How do you sort your washing?

Just wondering...I think I probably do more loads than necessary instead of lumping together.

I always separate the following:
Jeans
Towels
Bed linen
DH's shirts
Dark colours
Light colours
Woollens
Delicates

I've always done it this way, but my sister says she just does dark or light colour washes. Who is right? Do I need to get a life?

Dark
Light
White
Red
A very rare "hand wash" (for wool or fancy pants)

All regular underwear basically falls into one of the first 4 categories so no separate wash

We wash everything at 30 or colder, but if we have loads of towels we crank to 60.

Interesting to see how everyone does it a little differently yes, sad I know

Interesting to see how everyone does it a little differently

It depends on types of clothes and amounts, I suppose.

If I have loads, I separate whites from blacks/dark blues, reds/pinks/oranges and creams/browns.
If not, I separate whites from colours and wash colours at only 30oC.

I tend to put together a wash of delicates/wools, but I may mix other somewhat delicate, but not usually wash as delicates, to make up the load.

It's bras that I always handwash. They are not cheap.

Katsite · 15/12/2016 12:37

I love that I am not the only one who separates reds&pinks&oranges&yellows from the rest of the coloured wash!

MIL does socks separately.

Katsite · 15/12/2016 12:39

MIL also washes FILs suits on delicate. Anyone else out there?

ThreeHens · 15/12/2016 13:32

Dark
Mid colour mixed which don't run
White
Very bright (orange/red etc)
Delicate/wool/silk etc (again all by colour)

FourKidsNotCrazyYet · 15/12/2016 13:37

I generally separate lights and darks through the week wash. I do a white school uniform wash on a Friday at 60•C and a dark one (40•C). Towels and bedding get their own separate wash and at 60•C occasionally 90•C to flush the machine through. I have to admit I rarely was at lower than 40. Breeds too many germs Confused

daftbesom · 15/12/2016 13:43

whites (60)
towels (60)
woollens/delicates (30)
anything else (30) - though I tend not to put v light things in with very dark things, it just depends

Lemon12345 · 15/12/2016 14:54

I'm very prone to thrush and was recommended by the doctor to wash anything below the waist on at least 60, so I've started washing trousers, underwear, towels and bedding on a 60 (sometimes higher). Tops, socks and bras go in on a 30 or 40.
We don't have much in the way of whites other than towels, and I don't have the space to save up so much washing for so many separate loads.

Judydreamsofhorses · 15/12/2016 15:58

Towels once a week
Bed linen once a week
Everything else goes together, usually two loads - just me and DP, no kids

queenofthebucket · 15/12/2016 18:52

Coloured Towels and bedding 60
whites
delicates -
wool/hand

DrDreReturns · 15/12/2016 22:09

Wow - we just do darks and whites and towels separately!

Wolpertinger · 16/12/2016 09:58

Finally I understand why some Mumsnetters do so much washing!

I do whites, handwash and everything else.

NicknameUsed · 16/12/2016 10:20

Exactly, Wolpertinger. I always do a full load, and do about 4 - 5 loads a week for the three of us.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 16/12/2016 10:24

I always do a full load too I just sort it first. Noises to get away with a lot less but now ds is a sporty teen there is TONS of it!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 16/12/2016 10:25

Noises= I used to HmmGrin

rightsofwomen · 16/12/2016 11:55

I just put everything in together on 40C.
No one with skin allergies or anything and we've never had a problem with NOT washing bed linen, towels and underwear at 60C.

Now and again I'll chuck a load of towels in on 60C - maybe twice a year.

If there something new and dark I'll make sure there are no lights in its first wash.

And sometimes I'll round up all the sports wear and wash with Halo sports wash.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 16/12/2016 11:59

I sort everything obsessively but always do a full load, except for woollies for which you are only supposed to half fill the machine.

We do 6 or 7 loads per week on average for the four of us (no nappies). I don't think that's unusual or excessive.

Itsmytemporaryname · 16/12/2016 12:12

I just bought one of these (but with three deep drawers) and I love it but realised when I got home that I need two because I sort so much.
Hadn't realised how uptight I was being with my washing!

sianihedgehog · 16/12/2016 14:15

Darks, lights, brights (in summer), delicates (very occasionally). Every so often I do a really hot wash or one with bleach or something, but on an ad hoc basis.

Groovee · 16/12/2016 15:05

I do darks/whites/colours
