Tea-stained mugs

How do you remove tea stains from your mugs? I've been using bleach but when I mentioned this to my partner he freaked out. Obviously I wash them thoroughly afterwards. Is there a better way?

Astonish paste with a scouring pad.

Monkeypuzzle32 · 30/07/2017 17:31

Salt gets rid of the stains too

Blondielongie · 30/07/2017 17:33

Bleach. And a good clean after.

SheRaaarghPrincessOfPower · 30/07/2017 17:33

Bio washing powder dissolved in the mug will get rid of it. Stick the stained teaspoons in at the same time

Birgitz · 30/07/2017 17:34

Denture cleaning tablets remove the stains easily

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 30/07/2017 17:34

Bit of Cif will do it.

withouttea · 30/07/2017 17:35

Diluted Milton fluid does the job. I think it's some kind of bleach but as it's designed for sterilising baby's bottles, it's obviously ok for cups too.

Vonklump · 30/07/2017 17:35

Denture cleaning tablets or Milton tablets.

PerspicaciaTick · 30/07/2017 17:35

Denture tablets are miraculous.

Timefortea99 · 30/07/2017 17:36

Bleach - and then a good wash. If partner does not like it ask him to get scrubbing.

TartanDMs · 30/07/2017 17:36

Yep steradent. Dissolve one in a mug full of boiling water and the stains just disappear.

WotsitWig · 30/07/2017 17:38

I always use bleach. Drop of bleach in the bottom of the cup, top up with hot water, leave for a bit, rinse out and plonk in the dishwasher for a good wash.

ImTakingTheEssence · 30/07/2017 17:40

Milton

YellowLawn · 30/07/2017 17:41

a pan scoured and hot soapy water.
or some descaler spray, brush and rinse.
but usually the dishwasher does a good job of it.

when they don't come out clean out of the dishwasher it's time to re-fill the salt

FrJohnnyHellzapoppin · 30/07/2017 17:46

Bicarbonate of soda and boiling water, leave overnight, stains will lift off, any stubborn stains will scrub off easily.

Nanasueathome · 30/07/2017 17:49

Was coming in to say Milton..but can see it's already been mentioned above
A dishwasher would get rid too

Hidingtonothing · 30/07/2017 17:53

Another vote for bio washing powder (I find Persil best), all my mugs are white so I chuck the lot in the washing up bowl with a good scoop of powder and really hot water. Leave to soak for half hour or so then wash thoroughly, gets them sparkly white Smile

Purplemac · 30/07/2017 21:56

I've always used bleach and hot water, then into the dishwasher after they've soaked. Worked in a coffee shop for 2 years and they did the same there...

SeaSeeker · 30/07/2017 22:07

Thanks all! Will inform OH that my bleaching habit has been confirmed as acceptable and will also try the steradent and the washing powder suggestions

I've always used bleach and then dishwasher. We are in our 60s now so it hasn't got us yet!

silkpyjamasallday · 31/07/2017 07:26

I often put vanish washing powder in them with warm water and leave to soak for a bit, then wash them normally with fairy very thoroughly afterwards.

BasedOnTrueEvents · 31/07/2017 07:28

Bicarbonate of soda is very effective and non-toxic. I'd be wary of using bleach on a mug. Too much scope for accidents.

PuffinsSitOnMuffins · 31/07/2017 07:43

Just cleaning with a non-stick sponge scourer gets most of them. Magic eraser for the rest! Very satisfying.

SleepFreeZone · 31/07/2017 07:59

Bleach and dishwasher here too.
