May-be this time - Fledglings flutter through May 2016 (Flylady thread)

CotswoldStrife · 30/04/2016 22:25

Welcome all - and thanks to SpareCrust for leading us through April.

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chat along the way.

Link to the Flylady website

Don't let the somewhat sickly and barftastic language of the site put you off: the underlying system is sound!

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework; which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead!

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around next month again!

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with masses of bumph. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

** And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight - it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the babysteps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names!) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders!

Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings

Oh and don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t! . Some of us have been on here for years and some of us natter rather a lot – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers are very, very welcome!

I just did something scary and brave! We're having one of DD's non-home-ed friends round in half term, which we've done before, but this time I've asked if the parents want to stay for a game or two after (as I discovered a while ago that they love them too). It's scary because I don't know them very well. The mum is lovely but I am nervous - there may be an element of "these people are way too cool to hang out with us" Blush. OTOH she did say once that she loved how down to earth we are (the area we both live in, which they only moved to last year, has quite the reputation for being snobby!). :o

So what with the home ed inspection thing looming, we now have double the reason to tidy the heck out of this house. :o

DH and I have agreed that once the DCs are in bed we're going to write a list of all the stuff we need to get done before we go away on June 1st. I have a feeling it will be a long and depressing list.

Cagliostro · 13/05/2016 22:27

We kind of ended up watching anime instead of writing the list! But I've just done it now (can't sleep) and oh good grief is it a long long list :(

CotswoldStrife · 14/05/2016 00:05

Fab day out but shattered, will post the links tomorrow - sorry!

Good evening all, hope you are having lovely weekend.

Cag - sounds like a great opportunity to make new friends for the grown ups too! Good luck with the inspection.

Fab decluttering Knitting

Put your feet up SC (so they don't drop off Wink )

Well, if anyone would like to indulge in some property porn, you might like to click here We have fallen in love with this and have made an offer. Our house goes on the market on Monday. Eek!!

BlueEyeshadow · 14/05/2016 19:06

We've been painting DS2's bedroom this afternoon. DH cleared it while I did the swimming run and grocery shopping this morning. Annoyingly, didn't have quite enough paint so will have to get more and finish off all the detailed bits tomorrow. Knackered now, and really looking forward to a takeaway and Eurovision this evening, although sadly the friend who was coming over to enjoy the madness with us now can't.

Oh, and did have to do hoovering because a plastic dustsheet disintegrated everywhere, so that's flying too!

Body clutter - lost 2lbs last week despite birthday celebrations. :) Have joined the local gym as I think it's exercise that really makes the final bit of difference.

Wow, Grey, that's gorgeous - fingers well and truly crossed for you!

Cagliostro · 14/05/2016 19:06

Right I've bitten the bullet and offered maths classes at my house.

What have I done! [tremble]

Actually scared now. Looking round and surveying the mess.

Managed very little of my to do list as well. Went to a science fair thing which was fab, but I ache like hell now :(

CotswoldStrife · 14/05/2016 21:23

That is gorgeous Grey, good luck with the sale/purchase. Are the current owners Welsh by any chance (looking at that lovely mosaic)?

Cag, well done for offering to have the classes at your house.

I had a lovely day yesterday and really enjoyed it. Today not so good. Going to have an early night and grab a grip.

Wow Grey I missed that link! Utterly gorgeous. Flylady meet up at yours then yeah? :o Wine

Not much done this evening. Pretty much written the day off, hopefully tomorrow will be better. Thankfully the DCs were really good at bedtime. I have watched a foreign movie (I wanted to make the most of the free DVD rentals as they'll stop when my notice ends - but had put off watching this one as anything with subtitles takes more effort!), DH should be home soon. S'pose we will watch the Eurovision scores coming in. With a can of pre-mixed Archers. Classy. :o

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 14/05/2016 23:08

ta da
sunburn my face.

Currently watching Eurovision and wondering what happened to the political alliances that used to dominate. Also do I have to assume that the comedy routines that are so much fun got rid of during the prelims?
Just not the same with the commentary though. Only 1 announcer, sorry Mr Norton.

SpareCrust · 15/05/2016 12:06

Cor blimey Grey I dream of houses like that nightly! Love the beams and the flagstones, and the garden, and the view from the garden!

Yes I heard tell of a live wolf performing at Eurovision but after a long day at ballet rehearsals I'm afraid I fell asleep before I could find out. Didn't think Belgium's entry was too bad though.

Anyway, just came on to say, psstt, dd has a friend here and it's a boy! Don't know why this should be so unusual but it's just dd hasn't had a friend who was a boy since she was four. I was expecting a huge lad to appear on the doorstep but he is v small in stature and blonde and cherubic Smile

Not feeling too great today - this time it is stomach - mechanical nowt infectious. Honestly, if its not one thing its another. I am so sick of feeling ill all the time. Need to lose weight and get fit!

Enjoy your Sundays everyone!

Dh is making us very popular with the neighbours and producing plumes of barbecue smoke Blush. Will have to go and sort him out... .

SpareCrust · 15/05/2016 12:10

Forgot to thanks Cotswold for links (glad you had good day yesterday)

Blue congrats on body clutter loss! (I am losing too but at a snail's pace) and well done re: the painting

Hope you feel more rested today Cag just take the tidying one bit at a time one day at a time and don't stress x

Big wing flaps to all other fledglings!

UntidyAn0n · 15/05/2016 12:57

Hi. I would like to join you and attempt to keep up. Two under 5, work and a horder DH

I followed fly lady pre DC and even had a Control Journal Blushparts of the routine have stuck with me so I'm looking forward to getting back into it. Replacing the control journal with my Bullet Journal Wink

We've had a sick week here so spent yesterday bleaching door handles etc, but no real tidying. Laundry mountain doubled its usual size!

Moving in May is a good place for me to start!

I had a realisation that the shiny sink effect really needs to extend to the dishwasher for it to work for me. An empty dishwasher gets me moving in the same way a shiny sink did pre dishwasher.

So my list for today...
At least one laundry in
Laundry dry
Laundry Away
Tidy breakfast mess
Declutter living room toys
Sort fridge in prep for food shop arriving
Tescos shop away
Dinner cooked
Load dishwasher
Wipe kitchen surfaces
Shine sink
Sweep kitchen
Tidy living room after kids in bed
Hoover living room

SpareCrust · 15/05/2016 14:04

A very warm welcome to UntidyAn0n ! Looking after sick dc definitely counts as Flying in my books; as does prepping for a house move! So agree with you about the dishwasher effect. (Mine would be the first thing I would grab in a fire (after dd, dh and the pets!). Good luck with your list! And hope you can persuade your dh to declutter a wee bit before the move.

UntidyAn0n · 15/05/2016 14:22

Hi Spare. Thanks for your welcome..

I'm not moving houseBlush I meant the flylady monthly habit. 'Moving in May' Grin

SpareCrust · 15/05/2016 14:51

Oh, of course, sorry Blush!! Shows how closely I am following things currently Blush and how decrepit I am atm.!! I really should be developing that habit though!!

CotswoldStrife · 15/05/2016 14:52

Welcome UntidyAn0n, good to have you with us.

I have not achieved much so far, but DD is out for an hour so that may well be the sum total of success if I do some work while she is absent Grin

DH has built another bit of furniture today which has suffered a scratch across the top so we are getting there. I have found a bit more clothing. The line is full of laundry on this lovely day. I am going to take a few minutes to plan for the week and eat chocolate brownies with iced coffee and put the tea on soon. Enjoying the peace and quiet of the weekend for an hour or two. In fact, I should empty my dishwasher which I ran earlier!

liverdoc · 15/05/2016 14:54

Hello all
I would like to join too
I lurk on the fly lady website, but it looks too barftastic.
So then I lurk here instead.
I have an verging on the anally tidy husband, a teenage boy, two dogs, three cats
I hoard like nobody's business, work stupid hours, and have too many external commitments
Will you make fly lady simple?
I have just produced my 35 year old first year biology schoolbook for the revising child
I am using this as justification for the fact that hoarding is useful but actually...
I haven't seen the carpet on my side of the bed for some years.
Help!

Cagliostro · 15/05/2016 15:24

Hello and welcome to the newbies :) this is a lovely lovely thread.

I've not kept up at all this month Blush

Pain is even worse today, DS is happy just chilling out with me on the sofa and DD made lunch before playing out. All I've actually done today is add to my to do list!

I did get a(nother) new notebook in the post yesterday, couldn't resist it on ebay. Maybe it should be my control journal? I've never actually tried making one.

Cagliostro · 15/05/2016 15:25

Oh and a big YES to the 'not seeing the carpet' issue... Blush

liverdoc · 15/05/2016 17:37

I believe it used to be a sort of porridge colour but who knows?

BlueEyeshadow · 15/05/2016 22:29

Ta da!
Church
Bought more paint
Collected DS1 swimming trunks
Finished painting DS2's room (with DH)
Gardening (while DH did the bits I can't reach!)
Cooked chicken dinner
Put away random bits
Tidied/cleaned kitchen

Still need to finish putting laundry away
Will need to move DS2 back into his room, order him some new bookcases, swap curtains around and do a massive toy cull over the next week.

Waves to new people.

Einstein / SC - re Eurovision, [geek alert] yes a lot of the weirder bits didn't get through to the final. There was a naked Legolas lookalike singing with a hologram wolf, but you had to watch the semis to see that. Also the bodypopping spaceman. Sweden did a hilarious spoof Eurovision mash-up song in the interval though. And there's plenty of room for conspiracy theories in the discrepancies between public and jury votes now they're split out... [/geek alert]

CotswoldStrife · 15/05/2016 23:43

Welcome liverdoc, good to have you with us.

The carpet in my bedroom really needs to be hidden by a floordrobe. But since we've installed the fitted wardrobes, there is no room to put anything on the floor (as the doors won't open) so that's going to be a new discipline for me!

Kitchen zone next week. Much needed here. Well, all zone work is needed really, I seem to think that posting the links either does the work all by itself or gives me the right to avoid it, bwahahah!

Better get the links sorted - back shortly!

CotswoldStrife · 15/05/2016 23:53

Sorry, in case I have confused anyone I'd like to point out that the official zone for next week is the bathroom (zone 3). Despite being at the end of the kitchen zone, mine is in need of hard labour! I will be ignoring doing the bathroom too Blush

The daily summary for Monday - also available at flight plan which should update automatically each day.
