Good tip, Clarence! Thanks!

BiscuitTinClarabel · 25/03/2016 02:25

Am with your daughter on Bagpuss ScottishBiscuit - ds's my singing Bagpuss mouse brings muchest joy!

Rolled out the kondoing to work - kondo'd my desk today and immediately felt more in control.

DH has been inspired to join in and done two kitchen cupboards and some clothes too stubborn to listen to the proper method but it'll do.

stiffstink · 25/03/2016 03:14

The house very briefly slipped into chaos this week but I managed to tidy 6 rooms (I will include the porch in that tally) in under an hour yesterday.

I didn't have time to Kondo DS's toys properly but I got rid of half a bin bag of broken bits which do not bring joy. I'm hoping to get some furniture out of the loft today so that it can go to charity or be given away on FB. I was thinking about offering my DSis the double bed we are storing in the loft but she mentioned yesterday that she was buying bedding for a double bed we gave her out of our loft last year during Kondo round 1! I'd forgotten that we started off with 3 double beds in our 3 bed house, two of which were being kept "in case we extend!"

I'm collecting paperwork to go through that again. There's an awful lot of it.

First outfit sold on EBay! Got £42 for a designer dress that no longer fits, so I'm happy with that.

Any recommendations on companies/apps to use for getting rid of CDs/DVDs? I'm sorting through my CDs tonight and burning them all on to my laptop.

Babieseverywhere · 26/03/2016 10:41

Still not had time to actual read the Kondo Book, too busy with the kids over Easter.
But I wanted to get ready for my post Easter clear out.

Q1. Are those magic folding clothes boards worth buying (aka Big bang) ?
I ask, as I have 6 people's clothes to fold weekly !

Q2. Are shoe boxes the best thing to store clothes in drawers and cupboards ? Or any other suggestions of cheap alternatives ?

CaveMum · 26/03/2016 11:14

The Kondo method of folding probably doesn't work with those boards, but I'm not 100% sure. Can you not teach your kids how to do their own folding, age permitting?

Shoe boxes would work. I bought one of the large decorative boxes from TK Maxx to put scarves and pashminas in. It cost about £10.

HerdofAntilop · 27/03/2016 18:23

I am currently using cereal boxes to go in drawers as we don't have any shoe boxes. My large cornflakes boxes make two nice sized holders for lots of things and the smaller ones are good for pants and socks. If you sellotape up the flaps one box cut in half makes two smaller containers to go in the drawer. Still considering upgrading them when I've finished the whole process but these are freeish and will do for now.

Nishky · 27/03/2016 19:53

I have just done the kids playroom. Hours. It has taken hours. But it is lovely. Three bags of rubbish. Recycling bin overflowing with old magazines etc. 5 bags and a drawer unit ready to go to the charity shop.

It feels good though.

GrubbyWindows · 27/03/2016 20:47

Oooh nishky - actual furniture out the door! That's the dream!

Nishky · 27/03/2016 22:41

Oh yes. Can't wait to start on the rest of the house now!

NotCitrus · 27/03/2016 23:02

Got distracted by emptying someone else's flat so at least their place is ready to be rented out (and I didn't need to do food shopping for a week!)
So all I've done this month is three shredder-fuls of bank statements, and now the plastic box collection. And, amazingly, a bag of dd's toys - I told her as she hadn't picked them up, they were going in the bin if she didn't help me put any any she wanted to keep. Bye bye loads of shit from magazines, and lots of blocks and beads. The charity shop got 5 bags a fortnight ago and another sack is full for them.

BogeyNights · 28/03/2016 18:08

Hi I am planning to embark on a Konmari lifestyle!
I've read about it on MN and other places online, but would you recommend as the first book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying - or the illustrated Spark Joy ??
xx

mrsgordonfreeman · 28/03/2016 18:21

I have been Kondo-ing my own stuff, and have been drawn into doing Mil's as well. She has a large house & stores some of her son's stuff - he is married and lives in the US and yes, I know what Kondo says about that! However, I organised his stuff vertically, by theme, and whittled it down from a whole room to a couple of large boxes.
Just one thing... I found a large duffle bag full of his dirty magazines. Now, would those be classed as komono, papers, books or sentimental items?

mrsgordonfreeman · 28/03/2016 18:24

Here are my before & afters at MIL's house.

Stalled a bit on the kondo front; mainly because I've reached the point where it is time to tackle paperwork. This is mainly dh's domain so I feel like I'm invading his turf a bit. There are still things I can take responsibility for though. Dh has some pretty good systems actually so perhaps there won't be too much to chuck. I also want to do photos over the next couple of weeks which I am sure will be hard. We have a thing which converts old prints into digital images so I think I'll be putting that to good use.

HaveAWeeNap · 28/03/2016 19:59

MrsGordon where's the other photo? I love before and afters

CaveMum · 28/03/2016 20:13

After some nagging we did DH's clothes yesterday: EIGHT large bin bags for charity! Books are next in the list, I know it'll be a hard one but we've got far too many of the critters!

mrsgordonfreeman · 28/03/2016 21:51

There's a 'before'!

mrsgordonfreeman · 28/03/2016 21:58

Some more here. Why is tidying other's stuff so much more satisfying than one's own? I mean, I've really loved Kondo-ing my house, but I honestly have had the best time clearing up MIL's.

Mrsgordon- but how are you managing to kondo someone else's belongings? Surely you can't?

StitchesInTime · 29/03/2016 07:15

I was wondering that. How do you know which items spark joy for someone else?

HaveAWeeNap · 29/03/2016 08:31

Thanks MrsGordon!
Love, love, love those.

redhat · 29/03/2016 08:38

I've been dabbling with this for a a few weeks having read the book and been inspired but today is the first real day of the school holidays here (Easter weekend didn't count since we were away) and I am determined to get cracking properly. I am putting the DC on the case with their stuff. To encourage them though I am going to let them eBay their old toys. I know it isn't strictly allowed but they have a lot of stuff and much of it was expensive. Has anyone found that selling the stuff has made the process stall?

mrsgordonfreeman · 29/03/2016 10:04

No, of course not, we've tried that before and it just ends in arguments. I have been sorting into category for MIL to then discard. She has huge quantities of newspaper and "important papers" which nobody else can begin to understand, so those are being accumulated in one place for her to sort when the rest is completed. She says none of her clothes spark joy, the best she can muster is a slight shrug.
She has found that once she began tidying and discarding, FIL began to do the same, and has made really good progress on his papers too. They're both lawyers so piles of paper are their safety blankets.
