Why does my husband's clothes cupboard smell of cannabis?

It stinks. One of our cats often sleeps in there. But it just smells of weed. It's awful. There are no drugs in there. What could be giving off this odour? Help!

Haggis how strange!

Despite being very heavily pregnant I am going to empty the cupboards today and reveal the mystery....!

I know-it's clearly something to do with the plastic itself. I was checking the packaging to make sure there wasn't Anythjng smuggled in there! Do reveal all!

coveredinsnot · 27/08/2015 11:12

The cupboards will not be emptied today. I've realised that was a silly and overambitous idea! Soon, my friends, soon.

Ask dh to do it while you supervise?

coveredinsnot · 27/08/2015 12:54

Good idea! Smile

If he doesn't agree to help locate smell, tell him you assume it is because he has been having the odd spliff, and knows there's no point checking for cat pee, damp or rot... If he still won't help, burn the lot? Seriously though, i'm sure it's really annoying you now. If I smell something nasty, i'll hunt until I find it. And just as well, it's usually cat shit. Bastard cat

LargeGoldAtrociousCunt · 27/08/2015 13:10

Have you lived there long op? Could previous tenants have stashed something in there?

about 15 years ago I lived in a small cottage, The occupant who lived there before us was a smack head and he actually died, In exchange for not paying a deposit I took the cottage in the state he had left it and agreed to clear it out, It was awful with needles all over, fridge was full of mouldy food, dog bowls left full off food etc (You get the jist).

Anyway I must have been living there for nearly 2 years when I found a stash of heroin in the build in wardrobe in the bedroom. I had been using the wardrobe since I moved in but it was 2 years later when I came across it.

isupposeitsverynice · 27/08/2015 16:07

I reckon cat wee too, my cat went through a phase of pissing all over the place and it smelt slightly different every time and I distinctly remember thinking once or twice that it really smelt like weed (once it had overtones of aftershave or something like that, really peculiar).

coveredinsnot · 28/08/2015 07:39

Oh Large that just sounds terrible! Brave brave person you are to clear all that up.

I'll be furious if it is cat pee but not surprised. We have two cats and the female is my least favourite because she's a bit of a tramp. Leaves dirt everywhere she goes. The other cat is lovely and squashy and clean as a whistle. I did have a quick look in the corners of the cupboards yesterday to look for damp but saw nothing. The cupboards are built in and one of the walls is an external wall which does sometimes get damp, so it would make sense. If I find no mould then it has to be the pissing cat Angry or a very large stash of weed!

Does your DH put worn clothes in the wardrobe? I bet it's,a combination of stale, sweaty clothes and smelly cat. DH needs to clean all of his clothes properly, clean the wardrobe and ban the cat. If the wardrobe stinks then so does he and people will have noticed

SusanHollander · 28/08/2015 20:09

My DH used to smoke a lot of weed in his youth and says it's almost certainly cat wee as it smells very similar - I think it smells different to different people, so some people wouldn't compare the two and others would. Bet you find a very pissy corner.....

coveredinsnot · 28/08/2015 20:18

Oh bugger. I think I'd prefer mould!

BoomChickenSoup · 28/08/2015 20:22

How long has it been smelly and can your DH smell it too? I ask because you mention that you are pregnant and my sense of smell changes when I'm pregnant. We had one particular cupboard that smelt so bad I had to hold my breath any time I walked past it but couldn't smell anything at all before or after pregnancy.

movingonup2015 · 03/09/2015 13:09

I have to disagree with others in the sense that its not strong enough to come through the walls...

my neighbours smoke weed and every morning and every evening regular as clockwork the smell wafts through to my side and drives me crazy!! even with the windows shut.

they aren't growing it (AFAIK) because the smell only wafts through at 2 times of the day....

MrsMook · 03/09/2015 21:01

I knew a cat that sought out weed when it was being smoked and would later return being stoned. Cat nip is for wimps.

My nose went super sensitive in my first pregnancy.

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 03/09/2015 21:03

The smell of weed is not strong enough to go through a dividing wall

Oh yes it definitely is. I lived somewhere where I knew for a fact the neighbours were growing it and drying it in the roof which was adjacent to my DS's bedroom. Since he was a baby at the time I'm pretty sure the smell wasn't his stash but t was potent, especially in summer.

coveredinsnot · 03/09/2015 21:06

Yes I agree weed smells can definitely travel through walls! It's potent stuff.

We're in a detached house so thus definitely is not our issue.
