Washing Machine has died - WWYD

BeMorePanda · 11/09/2016 17:16

13 yo Bosch. Looks like it's stopped spinning. I don't have a prob with buying a new one. Money is a bit tight (I'm SP) but obviously I need a WM however;

I am just putting my flat on the market and agents expect it to sell quickly.

We will be moving to a new area and I plan on renting for a while to get to know the place, before buying.

Don't rental properties usually come with a WM? Also many houses have inbuilt WM these days. So I'd rather wait if possible.

I work FT so using a laundry mat for 3-4 months will be a massive PITA. As would storing a new machine I wouldn't be using.

I'm guessing it's probably not worth fixing a machine this old?

So WWYD?

I'd rent a washing machine for a few months.

Mine is on it's last legs and I'm in a similar situation however the repair man got mine going again for 60 quid he's not sure how long it will last and its helluva noisy its 12 years old. Worth a shot.

AlpacaLypse · 11/09/2016 17:23

Aargh! My first thought was my Bosch (similar age) dropped down dead about a month ago, and I'm delighted with the John Lewis own brand (made for them by AEG but costing less than half AEG price.

I doubt it's worth fixing, although the local independent washing machine repair man round here only charges a very low call out fee if he decides a machine is irreparable or not economic to repair.

I don't suppose it's possible to rent washing machines anymore?

Or ebay/FB selling page/freecycle for a second hand one? Wait until you know if you'll need one long term before splurging on new, with warranty etc etc.?

wowfudge · 11/09/2016 17:24

I'd buy a new machine. You don't have to pay a lot for a decent machine and you can use it your new place - tell the landlord you have a machine and take it with you. The only thing I have known to be routinely provided in rental places is an oven. Your buyers may have their own and not want your second hand one.

rabbit123 · 11/09/2016 17:27

If it's just that it's not spinning, it could just be a damaged drum belt or motor brushes, which are both cheap and easy repairs

Imnotaslimjim · 11/09/2016 17:28

Do consider having the machine looked at before you do anything else. It could be as simple as a snapped belt. Did it make any kind of noises before it quit? That can give an indication of the problem.

If it's beyond repair I'd have a look at the local selling pages on facebook or gumtree and find a cheap 2nd hand one to tide you over.

DramaAlpaca · 11/09/2016 17:32

I agree with rabbit123 above - if it's stopped spinning it might be something really simple that can be fixed quickly & cheaply, such as the brushes.

AngelBlue12 · 11/09/2016 17:35

None of the places we've rented have ever had any white goods inc so don't count on it.

Redglitter · 11/09/2016 17:37

My mums 16 year old machine stopped spinning last week. Local repair man fixed it for £45. I'd try and get it fixed first

BeMorePanda · 11/09/2016 17:42

Ok thank you all - lots of options. I hadn't thought of renting.

I will look into repair first - though round here (central London) call out tend to be pretty expensive.

Ideally I'd like to buy lovely new machine once in newly purchased home.

Damn timing!

wowfudge · 11/09/2016 17:42

Yep - if repairing is cheap, do that first.

BeMorePanda · 11/09/2016 17:49

I don't recall any noises.
Just went to get a sodden load out today and realised the drum isn't spinning.

Oops - appliances are like light bulbs. They all like to go out at once.

Hisense My cousin has this washing machine and it is fantastic! I am not sure if the price is too much for your budget.

EmGee · 12/09/2016 12:22

I had this problem recently with a 15yo Bosch machine. In the end I just bought a new machine but in your case, I would probably try repairing it first. Be ideal if it just costs 45 quid or so!

BeMorePanda · 12/09/2016 13:38

Gosh I'm
Doing nothing. Just ignoring it for now.
It's a busy week.

Will ask handy friend if he fixes WM first. Doing that now!!

OP posts:
BeMorePanda · 12/09/2016 13:42

It's been a brilliant machine. Especially as I had a regular bed wetter for several years.

In my part of London all the laundrettes do service washes. Drop off your washing and collect washed' dried and folded. I know some working mothers find it very useful.

chunkymum1 · 12/09/2016 13:58

Ours stopped spinning once. I was going to throw it away but DH googled the problem and found out the motor brushes had worn down. With a bit of help from google he replaced the brushes himself- the parts cost less that £10 and it took about five minutes to do. Looking on the internet it was not easy to match up the right brushes but a local electrical spares shop were able to help us out.

BananaPie · 12/09/2016 22:01

Last time I rented, I got the landlord to take away the washing machine that was already in the house and brought my own one with me. It wasn't a problem.

BeMorePanda · 12/09/2016 22:10

Friend no go.
Repairs in central London - I have to give all my details before getting even close to a quote. Looks like local repair shop has gone.

So looking a buying now. But later in the week.

Thanks all - you've been really helpful.

You could send your laundry out while you're in limbo? Laundrapp and laundryheap both collect and deliver service washes...

poisonedbypen · 12/09/2016 22:13

Electrolux make John Lewis washing machines. They also make AEG, as well as others (eg Zanussi) but it doesn't mean John lewis are the same as AEG.
