Talk to me about coffee machines

My beloved krups espresso machine has died after 10 years. I went into John Lewis and was a bit overwhelmed by all the choice and no one was there to help. Can anyone recommend me theirs? Are the bean to cup ones worth the money over the ground coffee ones?

Hello, this thread is a little old and some of the recommendations might be out of date. If you’re looking for up-to-date advice on the best coffee machine money can buy, take a look at our round-up of Mumsnetters’ favourites. MNHQ.

I used to grind my own beans then stopped a few months ago and started buying a better grade of coffee already ground and a special container that will keep it fresh. I think building the grinder into the coffee maker is a bit silly and just another thing to break.

If you love your old Krups buy another that gets good ratings on Amazon.

I have a Technivorm I love (it's a high end Dutch machine), but it just makes regular drip coffee, not expresso:

The bean to cups are amazing but just so expensive. I have had the pod machines and filter/jug machines and these days I just have an electric coffee/spice grinder and a cafetiere. Cheaper, less space taken up in the kitchen and just as good freshly brewed coffee.

I have a bean to cup machine - it's one of the few kitchen gadgets I would run out to replace if it died!

Me too!

Ohyesiam · 30/12/2017 17:23

I will talk about coffee machines.
Why would you need one when you can have a grinder and a cafetiere ? That said I'm not looking for expresso.

scarfdemon · 30/12/2017 17:27

Thank you for your replies. There's a delonghi bean to cup reduced from approx £380 to £190 on ao.com I'm seriously considering as late xmas present to myself, just debating it over as December has been such an expensive month. I can't be bothered with the faff of grinding my own beans nowadays (there's a dusty grinder somewhere at the back of the cupboard) but if a machine would do it all for me... Are any of the pod machines worth considering? I've tried a couple at friends and have to admit (not to them obviously) wasn't very impressed

Coffee from the pod machines is bloody awful, too expensive and bad environmentally.

Please don't go there.

metalmum15 · 30/12/2017 17:40

Op is that the Delonghi Magnifica? If so my dh bought that one a few weeks ago when it was half price on Amazon and he reckons it's the best purchase he's ever made! He'd been debating for months because of the price. He hasn't stopped going on about it all Xmas. (I'm a heathen and much prefer instant, but it does froth the milk well for a lovely latte 😊)

MissConductUS · 30/12/2017 17:45

I just looked at the Delonghi and now I want one.🙋

semideponent · 30/12/2017 17:46

Pods are terrible for the environment, so on that basis alone I’d justify that late Xmas present of a bean to cup machine :)

bluesu · 30/12/2017 17:47

I have a Jura bean to cup with milk system, ridiculously expensive but I couldn't be without now!

scarfdemon · 30/12/2017 17:47

@metalmum15 yes, this one ao.com/product/esam2600-delonghi-magnifica-bean-to-cup-coffee-machine-black-51294-65.aspx

Very very tempted!

scarf we’re on our second delonghi bean to cup machine and I would recommend them all day long. I don’t even drink coffee but I bought one for DH many moons ago and he uses it every day - I think it even gets more use than the kettle! We considered not replacing the first one when it died, and lasted about 3 days before finding another. The current one has been going strong for 6 years now and doesn’t show any signs of misbehaving yet - as long as we descale appropriately. Honestly they’re marvellous machines.

metalmum15 · 30/12/2017 17:54

Do it OP! DH says you won't regret it 😆 With the amount of coffee he gets through a day it's also much more economical than buying instant coffee or the pods. (We used to have one of those and the pods were so expensive we stopped buying them). He buys the Lavazza coffee beans online.

scarfdemon · 30/12/2017 18:01

Amazon have it for £150!! That's decided it!!

OP posts:
MissConductUS · 30/12/2017 18:01

That exact model isn't sold in the US but the very similar looking ESAM3300 is $629 on Amazon, so I'd say that's a real bargain.

😁 Enjoy your coffee

derektheladyhamster · 30/12/2017 18:06

I have one and yes it would be replaced somehow if it broke

Acorncat · 30/12/2017 18:17

I bought a similar one (the 2800) and it's great. Haven't bothered with the milk frother but it's great having coffee at the press of a button. I used to use a cafetiere but it would always be too weak or too strong.

MissConductUS · 30/12/2017 18:24

Good shopping scarf. 😸

PetiteMarseillaise · 30/12/2017 20:09

@scarfdemon any chance you can link to the £150 amazon model please? My searching only brings up that model for £189 :-/

scarfdemon · 30/12/2017 20:22

@PetiteMarseillaise arghh! The price has changed, its the esam2800 one, now showing £179, was def £150 earlier! I was going to buy it next week when dc were back in school. Angry

OP posts:
PetiteMarseillaise · 30/12/2017 21:02

@scarfdemon commiserations! I'm still only getting £189 for that model Angry Will keep an eye on it and hope it goes down again?
