Take off the bannister first. Look how they are attached on the top, will probably be same on bottom, either a pluggy bit of just glue.

BigCremeEggs · 23/03/2007 16:11

i've seen an infommerical on the shopping channels for a paint remover that is harmless, they strip the paint of a lions cage whilst its there, the stuff isn't expensive and looks to do the job - have never used it don't actullay know!

just wish i could remember its name!!

katzg · 23/03/2007 16:17

ready strip its called ready strip, its an eco paint remover its just come back to me!

katzg · 23/03/2007 16:19

BigCremeEggs · 23/03/2007 16:19

again i have no idea if its any good, and i fell for this lateral thigh trainer adverts!

fishie · 23/03/2007 16:30

i've used that stuff - homestrip mine was called. it is absolutely fabbo from the safety pov, but it only takes off one layer at a time, although banisters etc aren't usually that thickly painted. don't use caustic paint stripper it is awful stuff and you can't fence off the stairs if it goes wrong.

and don't use a heat gun if you think there might be lead paint (how old is house?) although it is probably the quickest way.

alipiggie · 23/03/2007 16:44

You want them natural wood then?? Or are you going to paint them again. If you want them natural - I go along with everyone else and get them dipped, or buy very heavy duty gloves and proper stripper otherwise you'll be there for ages.

If you just want to repaint them , sugar soap them to clean the grease off and then prime and re-paint. Good luck. I've repainted bannisters and boy it takes forever but was well worth it.

BigCremeEggs · 23/03/2007 16:45

it was built in 1900.....

it is easy atm stripping but the panel bit on sideof the stairs got about tons of layers of paints!!! ..

Had a friend who stripped all her doors
professionally
don't think it was all that expensive.

Have you finished yet?

BigCremeEggs · 24/03/2007 09:05

no not finished as i had to stop cos DD woke up and i had to get her ready to stay at my mums as me and Dp went out to a party last nite..

ill pop down to B&Q today and ask how much it is and to see how much for the bare new ones and see which was best to get (money saving wise) x
