My loo smells of wee

How can I get rid of the smell please? It is a separate loo, in its own small room, so separate from the rest of the bathroom. Flooring is amtico. I've cleaned the loo and mopped the floor but I can still smell it and its driving me nuts.

Is the wee from boys or cats or both?

Ive got three boys and a husband and I get the same problem. I can scrub & bleach the lav & flooring til the cows come home but I think over time the flooring gets tainted with the smell. Sounds gross but getting down and having a niff of the floor round the toilet might help you locate where the smells coming from.

Rip up the flooring and replace with tiles? I imagine the smell is ingrained in the floor as I don't think amtico is properly waterproof?? We have karndean in the dining room and kitchen and I think a smell could get trapped in the edges IYSWIM?

Steam cleaner? Bleach? Zoflora?

I have much sympathy. My cat did a wee behind my TV on parquet floor and I have tried for over a year to get rid of the last remnants of the smell but it is very stubborn and once it gets deep into the flooring there is really no hope.

My stinky loo has a Saniflow attached. Zoo flora, sprinkled liberally helps. As did replacing the toilet with a very small crack in it that allowed water to pool and stink.....

With amtico it really sounds like it's gone deep under the floor Iayer. That's very hard to eliminate without replacing the floor.

DS is always splashing and missing. Sealed tiles are the only way to keep the smell under control.

Or make them sit down. 😡

Wipe down the walls. There will be splashes.

I use toilet wipes round the outside and on the floor just round the loos. Also have towelling pedestal mats from John Lewis so they can just be thrown in the washing machine if someone misses. We have got tiled floors too.

Ditto about the walls around the toilets. There will be splashes. Trust me.

Also clean loos several times a day

Try steam cleaning it. I steam clean mine and all this brown, stale urine comes bubbling out of the cracks in the toilet. It stinks but is quite satisfying. My DSs have awful aim.

DH obviously wees standing up, but DS sits down. We don't have pets. So I think it must be one of them, as obviously my aim is perfect.

I will definitely try zoflora, as I haven't done that yet, and I will do the walls. I've used bleach liberally. The loo is cleaned twice a week, now I think I should clean it more often. Replacing the floor would be a faff as the room is so tiny as tradespeople in our area don't really like small jobs.

Twice a week Doing it daily would definitely help. I am in no way house-proud but ...

I had this recently in a new house, it was the toilet seat which had a split in it at the back near the hinges, full of wee. It had actually expanded but you couldn't see it because of the hinge.

Really Larry? Does everyone else clean their loo daily then? I have never cleaned a loo daily and I'm in my 40s. This is the first time I've lived in a house with a smelly loo .

I will also inspect the loo seat for cracks! Never before will a loo have seen so much attention.

I clean mine if it looks like it has got wee or anything else on it Well which is probably no more than twice a week.

Actually dust is more of a problem on my loo than anything else - old house, old windows, top of a windy hill = dust.

If it's a wooden loo seat they need replacing every six months.

I have to clean my toilet everyday. Sometimes several times.

DS consumes a lot of weetabix and shreddies and liberally artexes the pan during his evening sleep poo...😒

Then in the morning if he sits to pee it sometimes goes under the seat.

I also put a little bleach down every night when everyone is asleep. Like a toilet fairy.

Its a plastic seat. I think it would be worth replacing, crack or no crack in it, as that's an easy job!

We clean the loo daily. On the occasions it's left longer it honks!

Zoflora is good but keep cats away if you have them. Can be used all around the base and walls too.

When was the last time you replaced the loo seat? That helps a lot.

I clean the loo once a week. Clearly I am a slattern (or slut as that delightful UKIP man would say). But who has time to do it more then that? Especially if you work long hours?

Takes five mins if you do it daily.

How does replacing the loo seat help if it is something like this?

I have only ever replaced mine when broken unless the house is new and have never had a wee smell.

OP a couple of houses back we actually ended up replacing the floorboards in an old house we bought, such was the wee smell. I took up the lino and the boards were stained with wee. We were replacing the bathroom anyway but would have sanded the boards if they were decent.

Years and years of wee, yuk.

Even those plastic seats can smell.

the smell will be ingrained in the flooring even though its amtico. can you lift whats around the toilet and replace only those tiles?

My son manages to wee right up under the rim at the front, totally out of sight. I have no idea how he did it, but I had to crane my head right into the toilet and look up to see it. It was yellow and crusty and smelly in an otherwise clean bathroom. Scrubbing with an old toothbrush got it off and fixed the smell.
