I can't find the thread, but I would really like to know what you used (i.e. trap/food etc) to catch the little blighter(s). TIA

try this one

saythatagain · 12/12/2006 11:33

Thanks corrina28....it makes me feel quite ill whenever I think about it!

I only ever saw one on one occasion only (although they do say there is never "just" one mouse present) but the very next day I put traps down (for a whole week) and bought one of those plug in mouse deterrent things and I have not seen one since or any evidence of one, and didnt catch anything in the trap so I presume those plugs are a success. Either that or Mr. Mouse was just visiting and didnt like what he saw

saythatagain · 12/12/2006 14:10

Where would one buy the plug-in mouse-thing please?

PrincessPeaHead · 12/12/2006 14:23

mine laughed at the traps (ate the food, set off the traps, never got caught) so I eventually bit the bullet and put down poison.
he disappeared, never returned. no funny smells anywhere either!

corrina28 · 12/12/2006 16:08

we had one the pther week, cant work out how it got in - we live above shops. i was hysterical and to dh i was packing if he didnt get rid of it. be we eventually pulled everything out and manage to corner it, trapped it in a box and took it downstairs and let it go.

Jimjams2 · 12/12/2006 16:19

Make sure you place any traps/food right against the edge of the skirting board (no gaps). If you put it away from an edge you won't catch the mice.

NYcicles · 12/12/2006 17:27

Plug-ins are at Robert Dyas. HTH.

saythatagain · 13/12/2006 10:13

Hurrah! Caught one last night but we are assuming there isn't just the one. Snickers and a Rentokil trap - it worked a treat. I was ok about it but dh was really quite distressed....very confusing indeed!

"cant work out how it got in - we live above shops"

They climb really well and can fit through a hole the size of a pencil. They come up where pipes come through floors/walls etc.

Traps with poison. It's the only way. I got the best "take" behind the washing machine/tumble drier where all the pipework came up through the floor. The Pest control man was very impressed as apparently they don't usually take all the poison bait and this had all gone. I felt awful and terribly guilty. But the mice have gone.

dizzydo · 13/12/2006 10:53

uh oh! DD spotted another "one" in the kitchen this morning. So they havent gone. Thing is there are loads of places they could get in as our kitchen is very dilapidated and not being refurbished until the new year. Have stuffed the hole where he went this morning with wire wool. The plug can also be bought at Homebase if that's any help. Think I might have to go for the pest control man. Thanks for the tip on putting the traps up to the skirting board will try that tonight.

dizzydo · 13/12/2006 10:55

My dh thinks it is hysterical because when I go into the living room or kitchen after it has been empty I clap my hands for several seconds before entering the room in the hope it scares any visitors away. Am I alone in this? Bet I'm not

drosophila · 13/12/2006 10:57

Tried everything from Sonic Noice things, humane traps, killer trap and anything else you can think off. In the end I called in the pest controllers and they do an insurance policy for 12mths. Finally at ease in my own home!!!

dizzydo · 13/12/2006 10:59

Drosophilia (love the name) tell more. Have never heard of this. Thought the pest control man came from the council and didnt charge. This sounds just the job.

drosophila · 13/12/2006 11:08

Well the council had such a waiting list I went private. Their insurance policy costs just over £100 a year and they come and do regular inspections an leave poison. They leave a very strong poison in typical place (under stairs etc) and coem and check if they have been eaten.

They have diffenent types of poison one is a powder that they just throw below the floorboard that the mice get ontheir fur and apparently they always lick their fur so Hey Presto....

Check outa company called Homecall+. Apparently they do a cover for Gas, Electrics, Plumbing AND Pest controll. I keep meaning to switch as it is also around the £100 for all 4.

dizzydo · 13/12/2006 11:15

Thank you so much. Will give them a call.

dizzydo · 13/12/2006 12:51

ok - got mice catcher coming Saturday. Just gone into kitchen, little tiny baby mouse sitting in middle of floor. arggggggh! Didnt even run away when I clapped my hands.

JackieNoHoHo · 13/12/2006 12:57

We paid (I think) £15 extra on our house insurance for (again I think) £100 of Pest control cover, and used that the other day to get the mouse man in. Seems to have worked, though they were only in the loft this time.

dizzydo · 13/12/2006 13:02

I know I am being a complete wimp but I cannot bear the thought of going back in the kitchen (that's two spotted today in as many hours) and I have SO much to do in there. Dont even really know why I am so scared of them

Macdog · 13/12/2006 13:11

I got 'Rentokil' bait boxes in Homebase.
They are plastic with the bait in them already.
They kill mice very quickly. Usually find the mice still in the box.

Have you tried a google search for mouse killer??
They might have a local solution

dizzydo · 13/12/2006 13:21

Do you reckon one would do the trick Macdog. Where's the best place to put it, thought I might try behind the kickboards in the kitchen if I can face up to going back in there. I did google mice killer and the rentokil boxes were right up there at the top.
Thanks

drosophila · 13/12/2006 15:51

My pest guy said the poison they ar allowed to sell by law in retail outlets is a fraction of the strength the pest controller is allowed to use.

chester30 · 13/12/2006 16:31

i second mac dog's tip, have worked here too.

I've put a Rentokil box in a gap beside the cooker. I'm not sure where they're coming in, but there were droppings behind there.
I've got another one in the hall under a bookcase, because I thought I heard them out there, but none killed so far.
Mine came in a pack of 2, bought them in spring. They are still effective, had 4 dead mice so far to add to the 6 in the spring (fingers crossed that's them for time being).
I had tried the 'grain' type of killer before, but never found any bodies.
I found that the traditional traps I bought were not triggered effectively and the little buggers got the chocolate off without springing them (even when glued!)
I liked the boxes because they are sealed units, transparent so you can see if there's one in there.
Hope you get the problem sorted out soon.
