Welcome all - and thanks to CotswoldStrife for leading us through May. It's going to be a momentous month on the political front, but this is where we can concentrate on the domestic front instead.

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chat along the way.

Link to the Flylady website Flylady

Don't let the somewhat sickly and barftastic language of the site put you off: the underlying system is sound!

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework; which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead!

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around next month again!

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with masses of bumph. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

** And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight - it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the babysteps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names!) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders!

Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings Launch Pad

Oh and don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t! . Some of us have been on here for years and some of us natter rather a lot – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers are very, very welcome!

Good morning everyone. I had a really busy end to the week, so I have had a lovely lazy lie in. Really rubbish forecast here, so lots of opportunities to tackle the hotspots.

Our bedroom is probably one of the most difficult rooms for me, as I just don't have enough storage space for clothes. I am also a beauty product junkie, and have far too much crap. Also, I find its the easiest room to shut the door on, and the least likely room for others to go in, apart from immediate family.

To do
Usual Saturday washing.
General tidying of 'stuff'

Greymalkin · 18/06/2016 16:19

Mad have you ever thought of trying the Kondo method? Quite a few of us have found that Kondo works for decluttering and FlyLady works for cleaning and keeping thing ticking over.

I kondo'd all my clothes earlier in the year and I am so glad I did - I don't miss anything that I chucked, I barely even remember what I chucked, except that there was A LOT of it! I now only have the clothes that I really do love and always feel comfortable in.

MadSprocker · 18/06/2016 19:47

I did Kondo last year, but just have too much for the space I have, and regular charity shop jaunts. We moved two years ago and went from one large chest of drawers each, to one chest of drawers between us, so all my winter going out stuff, pj's, jeans, jumpers, plus summer stuff I haven't got room for are in boxes under my bed. It really is my 'avoidance' room in terms of being tidy.

Ta da
Two lots of washing on.
Box found for hot spot 'stuff' to find permanent homes for.
Invited my dad round for dinner, so cooked.
Children completed homework.
Cut my first lot of sweetpeas from my cut flower garden, pic attached.

BlueEyeshadow · 18/06/2016 20:44

Ta da!
Boys swimming
Grocery shopping
Tidying up
Met kitten
Brought him home :)

He's a surprisingly chilled little thing when not being bounced on by over-excited boys. Currently hiding in his little bed but has been out and purring.

Cagliostro · 18/06/2016 20:48

I've done nothing today except pick up DS from his first night away (with Beavers) - was a 2hr round trip! He loved it though.

I OTOH am feeling lazy and bored

CotswoldStrife · 18/06/2016 23:05

Lovely flowers! I love sweet peas (gazes into own garden hopefully).

Not much flying done today, but had a nice day out. Shattered now, though! Glass of vino and an early night chez Strife tonight!

FoolandFitz · 19/06/2016 09:48

Morning everyone

Lovely flowers mad I love sweetpeas
awww@kitten being brought home blueeyeshadow. Boys sound excited. Smile
greymalkin I'm a big Kondo fan too - I do have to re-Kondo every now and then because my tastes have changed.

We went out last night for a curry with my family. DS fell asleep at the restaurant - I think he found it all a bit too much and it was his way of coping. It was only 8 pm!

Ta Da this morning:

Looked through paper work accumulated this week and filed/recycled
Phoned energy supplier to arrange fit of smart meter
Made sure DS wrote in his dad's card very neatly
Made breakfast in bed for DP
Put wash away
Put wash in machine
Put away dishes from yesterday (I'm not very good at shining my sink)
Added things to do this week in BulletJournal (work and home)
Looked on google maps how to get to training site tomorrow
Just off to put wash out

Have a great day everyone.

MadSprocker · 19/06/2016 09:54

I find it much easier to fly in my garden, than in my house. I spent and hour or so sifting stones from earth the other day, and it was bliss compared to sorting out paperwork Smile

Lots of today focused on Father's Day for my DH and my df.

To do
Load dishwasher
Hang out washing from yesterday
Nag children to clean out Guinea pigs
Take mad dog for a walk
Get things sorted for the upcoming week

Have a great day!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 19/06/2016 10:24

Sorry, didn't do links yesterday, we were in London till quite late then tired.

Sunday's Babystep laundry

Sunday is Renew your spirit day.

OP posts:
YesEinsteinsMumDid · 19/06/2016 10:34

To do:

  1. Get up and go buy painkillers
  2. Take pain killers and stay out of the house until they kick in
  3. Return to house, try to ignore sound of someone taking a sledge hammer to the bathroom and finish clearing the loft and my room ready for tomo's builders
  4. Be grateful that am in the office tomo and not the house.
  5. collect child with massive round trip (ditto re being out house and not in it listening to noise)
  6. Collapse into bed with stupid early alarm clock set because you know, there is still stuff to do and I was too tired today to finish it.

This is my day Hmm Sounds great doesn't it. Anyone fancy a swap? WinkGrin
Anyhow First job on list is a nice one so will get that done. Tatty Pie. yes the plot has been lost

BlueEyeshadow · 19/06/2016 15:11

Brew Wine Chocolate for Einstein

Renewing our spirits by playing with the kitten - he's a fabulously nutty, bold boy now he's come out of hiding. Grin

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 19/06/2016 20:32

Just have to finish my room and collapse into bed. Ds is back and sulking because he was told to put his clothes away and he doesn't want to and he really doesn't want to go to bed soooo fed up of these arguments.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 19/06/2016 22:12

Quiet on here today, hope everyone's ok.

Blue - he is gorgeous! Take lots of photos, he will grow up fast. That's my only regret about getting ours as adults, I would love to have seen kitten photos.

Einstein - hope you are asleep.

A catch-up day today here, mainly with laundry. 4 loads of washing done and dried, our bed changed and I'm midway through a pile of ironing. Also did the main weekly food shop and half an hour at the allotment. Tired now. Back with links in a minute.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 19/06/2016 22:17

Links for Monday

Just realised I posted tomorrow's today (I'm so used to posting with the next days date). So tomorrow is laundry. Today is to read a Flylady testimonial.

Mission - this week we are in the master bedroom and the mission is to get rid of anything which is under your bed. Tricky one for me as we have a storage divan, so all the spare duvets, pillows, winter coats, boots are under there and I'm not getting rid!

Monday is Home Blessing Day

I don't really do home blessing properly at the moment, think I ought to get back in the habit TBH, but it won't be on a Monday.

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 19/06/2016 22:46

Please miss May I be excused from flying this week pretty please. There is no floor to hoover (the contents of the loft is on it) and the beds were done friday and and and. Well pretty please miss.

CotswoldStrife · 19/06/2016 23:03

Permission granted! Grin

Lovely weekend, DD went out with DH today for a bit to have some father and daughter time. I did some ironing fantacular and the kitchen is a bombsite again with all the cooking and I burnt my finger on the griddle cooking a steak if I get up early enough tomorrow I will clean up and then cook brownies for the week (DD likes one with her packed lunch).

Raining again here. Did hang some washing out early on though. Busy week ahead (with one particularly manic day in the middle) but bring it on, I'm feeling strong watch me whimper by 10.30am tomorrow Grin

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 19/06/2016 23:13

Einstein - sounds as though we need to re-open the naughty corner.

Cotswold - I've left the kitchen in a mess too, been batch cooking tonight and will have to face the consequences in the morning.

OP posts:
MadSprocker · 20/06/2016 08:31

Good morning everyone. Blue your kitten is gorgeous. We have allergies here, so I always have to appreciate other people's pets.

I am going to try really hard with my bedroom this week. Perhaps I should take shaming photos, then I would have to do something.

To do
Monday is bedding washing day, so stripping and washing beds.
Clear kitchen from general weekend mess.
Put clothes away yawn
Hotspots

Having my hair cut and bleached this morning, then meeting friends for lunch, so less time for flying not that I am looking for any excuse to avoid housework

Slingcrump · 20/06/2016 10:19

Hi all,

Mahoosively mad here: by some truly wierd conflation of events - this week will bring solutions or problems to three rather vital areas of our lives - all at once! So stressed I can't focus on things: either mahoosively busy to keep distracted or feeling a bit bludgeoned by the pressures and hiding away from the world (or I would if there wasn't humungous end-of-term things happening). And we will be travelling elsewhere in Europe and to the Balkans this week and next too. So much to do I cannot breathe but just wanted to say before our departure:

Blue Smokey Joe looks absolutely gorgeous and as if he has made himself right at home!! Congratulations!!

Sweet peas are beautiful too MadSprocker

Whoknows and Einstein I will join you both in the naughty corner later - although neither of you deserve to be in there - of that I am certain!!

Oh, as for Flying ...I've given up ... house full of drying racks draped with holiday clothing/wedding clothing/summer camp clothing ... suitcases ...last minute paperwork ... present wrapping gubbins ... one big hot spot frankly. I normally like to leave the house in a good state when we go away (not least for pet sitters) but in this instance, they are going to have to lump it; CBA with everything else going on!!

Tally-ho! Won't be back for a while but cheery wing flaps to one and all in meantime!!

Stilllivinginazoo · 20/06/2016 10:48

Master bedrooms guessing thats my room.oh dear.its a dumping room for anything we don't know where else to put and is do cluttered I often sleep sofa as my bed disappears under the crapSad

I am hoping to make a dent in it(think pathway if you will,or a section)if I can get some motivation going to actually make a start!!

Tadas(avoidance tactics)
Fed cats
Bins/recycling out
Washing on
Sort 3hotspots in front room
Sort hallway shoe box
Feed zoolets
Make lunches
Clean bath and sink
Harpic lav
Quick nip shops
Wash in dryer, second load on
School run
My breakfast then wash all dishes
Sort a pile paperwork 4 more still waiting to he sorted
Dry stuff fold and put away, second load into dryer
Swept stairs and wipe hall floor
Bag up clothes zoolets outgrown for charity shops(3binbags)

(Wonders if sit naughty corner an option instead face my room.I could bring muffins?)

Stilllivinginazoo · 20/06/2016 10:49

PS have a safe trip slingcrump

Slingcrump · 20/06/2016 12:37

Thanks Stilllivinginazoo, we leave on Wed morning after dd's last exam (which ends around 10.30 am) and of course dh, bless him, has gone and made things way more stressful by fitting in a client visit to a third European country on our way to the other two, so we are having to meet up with him half way which means lots of unforeseen complications and harder for me with bad back hulking luggage. Worse of course he only mentioned this an hour ago because apparently that is when he first knew his presence was required Hmm I could quite happily strangle him right now frankly Grin

Slingcrump · 20/06/2016 12:44

[plumps up pillows, wafts feather duster about, stocks bar, and hangs up bunting in naughty corner prior to departure]

Stilllivinginazoo · 20/06/2016 16:32

I went in and tidy up a mountain of shampoo, conditioner, shower gels and scrubs that are not for zoolets to squander and box them up and ditto other beauty bits n bobs(foot scrub, face packs etc I do with dd2 on occasion). Its cleared a small space and I've cleared my bedGrin
