Housework I don't know I should be doing

The recent thread on hoovering your mattress got me thinking. What other housework tasks do I not know I need to do?

I'm not a complete slattern. I tidy, dust, Hoover, clean the kitchen & bathroom, change beds etc at least weekly. Obviously windows, paintwork etc get done, just less frequently But what might I not know to do, and how often should I be doing it?

Washing curtains, dusting lampshades and cleaning toilet bowls using hands and cloths are popular round MN way.

Don't mention toilet brushes or washing up bowls.

i do hoover mattress but have horrific eczema and take strong drugs though

FlowerFairyLights · 20/07/2017 21:07

I so need to wash skirting and doors. I havent....

AfunaMbatata · 20/07/2017 21:09

Do you already take the drawer out of the washing machine and clean the place where it goes?

ItsNiceItsDifferentItsUnusual · 20/07/2017 21:10

Most of my light shades are glass and it drives me wild how dusty they are. Really seriously don't have the time to be chewing on with them at the moment though.

Didn't know about hoovering the mattress...

C0untDucku1a · 20/07/2017 21:13

I read the title and knew this would be about the mattress thread Grin

GeneandFred · 23/07/2017 02:50

The bits at the bottom of your radiator... They collect dust.

Washing machine drawer.

Your mesh covering on your extractor hood should just pop out. Not a lot of people know about this, they can go in the dishwasher.

Most people forget to wipe down door handles. I use diluted zorflora with a microfibre cloth.

Skirting underneath radiator gets dirty.

Light fittings. Lamps.

Towel rails in bathrooms.

Bath panel.

Bitchfromhell · 23/07/2017 02:59

Tops of doorframes, mirrors and pictures need a good clean quite often. Also behind pictures (spiders).

Get an old wet tea towel and wave about behind radiators whilst you're at it too. And hoover the tops of your kitchen cupboards and tops of the books on shelves for a good smug clean feel.

I love housework me Smile

Eleventybillionfucks · 23/07/2017 03:04

In-between and behind radiators
The Washing machine drawer and the bit inside where all the the black mould gathers where you can't see it
The washing machine itself
Dusting above doorframes and vacuuming the air vents (prevents dust falling down)
The dog's dishes daily
The skirting boards
Behind furniture
The toilet cistern
Shower heads
Those are a few places i clean that others might not but i can't think of any others and im a total clean freak

starfishmummy · 23/07/2017 22:32

I once visited an acquaintance in her new smaller house. She said it was much easier to clean than her previous big old house and went on..."you know when you go round the window frames with a toothbrush"

I just nodded

birdsdestiny · 23/07/2017 22:37

I took my washing machine drawer out after reading about it on here, took me over an hour to get the arsing thing back in. Won't be following that handy tip again.

YoureNotASausage · 23/07/2017 22:44

I think we need a thread on cleaning things you can get away with NOT doing and for how long.

Hoovering mattress - 10 yrs
Disinfecting door handles - 45 yrs
Etc.

AfunaMbatata · 23/07/2017 23:30

Cleaning the oven -Just buy a new one like my mother does! (She's literally has never cleaned an oven in her life, she just buys new ones Confused)

Justgivemesomepeace · 23/07/2017 23:39

Apparently we are to have 2 mops now- one for the kitchen and one for the bathroom, according to a new thread tonight. My housekeeping standards are quite laidback. I'm not sure where id keep 2 mops in my 2 up 2 down terrace with 1 under stairs cupboard of doom for storage.

DancingLedge · 23/07/2017 23:50

Why ? Why? Why?
Why would you ask other MNetters to point out things which really haven't bothered you in any way? Which you might now become conscious of, and feel a need to start doing?

mortificado · 23/07/2017 23:56

For the washing machine drawer is that the part where you put the liquid/powder?

If it is, never doing that again. Couldn't get the fucking thing back in. Managed to crack it by forcing it so ended up buying a new sodding machine. Was easier than trying to figure out which model of hotpoint I had because according to those bastards not all the drawers are the same. Hmm

elephantoverthehill · 24/07/2017 00:01

Do you move every single piece of furniture every week to dust behind or hoover under? If not woe betide Smile

elephantoverthehill · 24/07/2017 00:04

AfunaMbatata You are not one of my Dcs.

PickAChew · 24/07/2017 00:04

Cutlery drawer.

It ends up bogging if you ignore it.

PickAChew · 24/07/2017 00:06

Sod having any mops at all for the floor, though. Germ nurseries.

IDidThinkAboutIt · 24/07/2017 01:30

Light switches and light pulls. Disinfect those grottoes of germs.

Same for your car/house keys - why wash hands then grab filthy bundle of keys and head out for the day?

Ditto purse straps and handles. Wet wipes were made for this and they turn grey when you do it. Ew.

But my mom used to say dirt stops you getting sick so YMMV!

Ollivander84 · 24/07/2017 01:34

Laughing at buying another oven Grin
I like to support the local businesses be lazy and pay someone to clean the oven. Also had my carpets cleaned

Eleventybillionfucks · 24/07/2017 05:51

I read online the other day you can put your keys in the dishwasher to clean them Hmm they also suggested sticking toilet seats and wellies in there too boak

rabbit123 · 24/07/2017 08:23

Soak the toilet brush in diluted denture cleaning tablets. Honestly, it looks like a new loo brush afterwards!!

Eleventybillionfucks · 24/07/2017 08:48

Id rather spend 70p on a new loo brush than money on denture tabletsHmm

rabbit123 · 24/07/2017 10:28

I'd rather spend £1 on a packet of own brand denture tablets (or sterilising fluid from the pound shop also works) than throw away unrecyclable plastic to landfill that takes over 500 years to break down.
