Join me in getting rid of at least one thing a day decluttering challenge?

I am trying to declutter, starting with our loft and garage both of which need some work doing so need to be a lot emptier! After they're done I want to declutter the rest of the house. I've already got rid of loads of stuff but I'm starting to lose motivation alone!

We have quite strict rules for what we can put in rubbish so I'm selling, free cycling, taking stuff to the clothes bank etc. At least one thing a day. I'm hoping to be done by Christmas!

Anyone want to join me?

Well done everyone, I've managed 2 bin bags for the charity shop and half a bag for the bin just from toy cupboards so happy with that as I haven't had much time recently

TaylorTinker · 05/11/2017 22:09

Thanks for the inspiration everyone.

I've a bag of outgrown children's clothes but we have bought replacements so I can't count it really! Some unused toys have emerged from a look around the youngest's room and they can be dropped off at a charity shop next week.

Paper disposal has only been at maintenance level but that's better than nothing.

I did a tiny chip away at birthday stuff: sorted through candles, napkins etc. I now just need to put the decent bits that are left in a tin to contain it then store it in a high cupboard.

My wardrobe is overflowing with badly organised shoes and bags. I'm going to take a critical look now and see if I can get rid of some bits and see how I might organise the rest a little better.

TaylorTinker · 05/11/2017 22:14

Oh I've been using up hair conditioners and face cream samples from my bathroom declutter. I should look gorgeous anyday now!

Sparrowlegs248 · 05/11/2017 22:18

Total failure this weekend thanks to husband. Still, he's back at work tomorrow......

I did a massive clothes clear our about a year ago. 5 massive bags gone. I still have two large wardrobes and a chest full. Lots doesn't fitake me and lots not worn for ages (been pregnant and/or breastfeeding for 3 yrs.......) but I am too fat so most stuff is too small. I'm sure I could have another ruthless rummage.

Sparrowlegs248 · 06/11/2017 08:07

Got up this morning and got peed of again with how husband rearranged the kitchen (microwave and utensils etc all in the wrong place) and being as I do ALL the cooking I've put it back and got the toaster out to go to the tip. I actually put it in the bin but I'm pretty sure he'll take it out again.

There are some decorative small jugs that he'd hung up that are bloody horrible too . I've half a mind to take the to the charity shop but he'll have a fit if I do.

ArcheryAnnie · 06/11/2017 09:02

Before I started work today I put on time team for half an hour and went through two baskets of tat that had ended up in the kitchen. A small amount of the tat (random unused screws, etc) went in the right place, a few more things in the charity shop bag, the rest in recycling, a small amount in the bin. Very satisfying!

StealthNinjaMum · 06/11/2017 10:02

Nottalotta that sounds really annoying, could you 'drop' a jug on the floor? I'm trying not to be rude or sexist but it doesn't seem very 'manly' to have decorative jugs, did he buy them or mil?

Dh has improved a lot recently and let me give away a hideous pot his mum gave us for xmas about 12 years ago.

I feel I need to set myself targets or jobs like medaymumoffour. I was getting rid of a carrier bag a day really successfully but I have slowed down as much of my jobs now are tidying as well as just chucking things out. I still have lots to get rid of but I am organising myself so it's slower and harder to get motivated with less tangible result.

So this week I will be:

  1. Clearing up so much stuff I can see the floor of the 'room of doom'. This will involve lots of filing and shredding.
  2. Wrapping up xmas presents and going through the wrapping paper box (with a view to getting rid of it).
  3. Sorting out xmas decorations.
  4. Either putting all remaining stuff for sale on Facebook or taking it to a charity shop so that our sitting room is clear.
  5. Taking at least 3 bags to the charity shop
Sparrowlegs248 · 06/11/2017 10:53

Setting targets is a good idea. I'll do that when I get home . I really need to go through the baby clothes. It's difficult to know what to do with them though, many charity shops here don't take them . Can't sell them on Facebook (I've tried, what a waste of time! ) some of them are quite well u used but clean and plenty of use left. Might post in chat about that actually.

stealth it drives me bonkers. I've left the jugs for now . He buys tat from charity shops and fills the house with it. Not bought anything for a while tbf but there's lots of it. Clutter . He's also a noisy bastard so I have to go slow with this stuff. The rearrangement and toaster going to the tip are probably enough for one day!

Sparrowlegs248 · 06/11/2017 10:53

Moody not noisy!

SandSnakeofDorne · 06/11/2017 15:03

That doesn't sound fun notta.

I've taken a bag of clothes to donate today. Tomorrow my aim is to take a bag to the textile bank.

An update before I pick dds up.

A really good day. I have also made about 8 bags to go to charity shops but none are full. They've got shoes, toys, books, rags etc and so I'll be taking them to the charity shops even if they're not full. I keep waiting for bags to fill then dds find and empty them!

I also had a big clearout of books. We have lots of sets which I thought I'd sell on Facebook as those sort of things are always popular. Every bloody set is missing a book! So annoying

TheGrumpySquirrel · 06/11/2017 15:11

Wow @Nottalotta that is a lot of clothes still! I only have 1 hanging rail (double width, admittedly) and 6 small drawers. Doesn’t include shoe space or handbags...

Freshprincess · 06/11/2017 15:54

I'm back and somewhat shamefaced. I've not only fallen off the wagon, I think it's run me over. I had a box of books to go to the charity shop in the car and I brought it back into the house Blush. My poor excuse is that I had a crappy week with exH and it has set me back.

Anyway, D.C.'s are out tonight so I'm getting back on it. Love the idea of keeping a list of stuff I've thrown out. I've so much crap it seems like I'm making no progress.

Medwaymumoffour · 07/11/2017 08:57

I’m slowing down too but I still have to hit my 200 target this month. I need to think again of quick win areas which is getting harder as I have done most quick wins last month.

Four out today, two charity bags at the weekend. I will get there

TaylorTinker · 07/11/2017 09:15

Medway:
Do you have anything left over from old hobbies or schooldays? During my last big declutter when moving I realised a lot of books had served their purpose. And some hobbies were part of an old life not my current one. It was easy to get declutter some big chunks ONCE I'd retrieved them from their deep cupboards.

TaylorTinker · 07/11/2017 09:16

I'm still trying to pick round the edges and I'm also running out of easier bits!

SandSnakeofDorne · 07/11/2017 09:35

I've cleared out a very small shelf in the kitchen! Got rid of about half of what was on it. It's not much, but it's progress.

All my uni things went years ago. Only a few cherished text books left. I do have a coffee table of doom. Things thrown in years ago, never to be looked at again. Maybe it’s time to look in there. Then maybe the toy box. I do the toys regularly but I’m sure the charity pile makes it’s way back in there!

Sparrowlegs248 · 07/11/2017 12:06

Taking the riddles to pre school in a minute then will come back and plan the rest of my weeks efforts. Nothing today so far.

Sparrowlegs248 · 07/11/2017 12:08

Toddler. ......

StealthNinjaMum · 07/11/2017 13:28

The week is going slowly. The problem with my target to empty the 'room of doom' is that it requires moving things around as well as throwing things away. So I am giving some board games away in order to find space for the empty playstation and wii boxes that are now going where the board games were. Is it the butterfly effect? I feel I am fluttering around moving things from one room to another and nothing ever looks tidier. Yet I am clearly getting rid of stuff.

Today I chucked out loads of old cardboard packaging and papers. I gave two bags of toys to the PTA for the school fair. Today I am intending to put a bag of books and bag of boardgames in the car to go to the charity shop on Thursday. I have also been hunting the house for pieces of a tricycle that takes up lots of space. It's one of those that starts as a tall push along for toddlersand you keep removing bits until its just a tricycle. Anyway it has been bothering me for ages as I keep stepping on bits. Well now I am trying to reassemble it I can't find them!

Sparrowlegs248 · 07/11/2017 14:45

Still nothing here really. Had an unexpected visitor so although I HAVE tidied a bit, nothings been got rid of. I have put a few bits of clothes away that dc1 has outgrown and I've found a charity shop that will take baby stuff so progress in a small way. Jut feeding the baby, have to leave in 25 minutes to collect ds so will cast around for something, preferably 3 things to make up for nothing at the weekend.

SandSnakeofDorne · 07/11/2017 15:55

I know what you mean about the butterfly effect stealth, I seem to get rid of loads but move stuff around and nothing looks emptier. That shelf is now full again with things moved out of baby reach from the kitchen island!

I took a bin bag of stuff to textile recycling this afternoon and I've half-filled a bag of outgrown baby clothes. At least the hall looks a tiny bit tidier now I've taken the bin bag to recycling!

Listed two change bags to sell (I love bags) so had to empty them into another two change bags ( the shame) that’s tonight jobs. Five change bags all full of stuff needing condensing into one ‘out all day with a billion kids bag’ and one ‘I’m quite normal and just have one toddler in tow today bag’
Butterfly sounds better than churning. That’s when you just tidy move and reorganise but nothing leaves

Sparrowlegs248 · 07/11/2017 19:01

My husband fills the spaces. Spreads stuff out.
