None! Can't afford one.

Am I jealous of those on THAT other thread with mortgages of £200k - NO!

Oh but I wish I had a nice big house!

Our council tax is £147pcm, we pay as much as people in London because there a lot of people live in a dense area, up here few people live in a large expanse so they use this to justify huge council tax bills. Add that to our rent of £450pcm and that brings us to £597pcm. I get paid £503pm, dh is currently unemployed.

We get Tax Credit that will now go down because dh is not working, we cannot get council tax benefit and I don't think we are entitled to housing benefit. So what dh gets as Jobseekers Allowance and our Tax Credits just pay the bills.

What a life eh?

Still, who'd want to own their own house? At least this way if we can't pay we can just move out and not risk repossession! Looking on the bright side that is!

We are just in the process of buying again, so soon will have 22 years to pay We have been renting for a couple of years while renting out our property in London. I think there is a different feeling to being in your own home, even if in some ways its a bit nebulous i.e you don't really owm it for years and years.
I just wouldn't want to have to uproot the kids if the landlord suddenly gave us 2 months notice, which of course could still happen before we exchange, but it will be a relief to feel that we are paying towards our home.
Ramble Ramble.............

I'm nearly 33 and DH is 34 - we own our home outright.... perhaps we're the youngest to have cleared our mortgage?

ProfYaffle · 15/01/2007 17:34

Ours is £0. We were 'lucky' that dh got a brain tumour a couple of years ago and critical illness cover paid off the mortgage. We live in a small terrace but won't move as don't want another mortgage.

ProfYaffle · 15/01/2007 17:35

We were the same age when we paid ours off.

onlyjoking9329 · 15/01/2007 18:06

Myself and hubby had a house each when we met, he only owed 1k on his, he sold his house to his brother spent money on this house and wisely invested some, i was pensioned off 7 years ago with a back injury and the lump sum was paid off the mortgage, we now live on incapacity benefit, carers allowance, pension and the DLA we get for the kids, its one less pressure to not be worrying about the mortgage, having said that we have a modest size house and are happy with our lot.

PinkTulips · 15/01/2007 18:08

zero but the landlord is paying us a visit to talk about the unpaid rent tomorrow

cori · 15/01/2007 18:29

zero here too due to an inheritance paying off the mortgage, oyr flat is a bit too small for our needs, but as prof said dont want to take on another mortgage just yet. Also thinking about returning to australia in a couple of years, so what would be the point.

NotAnOtter · 15/01/2007 18:30

frangipan · 16/01/2007 21:23

26k mortgage, £105/month, council tax £49.00/month house valued at 115k last year.......its modest but its ours

charliecat · 16/01/2007 21:25

check this out...worth a look

itsazoohere · 18/01/2007 00:03

Just to join in the rent tangent-mine is £800 a month for 3 bedrooms.

MrsJohnCusack · 18/01/2007 00:14

I'm 32 and DH is 36 and we have no mortgage on our house (3 bedrooms), we bought outright on the profit from our cruddy London flat....

but before you all gnash your teeth at us, we did have to move to the other side of the world to do that! we threw in the towel at attempting to exist in London any more.

I know a binman in SOuth London who paid off his mortgage by the age of 30, he was the tightest man in the universe though.

lovechoc · 03/01/2010 18:53

don't have a mortgage, house is paid outright.

ln1981 · 06/01/2010 21:19

Our rent is £525 pcm for 2bed house and Concil Tax is £130. We get partial housing benefit, which pays about half our rent.

Rhubarb it might be worth checking if you are eligible for housing benefit, you might even be eligible for council tax benefit also if your dh is unemployed. My dp was made redundant nearly 3 years ago (thankfully he got a job quite quick), and we got full council tax benefit and our housing benefit went up too. You only really need to be on a low income to qualify for it, I think so it may be worth checking it out.
