built-in topper, and it has a washable cover.

The kids both have toppers, and one still a waterproof sheet.

ScreamingValenta · 28/03/2018 17:39

Quilted mattress topper. I never notice it's there - it's just to prevent the mattress getting stained.

Time40 · 28/03/2018 17:43

Blanket. Mattress toppers are horrible, hot, weird-feeling things.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 28/03/2018 17:45

I have a down mattress topper, it's like sleeping on clouds.

About four grand in cash and a passport under a false name.

Arsing about aside, a mattress protector. It's one of those quilted washable ones. From John Lewis. I don't know what's in it; cotton possibly. It has some waterproofing capability I believe.

We bought a very expensive mattress from Heal's and the protector has definitely helped extend its life. The mattress is over six years old now and still looks new when I take the protector off.

CastielIsMyAngel · 28/03/2018 17:46

Memory foam mattress topper

bellsbuss · 28/03/2018 17:46

Mattress protector , it was an expensive mattress

SimonBridges · 28/03/2018 18:27

See it was a filled one from John Lewis that we had. It’s only a couple of years old but it is now very uncomfortable.

Gel cooling pads fucking hot flushes

SporkInTheToaster · 28/03/2018 19:07

Machine washable waterproof (but not plasticky) mattress protector. It is quite thick but manages not to be clammy or sweaty or feel like one of those horrible plastic bed wetting sheets that you used to get. It came from soak and sleep. I bought it to protect the mattress in general but also to protect from menorrhagia leakage (TMI). Mattress is pristine.

Greenhouseonthehill · 28/03/2018 19:08

Nothing. Maybe I should have.

PlayingForKittens · 28/03/2018 19:19

One of those hippy chick tencel waterproof covers so theoretically it doesn't add to sweating. I get fucking horrible night sweats and regularly wake up soaking so my poor mattress needs protection. Actually it needs replacing. It is around 9 years old and has had various incontinent or vomiting children and very leaky boobs to contend with over the years as well as my sweat.

RingtheBells · 28/03/2018 20:36

An electric blanket and a mattress protector

notthe1Parrot · 28/03/2018 21:02

A non-filled (ie basic) waterproof mattress-protector from JL - about £20 for a double a few years ago. Usually last a good few years.

Laucu · 29/03/2018 06:34

Two thin mattress toppers.

The kids have a brolly sheet and a mattress topper.

mommybear1 · 29/03/2018 08:37

A mattress protector- we have a 5 month old who just waits till he gets to our bed to get sick Grin. Pre baby we still used these to help prolong the life of the mattress I get washable ones from John Lewis or Dunelm hotel range. Well worth it but I do have 2 per bed so you can strip and remake without having to wait for the protector to dry etc

Buglife · 29/03/2018 08:46

A waterproof mattress protector after my potty training child did a huge wee on our bed and we couldn’t sleep on it for days (memory foam, it soaked right in). It will help when I leak from everywhere

Buglife · 29/03/2018 08:46

After DC2 is born! Pressed post too early 😂

Coldhandscoldheart · 29/03/2018 08:49

Waterproof mattress protector as I’m still fountaining milk in a regular basis. After that I think I fancy one if the slightly padded cotton ones.

VanGoghsDog · 30/03/2018 00:39

Normal quilted mattress protector. If the weather gets really cold, an extra duvet on the protector but under the sheet.

I do own a dual control electric blanket, but I very rarely use it now, my house is pretty easy to keep warm.

barkingfly · 30/03/2018 07:47

three featherbeds and a three inch memory foam topper

AnoiaUnstickMyDrawers · 30/03/2018 07:52

Nowt. I used a waterproof protector when pregnant in case of waters going, but it was too sweaty and itchy so I ended up with maternity pads with towels over the top. Still not comfy. Was glad to get rid of them after DD was born!

EmpressOfJurisfiction · 30/03/2018 07:55

Mattress protector and my summer duvet.

Marmite27 · 30/03/2018 07:56

A memory foam topper and a waterproof sheet. (33 weeks pregnant and have a toddler in bed with us for at least 10 minutes a day in the morning).
