It seems i'm missing out! Are they worth getting?

We got a dishwasher about 6 months ago and I don't think I could go back to living without. Every time I take a super clean big casserole dish out I mutter how thankful I am for the dishwasher and not having to scrub!
I'm not bothered living without a tumble dryer, though if we ever extend the house and add a utility room I'll probably leave space for one.

I see all the dishwasher dislike is largely coming from people who have never had one. Interesting.
Modern dishwashers use less water, less electric, no gas at all and save time when compared with washing by hand. They're also more hygienic and give better results. I don't understand what's not to like about that.

I think tumble dryers are a massive waste of electricity, but the dishwasher saved my life. When we had DD, I just didn't have time for dishes and they'd build up and build up til it became a job of a couple of hours to clear them. Moved house, bought a new kitchen with dishwasher, OMG ShockBeing able to chuck the dishes in of an evening, run it overnight and wake up to clean dishes has changed our lives. I couldn't be without it now.

I was the same. Before we had one, I would have said I don't see the point, seems like extra faff, unnecessarily lazy etc. Would hate to be without it now!

rabbit - I dislike them because they never worked for me. No matter how much I cleaned my first one (brand new) or how I stacked things, most things needed washing again. I tried all kinds of detergent, salts, you name it, I tried it, but still everything came out covered in thin layer of 'stuff'. I was always having to do washes again, often by hand. When we moved we inherited an old one and that was even worse.

I can only assume that they work well when the only thing you put in is glasses, cups and cutlery and even then they have to be rinsed first - which seems to defeat the object. So when we put our new kitchen in we used the space for another fridge

talkingtoclarry · 05/05/2017 10:42

We have both. I love the dishwasher, it's nice to clear all the surfaces and shove the dirty crockery away. I handwash Tupperware and the like though, including glasses. A couple of glasses started to get those scratches so prefer to wash them myself.
I rarely use the tumble dryer, mainly in winter for bedding. Everything else goes out on the line, weather permitting (already got my second load drying outside - this makes me ridiculously happy) or on the maiden.

floatingfrog · 05/05/2017 10:49

I don't see the point of a dishwasher. You rinse everything before loading, it doesn't get everything clean, you have to wait for a full load and then you have to unload everything. Just bloomin wash-up! I also lime looking at the garden whilst at the sink.Smile

I do have a tumble drier but it is useless. It takes about 4 hours to dry everything.

floatingfrog · 05/05/2017 10:51

Like, dryer.

Oblomov17 · 05/05/2017 10:59

I don't have either. All my friends are Aghast at this. I so wish I had a dishwasher.

rabbit123 · 05/05/2017 16:08

floatingfrog you don't have to rinse everything before it goes in. Just scrape off food into the bin and put it straight in the DW. There's 4 of us at home and the dishwasher goes on daily. Cleans every time, I've never had anything not clean

Me too. Had never used one, my parents didn't have one etc. H really liked them but moot point as we couldn't fit one in however we tried. Went on holiday to a villa which had one, a couple of years running, and I was utterly converted. We moved house last year and have a bigger kitchen here and had one within 2 weeks! I wouldn't be without it now especialy as we are doing up the house. We can get kids to bed, eat, shove it all in and crack on with the work.

DelurkingAJ · 05/05/2017 16:58

Doesn't this mainly come down to the numbers in your home and the hours you work? Here, two FT (leave by 8, home at 6:30 on a good day) and 2 preschoolers makes a tumble drier essential. I'd love to hang the laundry out but at this time of year that'd be one load a week that would dry outside and inside is a nightmare as the toddler likes to pull the whole thing into his head. Pre DC we didn't have or need one.

SecretNetter · 05/05/2017 18:31

Delurking - we have 2dc, both work ft and similar hours. I rarely use our tumble though and it's definitely not an essential for us.

We wash, we peg out if/when we can. If not, wet bottoms/underwear goes over a drying rack and left for a couple of days. Wet tops get hung on hangers and hung over the doorways upstairs then put away after a day or so when dry (we don't iron anyway, we iron as needed...so in a way this is easier than pegging out because they're already on a hanger and ready to shove in the cupboard).

I suppose it depends whether washing hanging inside bothers you, which it doesn't for us.

Foureyesarebetterthantwo · 05/05/2017 18:36

No, modern dishwashers don't require rinsing the dishes before use at all, in fact it says on the instructions not to do that.

Incredibly easy to use, much cleaner dishes. I love mine.

Also love the tumbledrier, it's my 'luxury' as we have a washing mountain in this house and it's a great solution.

I think if you have a small household perhaps these things aren't needed and clearly we did all manage before, but I wouldn't want to- I don't think I'd move anywhere now that couldn't fit in a dishwasher at the very least.

purplegreen99 · 05/05/2017 20:56

I've never had a tumble drier, but I love my dishwasher. I have a microwave but only use it to re-heat mugs of tea.
