Induction or gas? Please help me choose

I've always cooked on gas but I was looking forward to an induction hob as a replacement for our old neff 5 rings gas hob.
But then I went to a Neff demonstration and learnt that I can't use my wok properly on the induction. You have to use a flat bottom wok and move the food, not the wok.
So then I thought I'd get 600mm induction with s big gas burner at the side for the stir frying.
But now I'm not sure whether to just go for a replacement full hob.
If you have induction, having previously cooked on gas, do you love it and if so, why?

Any other thoughts or comments to help me decide very gratefully received.

TIA

I had a glass topped hob for years ...not sure if that counts as induction....

Moved house and inherited a gas hob...

Wouldn't go back...gas is far superior. .

Induction is easier to clean.

For that alone, I would never go back to gas.

Gammeldragz · 03/10/2017 16:41

Gas hob, electric oven. That's the dream... I'd love a gas hob, better temperature control and you use woks!

cannotmakemymindup · 03/10/2017 16:44

Currently have induction hob and I would always choose to have gas if I could!
Gas is superior - when you turn the heat on it is immediate. When you turn it off it isn't still cooking your food like induction does. You have to change the way you cook with induction to remember the heat is still there, even when you have turned it off.

Sgtmajormummy · 03/10/2017 16:44

Induction, for the temperature control and timer functions. I have both and use induction 95% of the time. I have a huge expensive frying pan that's not compatible. Otherwise it would be 99%.

thank you all for the replies.
sgtmajor, do you have the domino set up that Neff are offering?

and aren't new gas hobs much easier to clean than older models?

Always had gas loved it, got induction loved it even more!

We moved into rented and had gas, I was so looking forward to it. Utterly had every time I had to use it!!! Was joyous to be back with induction.

RandomMess · 03/10/2017 16:57

Use hob top kettle on induction it's that fast and cleaning is a dream.

When you run it off although the glass plate stays warm I find it's not enough to keep cooking tbh

runningtogetskinny · 03/10/2017 16:58

I changed from Rangemaster gas to Rangemaster induction, I love it! I don’t like stir fry so never use a wok, gas hob always needed cleaning (especially when older kids start cooking) induction hob I just wipe over with the worktops and it looks great again

birchandrowan · 03/10/2017 17:08

I think some posts here are referring to other types of electric hobs. Induction is every bit as fast and responsive as gas, easier to control and to clean. I don't know about woks, but I would never dream of going back to gas.

bumpertobumper · 03/10/2017 17:17

I love my induction hob, top temperature is much hotter than gas (mains) ever got.
I just stir fry in a large flat frying pan, wok thing a non issue for me.
Very responsive, and adjusts immediately ( pp who says it doesn't must have a ceramic hob- looks the same but SO different).
Just bear in mind that you can't use copper or aluminium pans. When I got my aeg they threw in free set of pans.

cannotmakemymindup · 03/10/2017 18:47

Apologies i was told we had an induction hob when it was installed by our landlord. Hmm
Actual induction sounds amazing!

Ropsleybunny · 03/10/2017 18:49

I've cooked on both and I wouldn't change my Induction hob for anything. I love it ❤️️

cannotmakemymindup · 03/10/2017 18:52

I meant I clearly have Ceramic after googling what the differences are.

RandomMess · 03/10/2017 18:55

Anything electric other than induction is utter rubbish.

wowfudge · 03/10/2017 19:48

Induction without a shadow and just buy a new wok! I would not go back to gas.

lolalotta · 03/10/2017 20:03

A friend told me there might be a link between induction hobs and breast cancer, I didn't do any research as to wether this is thought to be true as we decided to stick with gas.

buckeejit · 03/10/2017 20:15

Our gas hob was taken away 2 months ago-have been using the one ring induction hob from ikea for £35 to test induction & I love it-now can wait for the neff induction to be fitted in new kitchen. Like p&p says so easy to clean so I'm won on that-have made a stir fry in a big pan fine too.

Which induction kettles do people recommend?

runningtogetskinny · 03/10/2017 20:25

Buck I have a copper look John Lewis kettle that works fine with my induction hob, cost around £40 I think

RandomMess · 03/10/2017 20:29

We just have a basic kettle, went shopping with a magnet in Tk Max if memory serves me right!

Doublechocolatetiffin · 03/10/2017 20:43

I'd go for induction too, we have an induction hob and it's so much better than gas. The best thing is that it is just so easy to clean. It's every bit as quick and responsive as gas (maybe quicker for heating water?) but nothing burns to the hob. Ever. Spill water everywhere because it's boiled over, no problem just lift the pan and use a dishcloth to mop it up. In fact on the demo that I went to the chef suggested just putting a dishcloth underneath anyway so you don't make any mess. It's bloody brilliant. It's a year old now and still looks absolutely spotless.

MongerTruffle · 03/10/2017 20:47

I think some people on this thread don't know what the difference is between an induction hob and a normal electric hob. With induction hobs, temperature control is instant.

If you want to do stir frying, you could look at this. Half of it is induction and there are two gas burners on the other side.

elfycat · 03/10/2017 20:49

We were going to go for gas, but decided on the induction model. No regrets at all.

Both DDs and I have long hair and it's less of a fire risk. I can get them to help with cooking at a much earlier age than if there was a naked flame.

I find it just as easy to control as gas. Ours is a rangemaster, and the heat is steady, but on holiday I did find the induction hob had a timing when it would heat, and then a pause. It was OK one I'd got the hang of the balance, but that probably wasn't as good as gas.

RandomUsernameHere · 03/10/2017 20:56

Induction all the way. They are absolutely brilliant, so efficient and easy to clean.
