Dinnerware. Extraordinarily exciting

I'd like a nice set of plates.

• mostly but not completely white, maybe a geometric pattern round the rim
• dishwasher proof

I'm not keen on the shape of the Denby ones. Ideal would be something like these Wedgewood beauties but with a colour rather than gilt, and cheaper! Any ideas?

Very (aka Littlewoods) has a surprisingly good selection at various price points, and is all decent quality.

Is there a Range near you? I was in there today and noticed dinner service, white with grey/silver geometric pattern on rims. Didn't see price though... They tend to sell them individually so you can make up however many settings you want

I don't bother with 'sets'. I have a rough idea of the colour and size I like (and the shape in eg bowls) but apart from that, I just take what arrives. My cupboards are full of what some people would call 'mismatches'.

It saves on palpitations if one becomes chipped or crazed, though.

It's pricey, but the David Mellor dinnerware set in bone china is lovely. I eye it with envy whenever I am in the shop.

Avoid Sainsbury's - I had whole dinner & serving sets bought for me as my new house gift by family - whole lot had cracked glaze within a year with grim mold in all the cracks unless I bleach soaked the dishes as normal washing wasn't enough. Sainsbury's couldn't give a shit when I tried to complain and offered me a £20 voucher.

snaffle - I've had something similar happen with a cheap Ikea set. It's really frustrating.

Also, I second what buddy says about avoiding gold and silver rims - they rip off in the dishwasher, and even if you wash by hand they start to look tatty really fast.

I've been looking for crockery recently, and I am a bit at how bad some of it is. There is a Biba set in House of Fraser that is £££ and looks gorgeous from a distance, but when you get up close, the transfers are really poorly applied and overlap weirdly where the ends meet:

It would drive me absolutely mad to notice it every time I ate! And you'd have to wash up the things by hand as well as the metal is not dishwasher safe.

If it isn't too twee have a look at Emma Bridgewater. They do some lovely patterns and they mix and match really well. If you look it up on eBay you can find older more collectible patterns.

I've been round the houses with crockery. I've had patterns, bright patterns, geometric, accent plates etc. All have cracked or faded badly after repeated dishwasher cleaning. I now buy plain white, which I know sounds boring, but it's so much easier. Maxim from m and s is white porcelain, plain and very reasonable. You could introduce accent serving plates?

I know you said you don't like Denby, but we've had the Denby white dinner service going now for several years and just added extra white bits to it as we've found them. It's great for in the dishwasher and we use it for formal entertaining as well as every day. Being white, you can dress it up - black granite placemats, coasters, napkins etc, gold on Christmas day and it always looks fab.

We have that Wedgewood set as our "good" set.

For day to day we have John Lewis Luna Croft which so far has worn really well and is nice enough for a dinner party.

Next has nice ones but loads chipped on me, the cheap and the pricier range.

Sorry, ours is Denby. The set is over 8 years old and still looks as good as new after daily use, dishwashers and being used by young DCs from the time they turn 2. If any was damaged, it's easy to replace items and we've topped up over time (getting a full set of smaller plates for DCs, extra items, complimentary oven-table ware) as our needs have changed.

Gurls makes a good point - I ditched some Next crockery as several pieces chipped and the M&S stuff I replaced it with is wearing much better. Steer clear of stoneware if you want to avoid chips too.

I bought some ikea stuff and found it very poor quality. The glaze scratched easily and then looked really tatty very quickly.
