I've just found out about this fab way of organising your life, thanks to a kind poster on the 'people who are efficient ' thread. I was wondering if any other MNers are Bullet Journalers? here is the website if anyone's interested.

It's only a couple of days since I started my journal, but I can already see that it's going to revolutionise my ability to be organised. I've tried loads of apps, lists etc in the past, but have never really hit on a system that worked for me. I have very high hopes of this one though (plus it involves pretty stationery Smile )!

Another thing I really love is that there will be no gaps, eg if it's a Sunday and you have nothing on your to do list, Sunday's space won't be blank, you just wouldn't create Sunday's space in the first place. Blank spaces make me twitch and I feel like I have to write something in!!

mercifulTehlu · 05/02/2016 13:14

Oooh - great idea to have a clothes page! I wonder if what I need before a 'clothes I need but can't afford page' is a list of my clothes and which ones go well together as outfits. I'm sure I under-use a lot of my clothes because I get used to wearing the same ones in the same combinations, when there are probably lots of other combos I'm not thinking of... And now I have re-Kondoed (see Kondo thread) my clothes, it will be a whole lot easier to see what's what.

Grin Grin Grin at frenzied BuJo maniac! I feel that could become some kind of catchphrase...

Ok - I have to go and do some actual work now, but will muse upon the clothes thing later!

Have a good afternoon, fellow frenzied and not-so-frenzied BuJo maniacs...

I've split my weeks into 6 days. M-f and then a box for sat and sun. This way I just have a "weekend" to fill not two days. If you see what i mean.

HemanOrSheRa · 05/02/2016 13:33

Annie we are given a week per view diary in work as we are community based and only have computer access when we (hopefully) get to the office. But they just don't work for me at all. I'm amazed it's only taken 25+ years to work out why! I've had a lightbulb moment.

I've ordered a midori travelers notebook and a couple of extra refills - grid marked paper and a 14 month 'free' diary. My plan is to put the month insert into the back, clip it off and fill it out with bullets as I go. Then I'm going to play around with the other pages. This is where I think the bullet journal will help me. I'm going to go with a double page week layout first and move tasks etc over from the month page. Then if I have an exceptionally busy day or month I can start a fresh, separate page. As long as I add everything to the index I should be OK. And if it doesn't work I CAN CHANGE IT! This BuJo thing is bloody genius!

MyVisionsComeFromSoup · 05/02/2016 14:08

what I'm finding the most useful is the coding of items - a To Do get a dot with a cross when it's completed or a > if moving it on to the next day; notes get a dash, so I know they don't have a To Do, that kind of thing. Plus a neat ruled day and date, and i can see where i'm at all the time Smile.

It's carried over to work as well, my work notebook which is a big mess of task, notes and extra pieces of paper, has started to get coded lists, without me even noticing Shock.

My leather and cord has been dispatched, should be here by Tuesday, plus I have some inserts arriving at some point (Amazon was particularly unhelpful as to an actual date). Trouble is, I'm out on Tuesday, which means DH will be opening the post, and I haven't quite explained how vital to my life a fake midori bullet journal is going to be Blush. And we're not supposed to be spending money on non-essentials, and i already have a notebook Sad. Maybe the postman will be efficient and deliver on Monday though.

BYOSnowman · 05/02/2016 14:21

I don't like the cross over the to do dot. I like to do a nice by line through the sentence!

WhoisLucasHood · 05/02/2016 14:30

My collections I've just set up:
House improvements/ purchases
Reference no's
Web info
Holiday - to do and to buy
Expiry dates for passports, driving licences

LisaMumsnet · 05/02/2016 17:11

OMG, what a fabulous, fabulous idea! If, like me, you love lists and often have several running simultaneously in different places, you are going to love the Bullet Journal. The video where the woman uses a journal with square boxes on the pages rather than lines is also a genius idea as you can half colour in the boxes once you've commenced a task. It neatens up list-making and I can't wait to rush out and buy one.

mercifulTehlu · 05/02/2016 17:49

Indeed, LisaMumsnet - and the other benefit of the squares, as some clever person pointed out upthread, is that you can turn the notebook sideways for some of your pages and use it landscape if that works better for a particular list/chart/whatever. Genius!

BendydickCuminsnatch · 05/02/2016 18:19

I have run out of space in my box for today! So I'm not going to bother with boxes, so restrictive! Previously it would have stressed me out that now all my pages won't match, but as its sort of scrapbooky and fluid and stuff I am embracing it! I do feel like things need some kind of border though. Maybe I can do it at the end of the day when my list is complete.

StarlightMcKenzee · 05/02/2016 18:39

OMG, I thought I was reasonably bright but I could not follow any of that video!!!

I'm not organised though. Perhaps if I was and practised I might have understood it!?

Jux · 05/02/2016 18:57

This looks quite good.

I used to carry my life around in a straightforward spital bound reporters notedbook. Basically, I would just write down anything and everything as and when it came up/happened, all higgledy-piggledy, but remembered what it "looked like" and which part of the page I wrote it down on, and what sort of pen I'd used etc; I'd check back regularly and see what things I'd missed/not done and make mental notes. My brain worked well in those days!!

Can barely remember my own head these days so I'll give it a go.

TheDuckSaysMoo · 05/02/2016 19:07

I'm loving this idea! Thanks for starting this thread. I've just been told I'll be redundant in August and feel like I need to take charge of my life.

I bought my moleskin yesterday and have been thinking about structure all day today. I'm going to do the index, future log, month/tasks and daily log at the front and start any random lists at the back.

I found a great tip site too. I'll find the link and post it in a minute. Her tips on threading (connecting lists that are spread throughout the book) are fab.

TheDuckSaysMoo · 05/02/2016 19:11

Www.tinyrayofsunshine.com is the website I mentioned above.

TheDuckSaysMoo · 05/02/2016 19:15

...and www.tinyrayofsunshine.com/2015/12/different-types-of-threading-in-bullet.html?m=1 is the threading tip.

mercifulTehlu · 05/02/2016 19:30

(((()))) .

I'm feeling the gin fuelled Friday night BuJo love.

StarlightMcKenzee - don't worry. It's easy really. Get an A5 notebook. Make an index page at the beginning. Do a calendar page for each month, then a diary for each day. Add extra pages for any to-do lists. Log each page in your index. That's it!

Soooosie · 05/02/2016 20:30

I've just ordered a BJ. Which clips should I use to help me set up? I'm completely struggling with how drawn out the American YouTube clips are. Is there anything more concise?

HemanOrSheRa · 05/02/2016 20:46

Starlight which video did you watch? This one is good . Although that might be the one you've seen Confused. It is really simple. Really simple. Don't overthink it!

I could not wait for my midori to arrive so I visited my local (too local Blush) Staples today and have cracked on with my BuJo. I picked up a lined A5 notebook which cost about £5 and then managed to spend another £15 on other 'essentials'.

I filled out a 6 month future log, monthly page and then a page for this week. I cheated a bit as I added tasks in that I have already done this week. So immediately crossed them out Grin. It was good to see how it worked though. And I have completed several tasks today that I have been procrastinating about all week and which would have lingered on into the weekend. Good stuff!

I found that site TheDuck. I really like it. I linked to it upthread. There are examples of different weekly layouts which I found very helpful in getting my head around that you do what works for you and the way your brain works!

I completely agree Bendy. I like that you can play around with the pages to suit as long as you stick to the basic system. Plus, I will confess that I have a slight addiction to buying gorgeous (and occasionally using) scrapbooking stash on line and I do like the idea of dressing up some of the more personal pages.

PinkSpottyBear · 05/02/2016 20:51

Woohooooo another one snuggling in if I may?!

Love stationary, love lists but absolutely rubbish at following lists then end up feeling disheartened and stationary gets recycled as I buy another notebook to 'start' again.

Bought a nice notebook today to get started and have made a start but realise this first bujo is a practice really as already spotted a few ideas that don't sit right as I have started. I guess the beauty of this is its just ongoing and I can change as I go. Hoping to have found perfection by the time I start a second one - already noted either a square or dotted paper not lined (was all I could get my hands on today and I was keen to get started).

Started a healthy habit today - water! Must drink more! And hope as the bujo goes on to make more healthy changes. My big issue at the moment is housework so that's the main focus of mine right now.

So pleased I found this thread. Promised myself 2016 would be the year I get things in gear, mind, body and home - feel this is the perfect way.

LikeASoulWithoutAMind · 05/02/2016 21:02

This might a bit controversial but I use an app rather than a notebook. So it's on my phone and goes everywhere with me. But I think it works along similar lines.

The app lets me run multiple to do lists, actions can automatically recur and I can add notes (which can also be set up as a checklist) or set up a reminder.

My lists are:
Morning
School
Home
Work
Errands

I also have Holiday and Christmas lists that I hide until it's time to bring them back out. I'm wondering about adding an appointments list too. It's very flexible so you could set it up how you like.

Once a week I review my lists and allocate any outstanding tasks to days for the following week. There's a handy Focus view so I can just see what I need to do today. But without any rewriting or flipping through a book.

I've been quite ill for the past year and this has really really helped me get things back under control.

OrangeSunset · 05/02/2016 21:05

I've got a bit hooked on this, too! Been practising throughout January in an old notebook I had, then going to transfer across to my fancy new Leichttrum (sp?) when I'm happy with the set up and collections/lists.

I've included sections for memories in that month, and also if I read/hear anything interesting that I want to remember. Am hoping it'll end up as a hybrid between to-do's and a journal, and be worth keeping.

PinkFondantFancy · 05/02/2016 21:36

I might have missed the point entirely but is this not crying out to be an app rather than on paper? Would be so much quicker with a well designed app and could then share with a partner too??

BendydickCuminsnatch · 05/02/2016 21:49
ShockShockShock been watching her vids all evening... This journal gives me anxiety as there is so much going on but I also kind of want to aim for one like that! Am starting simple.

I would hate an app, I've tried many e.g. Evernote, Trello, I just get disoriented and I HATE being constantly on a screen. Especially as a lot of the tasks in my book need to be carried out on the computer/phone. Need pens and paper.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 05/02/2016 22:04

Oh. I think I need to do this. Why has it never occurred to me before that the solution to being terribly disorganised is to keep a book for writing everything down? I love notebooks, handwriting and lists, and I am continually forgetting about tasks.

How thick a notebook do you need?
