Wheelie bins - how long does it take you to fill yours?

I'm a bit puzzled by this actually. Because of where we live (down a tiny lane) we have to take our wheelie bin down to the end of the road for emptying. Because we are lazy we tend to only put it out when it's full and not before. We regularly go three weeks without putting the bin out! It's just a normal sized bin.

But I don't understand how we create so little rubbish compared to other people - quite often on bin-day we see bins with their lids bulging (the same ones every week).

Do you fill yours every week? And what takes up most of the space?

Ours is only emptied every two weeks and it is bulging by then. we have to take any excess to the tip ourselves

Our neighbour only has one bin bag a fortnight but he has one of those disposal units in their kitchen

Miaou · 14/12/2006 21:50

What kind of waste do you generate, cece? Eg what is the extra that goes to the tip?

We put ours out every week - dh says there is usually only one bag in it, occasionaly 2.

But equally our recycling boxes are full to the brim; plastic, paper, cardboard, tins and glass. Our borough also has the option of a compost bin and garden cuttings.

Lilymaid · 14/12/2006 21:53

WE have our black bin emptied every fortnight (green bin and box the other week). The black bin is generally not more than 1/3rd full. We do recycle as much as possible - but many of our neighbours (not only those with children of disposable nappy age) have overfull bins.

Miaou · 14/12/2006 21:53

I don't even recycle! Awful I know.

But I guess we don't use that much in the way of packaging perhaps.

Our bins are emptied on alternate weeks. Recycling and non-recycling. Both get filled up by the time they are due to be emptied.

My rubbish bin probably wouldn't be so full if I didn't have 2dd's that use disposable nappies .

Miaou · 14/12/2006 21:55

Ah that's true, I've got washables so that must make quite a difference I guess.

I have a lo in nappies and now go four weeks before putting it out - would put it out half full every two weeks but find the neighbours fill it with their excess rubbish and that gets on my wick!

I recycle anything and choose produce with little packaging.

ballbaby · 14/12/2006 22:00

That's recycle everything

DontlookatmeImshy · 14/12/2006 22:01

Ours iscollected every week but we only put it out every 2 - 3 weeks to save lugging it around when it's not full. That includes filling it with dirty nappies and after cleaning the g-pigs out.
But then we domanage to recycle the majority of other rubbish so maybe thats why.

Miaou · 14/12/2006 22:01

oooh I remember that thread ballbaby! What a flippin' cheek

DontlookatmeImshy · 14/12/2006 22:03

oh yes bb thats another reason we don'tput it out unless full. Our neighbours bins are always overflowing and they don't even have kids.Where does it all come from?????

ballbaby · 14/12/2006 22:03

The four week thing is my solution - have also moved the bin to outside the front door so they can't get in it - spoils my home's kerb appeal but makes me feel better

hotmulledwinemama · 14/12/2006 22:05

I recycle most things (apart from the disposable nappies how come my bin gets so full?

Miaou · 14/12/2006 22:07

Do you have a lot of food packaging? That's the only thing I can think of. Apart from tins we don't seem to have much in the way of packaging in our bin.

OP posts:
hotmulledwinemama · 14/12/2006 22:09

All tins, plastics and most packaging goes in the recycling bin - can't just be the dd's not eating my lovely homecooked food!

ballbaby · 14/12/2006 22:11

Think sometimes people just buy a lot of "things" thinking it will improve their quality of life. I'm quite sad about friends that spend spend spend and have got in debt over it - most of the stuff they've got ends up in the bin hardly used to make way for new stuff. Think my friends think I'm quite stingy because I don't have the latest this that and the other but what does it really give you? Are you a demonic consumer?

cece · 14/12/2006 22:14

Our extras were from after our house move?

Tend to just fill to the brim now. Not sure why it is so full as we have another wheely bin that is for recycling. That is collected the alternate week to the rubbish. That too is always full too.

recycle; plastic, paper, card, tins but not glass. So I take htose to the dump whenever I go. Everything else goes int he rubbish bin; cooked food, (peelings etc composted) packaging that doesn't go into recycling, nappies, not sure what else?????

Where we used to live we put out one bin bag per week plus recylcing so not sure why it has increased so dramatically since we moved.

JollyOldSaintNikkielas · 14/12/2006 22:20

1-2 bags a week now
Do you chuck a lot of food? That was one of our worst things (bread/potatos )

the council only collect our "general" rubbish every other week. In between it is either the blue bin(waste paper) or brown bin (garden rubbish). Our wheelie bin usually isn't full when we put it out at the end of a fortnight. Our blue bin(paper and cardboard) usually is. So, I suppose the bulk of our rubbish is paper-related. The green bin would last even longer if the council would collect our tins; they say they can't, as we don't have a kerb (on a lane).
