Do the following. Just want to see am I very slow or is the householder expecting to much.

I sorted then ironed

10 men's shirts, (shirts had to be unbuttoned, then ironed, then rebuttoned and folded, not hung)
6 dresses,
9 kids trousers,
14 kids tops/jumpers,
7 Babygro's
7 adults trousers,
6 mens t-shirts,
8 blouses/tops,
3 jumpers.

Rest of laundry sorted and folded (duvets and sheets)

How long would it take you???

All that in 4 hours!!! Ridiculous that they even considered you can do that. I reckon 3 hours for ironing and sorting the laundry too. I think you achieved a lot in that time. Just think, if that is their attitude do you really want to work for them?

Sonnet · 12/02/2016 18:14

Impressed with a hour Sparklycat
I take on average 2 mins per garment. Bit rounded it up to cover sorting and folding bedding etc

Sparklycat · 12/02/2016 18:16

I whizz through ironing, it's a rubbish skill ha

joeythenutter · 12/02/2016 18:22

Sparklycat you might whizz through it, but is it done really well, no creases anywhere?? I could whizz through it too but it would be roughly done. Like to do a thorough job.

45mins for the 10 shirts alone!!

In a 4hour clean this is what I get from my cleaner:
3 bedrooms hoovered,
our bedroom dusted (other 2 are spared and I don't care that often).
3 sets of stairs hoovered.
Large bathroom with walk in shower and freestanding bath cleaned and mopped.
Kitchen and downstairs toilet cleaned and mopped.
Hallway, living room and dining area mopped and hoovered (wood floor)
Sofa hoovered (pesky dogs)
Living room and dining area polished.
Woodwork on stairs wiped over

There's normally time for her to do some extra bits - put clean bedding on or empty the dishwasher. Depends on how much of a mini clean I've had inbetween Blushif I have at all

OzzieFem · 12/02/2016 18:48

Sparklycat - So you can iron 70 items in a hour, that includes unbuttoning 10 shirts, rebuttoning them after ironing, then folding. Sounds like a big fat porky to me.

I hate ironing, that lot would take me at least 4 hours.

umizoomi · 12/02/2016 18:53

My cleaner does 3 hours and we have 11 rooms if you count hall/stairs and landing as one - that includes 4 bathrooms/shower rooms/loo.

The ironing pile alone would take me about 2 hours at least.

He sounds nuts - who folds shirts???!! And irons babygros but not PJ's?!? Hmm

OzzieFem · 12/02/2016 18:54

Forgot to mention that did not include the sorting and folding. Frankly joeythenutter I would tell them to get lost. They don't want a domestic they want a slave!

Longdistance · 12/02/2016 18:56

Life's too short for ironing.

Have a 🍷

Lweji · 12/02/2016 18:56

I'd probably need a whole week for the ironing and cleaning.

OK, at least one whole day.

Lweji · 12/02/2016 18:58

Mine does 4 hours for much less ironing (7 or so boys t-shirts) and 7 rooms.

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 12/02/2016 19:00

Fucking hell!

Our cleaner does 5 hours a week. She spends about 1.5 hours ironing two sets of super King sheets and the odd blouse/2 year old's dress. She also folds about two - three loads of washing and puts it away. The rest of the time is spent changing two beds and two cots, we have 14 rooms for her to do (excluding the hall which probably counts as 2 as the house is on 4 levels). If I have her that amount of ironing, I'd expect her to maybe clean 1 bathroom and a bit of light vacuuming!

SmallGreenBouncyBall · 12/02/2016 19:02

no time at all. 'cos I don't do ironing apart from hama beads and my linon skirt that I wear once a year
strategic drying and jersy fabrics all the way.

Want2bSupermum · 12/02/2016 19:42

I don't unbutton shirts when I iron. DH is far enough that his shirts are wide so I iron the front and back around the buttons. Makes folding them easier too. What's better is that my laundry place charges $1.25 to wash and iron a shirt. I send them out if I am busy.

Nicknamegrief · 12/02/2016 20:03

Surely it depends on the iron and board too. I have a steam generator iron and it halved my ironing time. It takes me about half an hour to do a load of washing now.

Cressandra · 12/02/2016 20:32

i make that 72 items. Seriously, point this out and mention the buttons and refolding. I don't think you've done badly.

However, babygrows ironed?! I'd be tempted to walk tbh.

Lweji · 12/02/2016 20:40

If he asks you back and expects more, tell him to show you how fast he can iron those shirts and clean a room properly. Then tell him how long you think you need for the whole thing.

BlimeyCrikey · 12/02/2016 20:42

Unreal. This is shocking, who can do all of that well then clean 13 rooms, all in 4 hours? Utterly unreasonable request.

ouryve · 12/02/2016 20:45

A whole bloody day.

Make that a week.

Dodgy neck and shoulders and low boredom threshold.

ouryve · 12/02/2016 20:47

Has the owner ever done all that much ironing and sorting and cleaned the house in 4 hours, btw, or did they expect you to stick a broom up your arse while stood at the ironing board?

TheExMotherInLaw · 12/02/2016 21:31

That lot would take me 4 or 5 hours. He's a pillock who probably has never used an iron.

itsmeagain1 · 12/02/2016 21:44

I'd say if doing it really well, maybe 3 hours.

My wonderful cleaner that I really need to get back used to do 3.5-4 hours and in that time she did 2 loads of washing, tumbled one and put it away, left the second one drying. She changed the beds on rotation (3 in use so at least one a week, usually 2). She vaccumed and washed 2 flights of steps, hall, landing, sitting room, kitchen, 2 bathrooms, 2 bedrooms.
General dusting and wiping down surfaces/ glass/ cupboards. Often found time to do an extra task like scrubbing the grill pan, wiping out the fridge etc.
She shook and folded everything from the dryer so it didn't usually need ironing.
God I miss her (searches frantically for her number).

DramaAlpaca · 12/02/2016 21:59

I detest ironing & do as little as possible, but I reckon that lot would take me between 2 & 3 hours. Longer, if I had to do all that unbuttoning & buttoning.

99WithAFlakePlease · 12/02/2016 22:24

I reckon that ironing would take me 3 - 3 1/2 hours.

Our house takes me about 4 hours to clean (4 bed semi).

I would ask them when they last cleaned their house and did their ironing and timed themselves and encourage them to give it a go soon to see how unreasonable they've been.

SquidgeyMidgey · 12/02/2016 22:34

Including all the folding probably about 3 hours but I'm fast and I have a killer iron. They sound completely unrealistic, do you need that work?
