Washing Machine has died - WWYD

13 yo Bosch. Looks like it's stopped spinning. I don't have a prob with buying a new one. Money is a bit tight (I'm SP) but obviously I need a WM however;

I am just putting my flat on the market and agents expect it to sell quickly.

We will be moving to a new area and I plan on renting for a while to get to know the place, before buying.

Don't rental properties usually come with a WM? Also many houses have inbuilt WM these days. So I'd rather wait if possible.

I work FT so using a laundry mat for 3-4 months will be a massive PITA. As would storing a new machine I wouldn't be using.

I'm guessing it's probably not worth fixing a machine this old?

Mine is on it's last legs and I'm in a similar situation however the repair man got mine going again for 60 quid he's not sure how long it will last and its helluva noisy its 12 years old. Worth a shot.

Aargh! My first thought was my Bosch (similar age) dropped down dead about a month ago, and I'm delighted with the John Lewis own brand (made for them by AEG but costing less than half AEG price.

I doubt it's worth fixing, although the local independent washing machine repair man round here only charges a very low call out fee if he decides a machine is irreparable or not economic to repair.

I don't suppose it's possible to rent washing machines anymore?

Or ebay/FB selling page/freecycle for a second hand one? Wait until you know if you'll need one long term before splurging on new, with warranty etc etc.?

I'd buy a new machine. You don't have to pay a lot for a decent machine and you can use it your new place - tell the landlord you have a machine and take it with you. The only thing I have known to be routinely provided in rental places is an oven. Your buyers may have their own and not want your second hand one.

If it's just that it's not spinning, it could just be a damaged drum belt or motor brushes, which are both cheap and easy repairs

Do consider having the machine looked at before you do anything else. It could be as simple as a snapped belt. Did it make any kind of noises before it quit? That can give an indication of the problem.

If it's beyond repair I'd have a look at the local selling pages on facebook or gumtree and find a cheap 2nd hand one to tide you over.

I agree with rabbit123 above - if it's stopped spinning it might be something really simple that can be fixed quickly & cheaply, such as the brushes.

None of the places we've rented have ever had any white goods inc so don't count on it.

My mums 16 year old machine stopped spinning last week. Local repair man fixed it for £45. I'd try and get it fixed first

Ok thank you all - lots of options. I hadn't thought of renting.

I will look into repair first - though round here (central London) call out tend to be pretty expensive.

Ideally I'd like to buy lovely new machine once in newly purchased home.

I had this problem recently with a 15yo Bosch machine. In the end I just bought a new machine but in your case, I would probably try repairing it first. Be ideal if it just costs 45 quid or so!

In my part of London all the laundrettes do service washes. Drop off your washing and collect washed' dried and folded. I know some working mothers find it very useful.

Ours stopped spinning once. I was going to throw it away but DH googled the problem and found out the motor brushes had worn down. With a bit of help from google he replaced the brushes himself- the parts cost less that £10 and it took about five minutes to do. Looking on the internet it was not easy to match up the right brushes but a local electrical spares shop were able to help us out.

Last time I rented, I got the landlord to take away the washing machine that was already in the house and brought my own one with me. It wasn't a problem.

Repairs in central London - I have to give all my details before getting even close to a quote. Looks like local repair shop has gone.

So looking a buying now. But later in the week.

You could send your laundry out while you're in limbo? Laundrapp and laundryheap both collect and deliver service washes...

Electrolux make John Lewis washing machines. They also make AEG, as well as others (eg Zanussi) but it doesn't mean John lewis are the same as AEG.
