Are brabantia bins worth the money?

They seem to do all that's needed (including looking easy to clean after bin nag accidents, holding the lid open so it doesn't get mucky, etc) but I am a bit taken aback by the price! Convince me someone (or alternatively tell me they are sh*t!)

Bin bag accidents. No nagging about the bins here, oh no.

We inherited one off gp's, i think they're about £80 aren't they? It still works, but certainly doesn't look immaculate - bit rusty, and the metal has definitely gone quite dull. All fine, but not if i'd paid £80!

HeadDreamer · 05/11/2015 12:09

I've just got one last month and it's lovely.

Genx77 · 05/11/2015 12:10

Had mine 11 years, would never buy anything else, cheap bins have metal hinges that just rust away, hope to get another 11 years out of it!

HeadDreamer · 05/11/2015 12:10

And i think it's £100 for a 30L bin now. Or something similar.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 05/11/2015 12:13

Love ours, it's a pedal bin but you can leave the lid open too, I wouldn't want one of the ones you have to touch with your hand to get open. If you buy the proper liners and use them correctly you don't get bin bag accidents and then cleanliness is what you make of it, obviously. Ours has got a bit stained on the inside of the lid where people have overfilled it and put the lid down resting on the contents, but the outside is pretty immaculate still after several years

biscuitkumquat · 05/11/2015 12:15

Mine is still immaculate after around 4 years.

I bought the bags from e-bay, and never had an accident with them.

Micah · 05/11/2015 12:17

I have one with a pop lid so you press the lid lightly and it pops open. 15 years now and no complaints. Still looks reasonably new, no rust.

Also the lid catch broke a few weeks ago and I discovered you can buy all the spare bits and pieces. Cost me £3 to replace the catch, and good as new.

Kim82 · 05/11/2015 12:17

£80-£100 for a bin?! I'd cry if I had to spend that much. I bought these from Amazon a couple of months ago and they're brill. Easy to keep clean, separates the recycling and cheap!

stealthsquiggle · 05/11/2015 12:18

Yes, definitely worth it. Mostly because of the warranty. Ours has had several new catches and a complete new lid when the hinges went, over a life of about 16 years and counting.

OneHandFlapping · 05/11/2015 12:19

Mine is shit.

It went rusty with a few weeks of buying it (from Brabantia themselves, so not a knock off or anything). I thought stainless steel didn't rust.

I wish I'd stuck with a cheap plastic one.

User543212345 · 05/11/2015 12:19

We've had ours for eons. The lid broke on one of them and they replaced it FOC the courier chucked it over the fence but that's another issue so can't fault their service.

AlbusPercival · 05/11/2015 12:20

The touch close on ours has broken twice, and it is impossible to keep clean.

We replaced it with a 7 quid job from IKEA, much easier

HeadDreamer · 05/11/2015 12:20

Mine's the touch lid one. There's a pedal bin version. I wonder which one is better. But DH insisted on the touch lid. He reckoned it's easier to clean.

Pinkponiesrock · 05/11/2015 12:20

I've got one and its alright however the best bin award goes to the Morphy Richards one that has a sensor! It opens automatically, has buttons too if you want to do it manually, and has a special removable hoop that hold the bin bag up. Lidls white bin bags are the perfect size for it and really strong. I got it for £25 in B&Q in the sale, my Brabrantia has been relegated to holding the recycling as the catch on it is temperamental.

HeadDreamer · 05/11/2015 12:20

But it seems AlbusPercival thinks the pedal version is better Sad

OliviaDunham · 05/11/2015 12:21

It's a bin you chick your rubbish in, a £20 bin isn't going to do a worse job than a £100 bin - much better things to splash out on IMO

OliviaDunham · 05/11/2015 12:22

*chuck

Cathpot · 05/11/2015 12:22

Had ours about 12 years and when the lid catch broke be used I dropped the lid I rang them to ask if I could buy a new lid and they sent me s new

Cathpot · 05/11/2015 12:23

One for free-

Cathpot · 05/11/2015 12:24

Sorry , that was very poor typing.

But I have a nice bin!

Micah · 05/11/2015 12:30

Agreed, but how often will the cheap bin need replacing? I paid £80 for my Brabantia, but have had it over 15 years, so what £5 a year and still going strong.

I've had cheap bathroom bins in that time that have cost me more in total over the years.

KatharineClifton · 05/11/2015 12:39

Thank you Kim82 that's exactly what I need atm.

OliviaDunham · 05/11/2015 12:42

My cheap bin has lasted 9 years so far, just think there's better things to spend £100 on.

FinestGrundyTurkey · 05/11/2015 12:44

I've got this one (I think mine was cheaper) - have had it a good few years (forget how long) & it's still in great condition

We recycle most things & it takes over a week to fill it but no leaks.
