Just noticed the old thread was full, so hope no one minds me starting the new one

Clarence for me it's the Boden t-shirts. I bought one, and it was useful, so I bought more, then some with long sleeves too, then more and more and more until...I had a wardrobe full of tops that are okay to slop around in with jeans, but nothing that excited me in the least.

I've now got a fairly small range of tops (some Boden Wink) which I bought because I liked how they looked on me. And some Boden tshirts which I couldn't quite bring myself to ditch because they're useful for work.

I definitely think it will change the way I shop for clothes.

I hate clothes shopping. I am of the 'that will do brigade' and buy 2 or 3 things at the same time.

Now that my 4 hanging rails are reduced to just 1, I am determined to be more discerning.

Mercedes519 · 20/02/2016 15:51

Am a new convert. I have just done sheets and towels as a quick category before I start on clothes. I have three bin bags full of old towels and duplicate sheets - the kids do not need six sets of bedding.

Not quite full KonMari though? I'm not sure my sheets spark joy but I like having them i.e. I want them for a comfortable bed. I've just thought about that as I wrote it and realised I love the feeling of getting into a clean bed.

There is the joy 😀

LadyMacnet · 21/02/2016 09:58

Is there a list of sub categories for komono anywhere?

I've been reading The Life Changing Magic of Tidying again this weekend. It has been really useful to revisit it as it has made me realise where some of my kondo approaches have't been so successful. I don't think I'll be sending a text to my old mobile to say goodbye and thank it for its service though!

I've only managed to kondo the top of the chest of drawers this week but what a difference that has made when I go into the bedroom now! I even thanked the four Best TA ever keyrings that were nestling in a dish and sent them to the charity shop. Loved the kids who gave them to me but don't need them. Best of all, DH then did his side too! Joy, joy, joy!

LadyMacnet · 21/02/2016 12:24

Thank you Nan0second Thanksthat's a really helpful list.

woodcabernet · 21/02/2016 13:22

Hello!

I'm about to embark on a Kondo tidying spree. Does anyone have experience of tidying the following. I'm a bit nervous about it.

DVDs: I think I'll discard them all. Has anyone done this and regretted it? Films spark joy but I can watch everything online. DVDs themselves don't spark joy.

CDs: music sparks joy, CDs don't. I use Spotify and can get almost any music I want at any time. But I have thousands of pounds worth Shock of CDs and am nervous about discarding them. What if one day there is no internet and I need them again?!

Old photo albums: they don't all really spark joy. Discard whole albums or remove individual photos? Again anyone regret discarding?

My art: this is the hardest one I think. I have paintings and drawings I did 20 years ago. I don't want to hang them on the walls but neither do I want to discard them. They spark joy but they're a pain to store. Over the last 20 years they've moved from wardrobe to cupboard to leaning against a wall to another cupboard. They are fairly large and my new home has hardly any storage and I'm loathe to buy any. Any ideas about these please? Thank you Smile

Zippidydoodah · 21/02/2016 14:12

Re: art, mine is under a double divan bed at my parents' house, but let's gloss over that one!! 😄

LadyMacnet · 21/02/2016 14:15

Woodcabernet I would have no hesitation in disposing of the DVDs and CDs - they are old tech as you say. I expect there might be somewhere online or ebay that would give you £ for them. I think the MK philosophy is that they have served their main value though in that they once gave you joy but no longer have value.

Could you take photos of your art before kondoing it?

StuntNun · 21/02/2016 16:12

Wood if you need to keep the CDs you could put them into a CD folder and ditch the cases, that way they would take up a lot less space.

woodcabernet · 21/02/2016 17:33

They're already in folder things. I have several and they're big and heavy! I think I'll just ditch them

I was thinking about photographing the art, or scanning it if I can find somewhere with a big scanner. I thought then maybe I could get smaller 'prints' made of them which I could then display... This must be a thing mustn't it - paintings get made into prints all the time?

I need my divan bed drawers for sheets and towels! Grin

TheWitchsCat · 21/02/2016 19:33

Get the ziffit app. I've just sent of a load of books and they're hopefully gonna give me 90£ for them!

NotCitrus · 21/02/2016 19:48

Well I've started Paperwork...
Decided to do bank statements on the grounds that I thought I'd got rid of most of them.Have now got rid of all current account ones before 2013 (mid 2014 went paperless), savings accounts and credit card statements more than 7 years old, all mobile phone stuff for DP except one bill (in case he needs to look up phone numbers) and current contract info, and allthe papers from some shares that are now sold - though the dividend letters said on them to keep for 7 years so have got those and the letters confirming the sale.

So that's half a recycling bag plus a shredder-full gone. And I'm trying to get all my P45s and P60s and payslips together for Kondoing...

woodcabernet · 21/02/2016 20:19

Ziffit looks good but relies on barcodes which I don't have sadly.

Might use it for books though, thanks Smile

LadyMacnet · 21/02/2016 20:45

NotCitrus I think I read on a link to MSE / Martin Lewis website that says keep P60s for 7 years...

stumblymonkey · 21/02/2016 21:27

Wow...lots of posts in the last week!

I have Kondo'd books. Got another £70 worth to send to Ziffit.

I've also continued ebaying and have made about £600 so far. Still more to do!

Otherwise I did my paperwork....I wasn't expecting to get rid of much as I'm pretty ruthless with it, do everything paperless where there's an option to and only have one file....still managed to half fill a recycling bag!

I also did toiletries today while I was cleaning the bathroom.

So upstairs is almost done apart from 'sentimental'. I'll also go through Komono but have been doing a lot of that as I go....I'm so used to Kondo'ing now that as soon as something catches my eye in the house and I think 'humph...no joy' I whip it straight into the 'sell' pile!

Doilooklikeatourist · 21/02/2016 22:01

Ive got the Spark Joy book , and relied on youtube videos and have done most of my chest of drawers
Just the 3 mini drawers of komono left to do
Then onto my wardrobe , the problem is I hate most of my clothes , so will have to keep the ones i dislike least
I love my colour organised T shirt drawer though

stumblymonkey · 22/02/2016 06:29

Wood...

Is this the sort of company you need to turn your artwork to prints?

I am somewhat astonished to report that the notion not kondo-ing other family members stuff, because they'll be inspired by your own kondo-ing, seems to actually be working!

I've kondo-ed my books, my clothes, the DC's clothes (on the grounds that they're too young to do it themselves anyway), and have started on papers.

Yesterday, DH, entirely unprompted, cleared a load of his hobby stuff out of the kitchen (mostly into the garage, but at least it's out from under my feet), and produced 2 carrier bags full of his old university textbooks for me to take to the charity shop.

For context, just a few weeks ago, DH was telling me off for throwing out empty yoghurt pots because "we might need them for something". DH actively charity shopping his old books is a major step forward Grin

iwantavuvezela · 22/02/2016 12:55

Stichesintime, its good to hear that. I asked my DH and DD to choose some mugs to go - I said lets just keep enough to fit comfortably in the space that we have. After about 10 minutes fierce deliberation they both allowed me to take out ONE chipped mug!

So I realize I need to work on my own stuff, spaces I use and not involve them in household clearing, then hopefully they will like your DH start to clear.
The difference between his and her sides of our bathroom has become quite marked, as well as our bedside tables!

Zippidydoodah · 22/02/2016 15:23

Gosh, stumbly, do you mind if I adm what you've sold to get £600 on eBay?! I've still got piles and likes of stuff that I've never got round to listing....Marie kondo would say bin them, but we need the money!

Re: divan bed, the art fits in the gap between bed and floor (not a huge gap). We haven't got that type of bed here, so maybe it all has to stay at my parents'.....bad girl! Grin

SisterMoonshine · 22/02/2016 17:41

I know I'm late to the party, but can I join?

I haven't even been lurking - I've noticed these threads and done my best to ignore you all because I've known it's something I should be doing.
But having spent this weekend reading nearly all the threads and enjoying the youtube videos and links on folding, I'm now waiting for the book to arrive and in the meantime I've done mine and the DC's clothes and I'm now sitting under empty shelves where my books used to be. And I'm all dusty. I'm about halfway through books (still got DC's books and recipe books to do, but that will have to be later in the week).

I can't wait to get reading and get into the process properly.
Isn't Marie Kondo sweet? All serene. Just from knowing you were all declutterring I was expecting a bossy boots (Kim/Aggie sort of character).

And yes! All the family are doing it too, without any prompting from me. Actually, I think they've been waiting for this :)
DD returned some socks to her draw and I went and peeped and they are exactly where they should be. DH has been sorting his clothes, wires, leads etc.
I am loving the. tidy clothes. I included bags and towels and bedding in that category and did my handbag (might be wrong, but I'm happy).

And it's not been so horrible. I feel really positive about it, even when I'm actually sorting. It is like a weight lifting.

It's a good time of year to be doing it I think. We'll be into the nicer weather soon and it'll be nice to have visitors to a tidy house.

stumblymonkey · 22/02/2016 17:53

Zippidy...

I've ebayed clothes, shoes, a broken iPad, a working but old iPad, ties, handbags.

I've got a lot of clothes that are Coast, Phase Eight, Monsoon, Mint Velvet which usually sell for about £10-15 per dress. Had one Mint Velvet top which went for £38!

DP has sold a few Hugo Boss ties (£5-6) and shirts (£2.50-£10). Broken iPad got £78. A fountain pen gift he'd never used and we didn't know was worth anything much got another £80.

Sold a few pairs of hardly worn shoes/boots for £3-£30.

It's not included in the £600 but I've also made about £200 selling books/DVDs to Ziffit.
