Ceramic Hob - to buy or not to buy?

Hi

I am getting a new kitchen (i have a very small galley kitchen).

Quite like the look of the ceramic hobs (with one or two halogen rings).

However a bit dubious about the control - are they any good to cook on? Does anyone have any experience?

no.

i prefer to cook on gas.

busy2busy · 11/02/2007 19:00

Hi - is that because you prefer gas - or didn't like the ceramic?

Ceramic awful IMO. Hard to control temp and a right pain when pans boil over as water just floods whole hob top.
I prefer gas hobs too if that is an option.

busy2busy · 11/02/2007 19:14

thanks - hadn't thought of the flood the surface issue ;-(

Ceramic - real pain. Spills are a probelem and you have to buy a special scraper forthe surface, and a 'proprietry' spray cleaner, and they stay hot long after switch off though there is a 'warning' light...heat control is the worst, eg from boil to simmer, and getting a good low heat for rice is a nuisance.

Like many things in life, look gorgeous but a royal pain in the arse.

Go gas!!

Have used gas and ceramic and I do prefer gas, but couldn't have it in current kitchen (except at extortionate cost) so have ceramic. I find temp on mine is fine to control. Max up to 6 until boiling, then down to 1 and all fine. Occasionally does boil over if I'm distracted by DD1 or DD2 but isn't too much hassle to clean up. Does polish up nicely and looks good when I get my a*se in gear to clean the kitchen. HTH

colander · 11/02/2007 19:27

Forgot - I haven't got a scraper, or a special cleaner. I use a vileda green sponge thing and ceramic hob cleaner (available in all supermarkets I have been in) and I'm sure that isn't what it says in the instructions, but seems to work fine and hasn't scratched it.

busy2busy · 11/02/2007 19:29

lol - I had a horrible suspicion this would be the view - I so wanted the 'excellent' so easy to use and clean response.

Look lovely - pain to use??

i have electric ceramic and do prefer to gas BUT its a b*stard to keep clean, even if if just cleaned mine(and it still has the odd burnt on bit back left..its still dusty..arrggghhh

PanicPants · 11/02/2007 19:45

We've just bought a ceramic hob, as I wanted it to look nice over gas.. I was sick to death of having to keep removing the burners to clean under my gas hob.

So I've gritted my teeth and gone for a ceramic one, to look nice when it's clean!

SoupDragon · 11/02/2007 19:51

I have one and it's sh!te.

SoupDragon · 11/02/2007 19:52

I clean mine with one of those metal scourers that looks like a round curly brillo pad!!

PanicPants · 11/02/2007 20:09

Oh don't!!!

Someone say it will be lovely?

It's sat in the hallway waiting to be installed

busy2busy · 11/02/2007 20:53

Ooo Panic Pants - I'm with you - someone say how lovely they are - really good to cook with and virtually cleans themselves.

one word .....

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

PanicPants · 11/02/2007 21:02

Just you and me then busy2busy.

I still think it will lok fab [stubbon emoticon]

nutcracker · 11/02/2007 21:02

I have just had one and tbh I wouldn't have one again mainly because they are so hard to keep clean. If you spill evebn a drop of water it's really hard to get off.

As for the heat control though mine is great, it goes from boil to simmer at the slightest turn or back up to boil, basically whatever you want.

PanicPants · 11/02/2007 21:05

I'll just keep re-reading colanders post and ignore the rest of you.

Oh it'll look OK but that won't stop it being sh!te.

SoupDragon · 11/02/2007 21:12

Seriously - those curly metal scourers cleans mine up a treat. Doesn't scratch it either (more's the pity. If it did I may be able to get a new one on my insurance)

PanicPants · 11/02/2007 21:18

Maybe thats the solution. I'll just lovingly dust it and live off takeaways

.... and buy a box of curly scourers.

Btw - do you need specific pots and pans to prevent scratching?

TheOriginalXENA · 11/02/2007 21:25

I loved mine - we have moved and i miss my old one
