Anyone know of a good unscented laundry detergent?

I don't like wearing clothes smelling of any kind of laundry detergent as it gives me a headache. Can anyone recommend a laundry liquid that doesn't leave clothes smelling at all? I do prefer biological but may have to change to non bio if I can't find anything unscented.

I used to use Ariel acti-lift but they changed the formula and packaging and it started leaving fragrance on the clothes regardless of whether they'd been tumbled or hung to dry. So I changed to ecover bio laundry liquid which just had a trace of limonene which I could deal with and this was fine. Unfortunately they just changed the packaging and formula of this product as well and now it smells of jasmine and honeysuckle and it's made my kitchen stink of it. Why do they think I want my clothes smelling of random crap like this? I want them just to be clothes and I'd just like to smell like a person, not a perfume factory!

Any help appreciated!

Just to add that I use a fraction of the recommended dose - can't imagine how strong the smell would be if I used the full amount!

Ecover Non-Bio has been the same for many years (luckily - it's not the smell that bothers me, it's the allergic reactions). If they've changed that too, I'm in for an ...interesting time.

Double rinsing works well for me if, for example, I am abroad and have to use an unchecked detergent. Basically do a full wash (nice long one, with lots of soaking time and the fastest possible spin - Eco washes are good, sometimes supplemented by an additional high speed spin) then follow that straight away with a rinse cycle. Seems to get rid of most of the residues.

I thought the thing with laundry balls is that your washing machine contains enough detergent residues for them to 'work' for quite a few washes on what appears to be no detergent, then basically stop working (except in a 'sloshing stuff around in water with a small object to batter them will achieve some cleaning' way) after that.

So they are fine for 'washing' not dirty things, but don't clean e.g. muddy rugby kit after 10 washes or so.

A friend uses an unscented one from Boots of all places.

I use Method concentrate which is low scent (I hate laundry product scents). But it is being discontinued and replaced with less concentrated highly scented Ones. Shame that.

Not used it myself but I have heard good things about Surcare

Ah Frog that is the other one my fragrance sensitive friend uses.

LapinR0se · 28/08/2017 13:18

It's hard as the base active ingredients in detergent really don't smell nice at all. So you need some kind of fragrance to mask them.
Ariel has one of the highest fragrance levels in the market so I'm not surprised you find it difficult to tolerate. You might be better with one of the hypoallergenic ones like persil non-bio or fairy original. Can try Ecover too but it won't offer very good cleaning power.

Thanks everyone. Will give some of the suggestions a try.

Ecos do a fragrance free version, I've used the lavender one and it's very good.

There has just been a new laundry detergent range launched in the UK, it is scent free and Biological too.

It is called Neutral - not in supermarkets yet, but can get it online through NEUTRAL directly or through AMAZON.

Other than that, Seventh Generation "Free and Clear" is also now available in the UK (again scent free and biological), but is only available in Tesco.

We moved to Soap Nuts when we moved abroad and non bio was prohibitively expensive, and I had to bring it over from the UK (think £10 for the tiny boxes)

I use Surcare mentioned up thread for my DS, he is prone to eczema. It works well.

Treeballarae · 28/08/2017 16:49

Ecover do a fragrance free version called Ecover Zero

StepAwayFromCake · 28/08/2017 17:17

Surcare is fragrance-free. The powder, I find, is fine for whites, but I think fades bright colours a bit. So I use the liquid for colourful and more delicate things. Like most liquids, it's fine for general cleaning, but not as good for stains.

Waitrose own-brand version is also good. I generally buy whichever Iain offer.

Waitrose own-brand version of Oxy-clean stain-removing powder is biological. If it has fragrance it's very mild, and, at only a scoop per occasional wash, doesn't affect me.

FrogFairy · 28/08/2017 18:46

Something I just remembered.
Back in the days when I used cloth nappies, I dabbled with making home made laundry gloop using grated soap, soda crystals no water. I only used it for nappies but some folk used it for all their laundry.

You could make this using fragrance free soap and it need not cost much to make a small batch to try.

FrogFairy · 28/08/2017 18:46

Sorry -and water, not no water.

Soap nuts!

Passthecake30 · 17/06/2018 21:57

I use a small amount of surcare, no strong smell as I can't stand that... and fine for dds excema.

purplegreen99 · 19/06/2018 09:47

I've been using Ecover Zero for ages as I hate any synthetic perfumes. I find it great - unscented, cleans well and is fine for ds's eczema too.

purplegreen99 · 19/06/2018 09:48

Forgot to say it's the Ecover Zero powder I use - haven't tried the liquid.
