Are Dysons crap?

My Dyson seems to get less effective by the day. Should I be cleaning the filters all the time? Am I supposed to take it somewhere to get serviced? Do people do that? I'm tempted to just buy a new one in the hope that a new vacuum will encourage me to use it a bit more! But I wouldn't know what to do with the old one - would a charity shop take it do you think?

I bought my first Dyson last week out of sheer desperation.

Last year, I bought a large black rug from Argos - and nothing has been able to pick up fluff/crumbs etc from it. Not my upright vax brand machine. Nor any of the three other brands I've borrowed from family/friends in an attempt to find something. So I always just had to pick it up and shake it off, then sweep up the crumbs from the wooden floor beneath.

Anyway, I've bee saving and last week I bought a cordless Dyson V6 and it is excellent! picks up from the rug with no problem. Battery life isn't great. Think there's less than 10 minutes if you keep it on 'boost'. But about 20-25 mins if you have it on normal setting.

Have to admit, I've not even considered cleaning the filters etc but just had a look at the care booklet and it does suggest doing this every three months.

There is also a careline that you can call to buy replacement filters and other parts.

Is your machine out of warranty? if so, do you think you could call the careline and see what they suggest? It might just be a small new part that you need.

But out of four other brands that Ive tried, I definitely do think that Dyson has been best. Though can't yet give my opinion on how long it lasts.

I love my dyson, I have an animal dc41, a white dog and dark wood floors, fluffy rugs and carpet upstairs. It picks up everything. I take it apart, clean filter, unwind threads from rotating brushes every so often but it's brilliant. It's 2 years old and still works as well as the day it was bought.

ouryve · 14/08/2015 14:11

Yep, certain filters do need cleaning.

Ours is getting on a bit, now and has developed a couple of air leaks due to wear and tear. Hopefully a couple of £5 parts should fix that.

rabbit123 · 14/08/2015 15:00

I can't stand Dyson's. They're so expensive but feel so cheap and don't pick up anymore than any other vacuum. They also need to be regularly cleaned out just to keep the suction strong and the filters are forever getting blocked up. We bought one a few years ago thinking it would be better than our 20 year old, hand me down bagged Sebo, but it fell to pieces within 2 years. And lost all its suction. I'll stick with bags thanks, James.

ProcrastinatorGeneral · 16/08/2015 10:47

I've got a hand me down dyson dc05. It's bloody ace. You've reminded me I need to wash the filters though. Thanks:)

JillBYeats · 16/08/2015 10:48

In my experience, yes.

SandraMelandra · 16/08/2015 11:00

I've had no bother with mine. It's nine now, and I've only needed to buy one (really cheap) part so far.

I only clean the filters rarely, probably three times so far. Blush

But, it still works brilliantly. I have a dog, carpet, tiles and hardwood floors and it manages brilliantly.

I also love the fact that you can take it apart with a knife and fix any little niggles.

GoodbyeToAllOfThat · 16/08/2015 18:35

I've just bought a cordless Dyson for the kitchen and I am seriously unhappy with its inability to collect something as lightweight as a raisin or kernel of corn. But I expect that's not your complaint.

I think regular Dysons are very good.

Floralnomad · 16/08/2015 18:39

I have a vacuum cleaner collection and although I own several Dysons the only one that is really good is the handheld . The cordless ones are very disappointing and I have now moved on to a Bosch athlet cordless which is much better .

VeryPunny · 16/08/2015 18:40

We have a cordless Dyson and as a PP said it's a bit crap TBH. Can't cope with food like sweet corn.

meglet · 16/08/2015 18:41

procrastinator I've got a 10+yr old DC04 which is still going strong. had a couple of repairs but it's still reliable.

Ridingthegravytrain · 16/08/2015 18:52

No they are great. We have 2 one is cordless. We have 2 big shedding dogs so I vacuum ably 3 times a day. But yes you need to clean the filters. And keep the cylinder bit in the middle clean as the holes can get clogged.

Ridingthegravytrain · 16/08/2015 18:53

About not ably. Though I guess ably too Wink

rabbit123 · 16/08/2015 19:09

I think the older Dyson's were fine before they moved production over seas. We had a DC14 and it was useless.

DurhamDurham · 16/08/2015 19:13

I've had my Dyson for years and it's still in fine working order. I remember to wash the filters every year or so and it picks up whatever crap is on the rugs and improves the pile on all the bedroom carpets.

dingit · 16/08/2015 19:18

I have a DC50 that is three months old and stopped sucking! I googled it and found it has a design fault. Took it apart to find a blockage near the cyclone. Looks like I will need to do this regularly Hmm. Emailed Mr James Dyson, and got one of their standard emails as a reply...

GoodbyeToAllOfThat · 17/08/2015 06:41

Yes. What this means in practice is that the Dyson cordless is not really fit for kitchen clean-up. Very good for everywhere else. Unfortunately, I bought it for kitchen clean-up.

Aquamarine70 · 17/08/2015 10:07

I love my Dyson. My first one lasted 10 years. I love seeing how much it picks up.

BeautifulBatman · 17/08/2015 10:09

I think they're seriously overpriced. Miele are far superior.

m0therofdragons · 17/08/2015 10:18

Mum's been through 3 mieles and gave in and got a Dyson 4 years ago and loves it. I've had mine for 11 years. ... probably need to clean the filters, Ooops might have done that once, possibly. Oh well it's still fab. I have a mini hand held one too which I love as well. Can't understand why anyone wouldn't find them fab. Are older ones better?

Notso · 17/08/2015 10:26

I hated ours much prefer my Miele. MIL loves her Dyson though.

kiwigirl42 · 17/08/2015 10:27

Miele for me as well. First one lasted 20 years

blueshoes · 17/08/2015 11:39

Don't like dysons. Too fiddly with pointless design features. Breaks down. Aupairs don't know how to use it.

Henry any day.

loraflora · 20/08/2015 13:09

I bought a dyson cordless, hoping it would be adequate since I had a small house. It was endlessly getting blocked and the 15 mins running time didn't help, especially since I often needed the max setting so it ran out in even less time. I ended up getting a henry along with an extra turbo brush attachment, thinking I would still use the dyson for small jobs here and there, but I haven't really bothered using it since.

CremeBrulee · 20/08/2015 13:35

I hated the Dyson we had - rubbish at doing the actual job of hoovering and so hard to clean out properly. Who wants to wash their Hoover out in a regular basis? Not me.

Sebo or Miele are much better imho.
