I need a new Hoover! What's best?

My trusty Dyson is on its way out and since it's my most-used household appliance I want o get the right replacement.

Soooo I am not brand loyal tho I have had two Dysons. I don't f Andy cordless but are you all going to tell me different? Cylinder is an absolute no no.

What's best? I have a lot of poor space (so need a long cord), mix of hard floors (tiles/laminate) and carpets, plus lots of crevices. I Hoover every day downstairs and twice a week upstairs so it gets quite. a bit of use.

Any recommendations or no-nos?

Just got a Shark and it's great. Really light to manoeuvre. Youngest dd loves using it - big bonus. Like having 2 batteries so if you do use one up you can swap and finish the job. Only downside is it doesn't seem to like oldest dd's very long hair and I have to pull it off the roller every now and again

Tobuyornot99 · 03/02/2018 18:17

Cordless Dyson is useless with hair, I spend my life cleaning the brushes of mine, and lasts about 8 minutes on max power. I was initially pleased with it, but wouldn't recommend now unfortunately

clary · 03/02/2018 18:34

Yeah, I don't rate cordless anything, never enough power. That wouldn't do for me hoover-wise!

I measured my Dyson cord and it's 9m, so Shark (8m) should be ok. I have a downstairs socket which I use to do the whole downstairs.

Not mad about emptying it every day tho Hmm

No way I'm getting a cylinder, total bobbins. Will research suggestions, thanks all

(Sorry to hijack —again—) Whywont, which Shark? The cordless duo I’m guessing?

That's my sebo. I'm only mentioning it again because you mention emptying the shark. So the sebo is a bagged cleaner, which I wasn't sure about. However, it's is am amazing cleaner, it sucks up everything and keeps going, I have 4 children and it just picks up whatever they throw at it (literally) and emptying. Well to start with the bags last forever despite how much easier it picks up, I am so amazed that I have only changed the bag once in over a month since we have had it and that was a huge pre Christmas clean including hoovering under the kids beds which we gross, and when you have to empty it's all in a bag with a cover and there is no mess whatsoever!

whywontteenswearcoats · 03/02/2018 21:18

Yes cordless duo. Good for getting under sofas & going between hard floors & carpets. It does need emptied after each use but unlike our old dyson all the gubbins falls out easily into the bin & you don't get filthy trying to tease it out. It doesn't seem to like all the wee black bits that comes off ds football boots if he's been playing on the AstroTurf

TheFairyCaravan · 03/02/2018 21:23

We’ve got a Shark. I don’t hoover because I’m disabled but my DH is in love with it. He’s got 6 out of the 8 blokes in his office to buy one.

PILs let slip that they’d bought a new hoover the other day and he went into his speech about his beloved Shark and how nothing can beat it. TBF they are really good hoovers.

clary · 03/02/2018 22:38

Ooh no gotta be bagless, I'm not going back to buying hoover bags!

I never see the issue with mess when emptying - unclip body from vacuum, take to black bin, hold over bin, press button. All the mess is in the bin and any odd bits of dust are all outside anyway. What's the issue? This is Dyson btw - is it different with other makes? Or do people try to empty them cleanly into the kitchen bin?

My dyson cordless only lasted 3 months outside the 2 year warranty. Lightly used not hammered. Its £80 for a new battery so Im getting a shark instead...

PieceOfTheMoon · 04/02/2018 06:36

Another vote for shark. I got one after seeing them recommended on here. Had it for over a year and it is brilliant.

Undercoverbanana · 04/02/2018 06:45

Miele. I’m not usually convinced by posh brands but this is an exception. My Miele is brilliant. If I vacuum at a friend’s house I find myself so frustrated by the crappy hoovers out there.

acornsandnuts · 04/02/2018 06:55

I love my shark. The headlights show every crumb on the wood floor, nothing is missed.

I empty mine every time I use is, don’t see it as an issue it’s a habit now. I’ve two dogs so it does fill quick.

We Also have a dyson cordless and was embarrassed the first time we used the shark as to how much dust was in the carpets.

mummyhaschangedhername · 04/02/2018 11:12

Maybe it's because I over fill my Dyson (had Dysons for 10 years), but every time it's all condensed and I have to find something to stick in it to force the fluff/hair/dust out, there is dust all in the air, I usually get a load on the floor and think how ironic it is I just emptied the bloody thing to have to hoover its own mess back up. Clearly just me though 😂

Praisebe · 04/02/2018 12:51

But if you don't empty it after each use then all the dirt festers eurgh

bingohandjob · 04/02/2018 14:33

Sebo Felix. Revelation after my Dyson. Would never go bagless again.

Changedmynameo · 04/02/2018 14:35

I love my Henry. Well he’s called “Numatic” because he’s the industrial version, but Henry!

clary · 04/02/2018 20:34

Bingo - why never bagless again?

isn't it a hassle buying bags, expense, not green, plus loss of suction?

What's the bag advantage?

OP posts:
myusernameisnotmyusername · 04/02/2018 22:03

Henry is the best I've ever had. I can get all the way downstairs without unplugging from upstairs. It does carpets and tiles. Cheap and sucks up well-we have a cat so I know! Only annoying thing is it's hefty to drag around but I can put up with that for how good it is.

AthenaAshton · 04/02/2018 22:07

Henry?

Omgineedanamechange · 04/02/2018 22:15

I’ve not RTFT but I’m sure someone will have said get a Shark, and I’ll second that. I’ve had a Dyson for probably 20 years, but when the latest one broke I was recommended a shark, and will never buy a Dyson again.

Omgineedanamechange · 04/02/2018 22:21

Blush ok, now I’ve RTFT, so, yeah, what they all said. Get a shark.

clary · 04/02/2018 22:32

To those who say Henry - it's a cylinder, yes? I have used on on holiday and it was pants, tho I am sure you have nicer models.

Cylinders are the devil's work in my view; I need to push the Hoover around, can't be doing with pulling the cylinder and getting down with the brush. Anyway, basically I'm only happy with an upright. I know I am picky but I use it A LOT 😀

OP posts:
mummyhaschangedhername · 05/02/2018 08:26

The sebo I suggested is a cylinder but it has a power head like an upright. In fact the sebo goes by itself, serious power. Think it's the only power head cylinder.

Someone needs to create a shop where you hire vacuums to try them out.

By the way, dysons have a 5 year warranty so if it's younger than that then call them out. If it's older they can still offer you a discount off another Dyson direct with them.

Amie021 · 05/02/2018 10:51

I have two Sharks; one True Pet upright for the house and a handheld small one which has lots of tiny and I mean tiny attachments but the OH uses the latter more than I do for getting into crevices of the car. I am always amazed how much the Shark picks up and I hoover at least once a day (OCD!). The upright is useless on hard floors.

Agoddessonamountaintop · 05/02/2018 18:14

Took delivery of a Shark Truepet stick cleaner today. It’s pretty darned good. Would have preferred the cordless version really as it’s a pain unplugging (our house has four floors), but you can’t remove the dust cylinder on the cordless one, annoyingly. Much easier than dragging a bloody great cylinder around though, and I’ve always found traditional uprights too heavy as well.
Will now bore off!
