Do you regret buying a cordless vacuum cleaner?

I was about to buy the Dyson v6 but there's a big thread on a local FB group this morning saying how awful they are! That they don't pick up big bits of dirt and the charge is about 6 minutes.

Are they awful? Is the G-tech one or the Bosch one better? Are they all just a space-stealer?!

WhoKnows - the DC59 only lasted about 20mins max which was a pain as I have good sized house. The things that most irritated me though were pickup on hard floor. Brilliant for fine dust but you could spend 10mins chasing a cheerio and it would just keep spitting them out sideways. In addition, when I emptied the canister I always had to use a knife to get everything out as it would just get stuck every time. On the floor tool the motor was on one side so it never cleaned right up to the skirting on that side. Not major problems and it was still my only much used vacuum for 2 yrs but the v8 is just much better.
DH who doesn't vacuum very often doesn't get it but as someone who vacuums the whole house every day usually and more downstairs because of kids and pets, it's noticeably better and worth the jump in money. The fluffy head is brilliant and gets everything first time and the one for carpets is brilliant too. I've only had to use max power once or twice because it's so efficient so never run out of battery yet.

It's sad I know but I never want a corded vacuum again it's just so much easier to use and does the job extremely well. Hope that helpsSmile

App, my washing machine? Really?
It's 13 years old Grin - but still going strong at least 2x/day.
It's Siemens Serie IQ 1600 fwiw.

I really just meant that IMO a family needs a wasting machine even more than they need a cordless vacuum cleaner much as I love our Dyson V6.

DialBforBaby · 24/08/2016 19:58

Love love love our Bosch Athlet. It has revolutionised hoovering in our house! From never to occasionally Grin

RavioliOnToast · 24/08/2016 19:59

I have had mine about 6 weeks now and by God, I fucking love it. I have the basic v6. I can Hoover whole house with one charge. I have 2 dcs but no pets so can't comment of pet hair etc but really, it's so brilliant!

GlowWine · 24/08/2016 20:26

I've got the V6 animal too and am happy. Charge is enough to do a whole floor (3 rooms) or the living room and I rarely do more than that, or two set of stairs in one go. I did run out of charge when 'deep cleaning' the whole house and it took two or three charges (with much needed hoovering breaks for me)
The 'animal' bit copes well with my DCs long long hair that really clings to the carpet. And those brush heads dismantle really easily to remove the tangles later.
Have to add I'm a cordless and also dyson novice, after having a Miele cat&dog for years and years.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 24/08/2016 22:45

Thanks Lucy, that's really helpful. We have a small house so rarely run out of charge with the DC59, we only have hard floor in the kitchen and bathroom but I totally get you with the cheerio thing! I keep an old crochet hook in my kitchen pen pot for getting the stuck waste out of it too. We've had it for three years, our only vac for 2.5 since our corded Miele died and I would never go back to corded now but it does seem flimsy so I think it will need replacing before too long.

I asked Dyson before buying mine too see which was best for 50/50 carpets and hard floors and they recommended the Total Clean as it's got the fluffy head for hard floors and the powerful one for carpets. Got it direct from Dyson, price matched to the cheapest online, extra discount for having a Dyson before, free set of extra tools and free delivery. I love my v6 Total Clean.

FYI, it's the only vacuum I have and the charge is enough to do my whole house (a 2 up, 2 down). I attached it to the wall of our cupboard so it's space-saving too. Makes me vacuum more often (including the car as it's so much easier) and I wouldn't go back. Now get very frustrated having to deal with cables and plugs in every room with the steam mop as I realise what a faff it is! (Especially with all that bending at 8 months pregnant). Highly recommend it.

KoalaDownUnder · 25/08/2016 07:46

I don't know what kind of head my Dyson has. Confused It has a few interchangeable ones, but I only ever use the big one with rotating brushes inside?

It does an incredible job of my hard floors, anyway (no carpet here).

Figureof80 · 25/08/2016 07:57

I bought a V6. Absolute rubbish. Cleans about 2 rooms before battery power runs out (12 minutes maximum time I've achieved), then infuriatingly takes hours and hours to recharge. Also unit is very heavy, wrist starts aching even in short time it can be used because you have to keep trigger down so can't adjust holding position. Instructions were minimal and unhelpful it has taken me weeks to work out how to remove cylinder from unit so can clean dust/dirt wedged at top. It was very expensive and so disappointing. Worst buy I have made in decades. Would never buy dyson again.

KoalaDownUnder · 25/08/2016 08:01

^ surprising how much experiences differ!

I utterly adore my V6, don't find it heavy at all. And the charge lasts my whole house!

My mum and my sister have actually both bought one on the strength of using mine.

SleepFreeZone · 25/08/2016 12:55

The battery time issue was the reason I didn't want to spend more cash on them. DP reckons we are on the brink of a battery technological jump forward so I'm happy with my cheap little cordless to clean little and often throughout the week and accept that if I want to deep clean the house in one go I'm going to have to drag the heavy corded hoover out.

rollonthesummer · 25/08/2016 17:35

I've bitten the bullet and ordered one!!

I'll report back when it arrives!

Hi , I started a thread the other week about Dyson cordless. I would like one mainly to store it under my breakfast bar as I have no cupboard for my big Dyson to go in .

I had a quick test of them in Currys yesterday not as an excuse to stand in front of their fans to keep cool . Can I ask whether you have your holder thingy 'plumbed' into the electric or can you plug them into a socket ?

I've heard so many mixed reviews and they're expensive so I'm still dithering !

Sorry to hijack .

KoalaDownUnder · 25/08/2016 17:54

Wanna - you can just plug them into a socket.

KoalaDownUnder · 25/08/2016 17:55

(I think 'hard-wired' is the term you're looking for Wink but they don't need that - the holder thingy is just a wall bracket)

Pikawhoo · 25/08/2016 18:00

I have the Dyson v6 handheld and I LOVE it.

It was quite an extravagant purchase and it was totally worth it. I can just whoosh up little crumbs or bits of dust without having to haul a a big vacuum out of the cupboard.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 25/08/2016 18:05

We haven't got anywhere for the holder that's near a plug socket so we keep the head part plugged in in a corner, the long part down the side of a dresser and the tools in a cupboard. Not ideal but it works.

WannaBeDifferent · 25/08/2016 18:22

Thanks Koala yes , hard wired is what I mean !

I also looked at the Dyson mini uprights - I love my big Dyson but can't bear for it to be on show .

This is the space I am thinking of putting the hand held, although the motor bit is still quite bulky .

Do you regret buying a cordless vacuum cleaner?
evilharpy · 25/08/2016 18:28

We have a Gtech K9 and also the Multi. They are both absolutely shit and I wish I hadn't wasted the money. The K9 is especially shit on wooden floors.

rollonthesummer · 27/08/2016 16:40

Well, my Dyson has arrived and I bloody love it!

It is light-copes well with wooden floors, bathroom Lino and carpet (I just got the basic v6 with no funky extra heads), has done a 3 storey house on one charge (haven't yet needed to use the Boost function as its picking everything up fine). I'm going to attach it to the wall permanently and hard wire it into the mains so it's on charge all of the time. DH has even been hoovering cobwebs with it! It is much less strain on my back and doesnt take up much space.

All in-a success! Thank you for your helpful posts!

WannaBeDifferent · 29/08/2016 04:00

I've been dropping hints and think I'm getting one for my birthday !!!

chloechloe · 29/08/2016 13:01

I've just ordered the V6 Total Clean and am super excited! I live in Germany and they don't seem to have the V8 over here yet (just as well, DH was already shocked at the price of the V6).

Now then, DD is 17mo - am wondering whether I can teach her to clean crumbs with the hand-held!?!?!?
