It seems i'm missing out! Are they worth getting?

I have a dishwasher which I use daily if not twice daily and a tumble dryer that I use every other day for towels, bed linen etc.

Bluntness100 · 04/05/2017 14:40

I can't imagine not having a dishwasher or a micro wave but we don't have a tumble dryer when we did have one we never used it so replaced washer dryer with washer only. The spare room has clothes horses in it and we hang laundry there to dry and it generally dries over night and is fine by morning,

I'm not sure how much time a dishwasher saves to be honest, but it keeps the kitchen tidy as a previous poster said and it's so much easier to just load it after dinner and walk away than it is to stand there and wash and dry a load of dinner dishes and pots. I'd say it pays for itself in effort saved, as in it just makes lives a bit easier, less work really.

RedStripeIassie · 04/05/2017 14:45

I don't have either YET. I Started a thread about tumble driers in housekeeping a little while back and found they are loved on mn!

I'm going to get one on credit for the winter. They're not cheap but I'm sold. No room for a dishwasher.

BeMorePanda · 04/05/2017 14:45

I don't have a dishwasher, tumble dryer or microwave.

When we eventually move I wold love a dishwasher, but I can't imagine I'll ever want/need/use a dryer or microwave.

I stayed at my sisters recently and used her dryer a couple of times - it seems to fuck your clothes up pretty quickly. Though I do like fluffy towels, I can easily live without them.

rabbit123 · 04/05/2017 16:57

I think it's a case of "you don't miss what you never had". I've never not had a tumble dryer. Even in student housing we always had a dryer. I was born in 82 and my parents always had one. We got a dishwasher in 88 when we moved and I've had one ever since. Wouldn't be without either, though I only tumble dry big stuff like towels and bed sheets.
I've got a microwave but don't use it much.

I don't have a dishwasher in my current flat and I miss it so much! I've told DH we are not living anywhere without one ever again. I use my tumble at least 3/4 times a week, we have no where to hang out washing and I hate having clothes hanging everywhere.

NinaMarieP · 04/05/2017 17:27

Don't have a dishwasher (no room), don't have a tumble dryer (again lack of space) and only just bought a microwave the other week after moving in to the flat nearly 2 years ago... it was reduced to £20 and I figured it might be handy for sterilising things once I've had the baby (or reheating meals for me...)

We inherited a small old tumble dryer when we bought the flat... but you had to stretch the cable from the cupboard across the kitchen door to a plug to use it... and keep it in the middle of the cupboard thus wasting loads of space. We never used it except to test if it actually worked (it did). We took it to the dump after a while and used the space for our recycling boxes instead.

I may regret it when I'm washing loads of baby things...

IrianOfW · 04/05/2017 17:32

Nope. We have neither. Used to have both but I didn't find the dishwasher all that helpful and the tumble drier was by and large unneccessary

Curlyshabtree · 04/05/2017 17:34

No dishwasher(zero space) but we do have a dryer. It's only used in winter to "finish off" washing after being dried on airer. Also use it to dry sheets as we've no space to dry without during the winter. Love a good line dry during clement weather!
When I move to a bigger place I will get a dishwasher but would happily forgo the tumble dryer.

BagelGoesWalking · 04/05/2017 17:54

A dishwasher is a must for me! I couldn't stand washing up every day. I still soak things like baking trays and big casseroles (and then chuck in dishwasher) but I would hate to do all the tiny, annoying things like cutlery.
Also, my DH is crap at washing up. Never seems to use enough soap or hot water so I usually have to redo anything he's done. I would rather go without a washing machine than dishwasher.

When we did some work on the house, we replaced the bath with a shower so we could have the washing machine upstairs in the bathroom (as most European countries seem to do).

We've never had a tumble dryer. In the past, in the winter, we used to wash all the stuff at home, put in a giant sports bag and dry at the launderette. Underwear and socks would go on the radiators. School shirts etc on hangers. Now, I have 2 airers in my son's room (he lives away from home now) so I put clothes there and hang bigger things out if the weather's good.

LynetteScavo · 04/05/2017 18:06

I love, love, love my white goods. When looking at a new house my main priority is that they will all fit in.

NennyNooNoo · 04/05/2017 18:09

Family of 6. We have both, but only use the tumble dryer about 10 times per year, to dry towels and bedding over the winter. From March to October I hang most of the washing outside. The rest of the year or when it's raining, I hang it on a wooden pulleymaid system in a south facing conservatory. Even in winter, I can usually dry it out there in 2 days ( East Anglia). In winter, socks and pants might end up on radiators for a few hours but that's all. Our tumble dryer has been condemned since February as it was one of the Hotpoint ones at risk of catching fire and I haven't missed it at all in that time.

I'm also not convinced about a PP's claim that modern TDs use very little electricity. I believe the heat pump ones are very efficient but these are more expensive to buy so most people don't have these. From figures I got off the Internet, a tumble dryer cycle uses about 2.5 kW/h. Multiply by how many washloads you do per week and then by your electricity price per KW/h and most people will be spending £5-10 per week on drying only. Might not sound much to some, but if you can do it for free, then I begrudge paying that.

The dishwasher uses just over 1kw/h per cycle. I only ever run it on full load which is every day. Well worth it in my opinion to keep the kitchen clear of dirty crockery.

UppityHumpty · 04/05/2017 18:11

I have a dishwasher no tumble dryer (no space and dh thinks having a washer dryer is a fire risk). I manage. The trick is to get a large load washing machine and then bung it all in late at night depending on the weather forecast for the following morning.

lorelairoryemily · 04/05/2017 18:19

I don't have a dishwasher and don't want one, but I love my tumble dryer!!

thisiswhatdreamsaremadeof · 04/05/2017 18:22

8 of us in the household without a dishwasher, we survive 😋 however I couldn't live without my tumble dryer

Mrsknackered · 04/05/2017 18:30

I would love a dishwasher but my miniscule kitchen just doesn't have any space left, my tumble dryer is in our basement. I bought it whilst pregnant with DS2 it's a life saver, I do 1-2 washes daily and could not dry that amount without it!

BagelGoesWalking · 05/05/2017 00:50

Of course, one can survive without a dishwasher. But I don't want to survive, I want to be doing other things - or nothing - while the dishwasher does its work! I'm also pretty sure that a full dishwasher uses less water than you would use doing a manual wash up.

SecretNetter · 05/05/2017 00:55

Could easily live without a tumbler...ours is built into the washing machine but only gets infrequently used for sheets when they can't be hung out because of the weather and i don't want to look at them draped around inside (most of the time they don't bother me draped around!)

I would hate to be without a dishwasher though. We never made an effort to get one and kind of fell into ownership of one by chance about 5 years ago. It's bloody amazing though. I would seriously struggle ATM without it as I'm nearly 39w pg and can't wash anything at the sink for longer than 3 minutes without horrendous back ache.

gluteustothemaximus · 05/05/2017 01:01

Getting a dishwasher changed our lives. We can clean the kitchen so quickly now, pop it in the magic cupboard and do something else!

I can regularly be heard in the kitchen telling the dishwasher I love it 😍

Best purchase ever. DH took out an existing cupboard and fitted the slimline dishwasher as we didn't really have the room. Looks fab.

We have a washer dryer as no room for separates. Again, wouldn't want to live without for towels, bed sheets, baby/toddler clothes.

Don't have a microwave though. Won't ever need or want one either.

Nessie71 · 05/05/2017 05:16

Hopefully we are getting a new kitchen soon so a dishwasher looks like a good idea.

OP posts:
TheMasterNotMargarita · 05/05/2017 05:18

Never had either.

woodstack · 05/05/2017 06:02

I can unload our dishwasher in 4 minutes. I timed how long in total it took to wash up per day (saddo) - about 40 mins. So a dishwasher saves us about 4 hrs per week. I have no idea why people say having one saves no time.

TroysMammy · 05/05/2017 06:17

I've never had a tumble drier and my dishwasher stopped working properly 8 months ago and I don't miss them. When (if) I get a new kitchen I won't be replacing the dishwasher. It's a waste of cupboard space.

Iwantacampervan · 05/05/2017 07:44

I've never had a dishwasher or a tumbe drier but do own a microwave. If I had to choose an appliance I would get a tumble drier as in winter clothes get dried on radiators and I'd like fluffy towels again. I've no room in the kitchen but may be able to get one in the garage.
