redheadmum · 24/11/2006 17:18

Q- yes am starting for the first time today...got so inspired by the shiny sink have cleared out utility cupboard and thrown a load of stuff out!!!

I am just soooooooo sick of the house being a tip. I work from home too and I'm just finding it stressful doing the firefighting every time I hold a class.

I'm really interested in starting the de-clutter but am going to be patient and do the baby steps. It makes sense to have routines just to get the basics in....I know its a better start to the day if I come down to a clean kitchen.....

having said that as I write the tea is on, there are baby plates etc all over the floor where ds has thrown them out of his cupboard, books where he has discovered some boxes of books, my little girls drawing stuff......boo hoo!

Oh, whoops! Men! I hope he has noticed the posh table by now. I hope he is very appreciate of the other efforts you have made, too.

It would be nice to be able to see my dining table. Ah, well. Perhaps I can sort some of it this w/e.

luda Lunch was fine but very basic. Sausages from our local butcher in a bun with salad. Watermelon for pudding. We went to town later for a doc's appointment and got pretty wet. Do you go to the shoe chappie near Cheap Charlies? If so, do you find them expensive? I've had several pairs of boots reheeled recently and it's either £6 or £7 a time and had a repair done on one pair - just a bit of leather at the back of each boot on the inside - and that's £6! Ouch.

ISawTortoiseKissingSantaClaus · 24/11/2006 19:27

Evening all.

Ruby how annoying after all your effort.

Well done redheadmum.Sounds like you are making a great start.
Does anyone remember how we used to sound like that at the start of the FLYing stuff months ago? Maybe starting baby steps again would be good for some of us!

redheadmum · 24/11/2006 19:47

do any of you have young kids? mine are 17 months and 4 years (not at school)....wondered if anyone has any tips?

am doing tidy up time with dd (4yr old) but of course 17 month ds sees this as ample oppotunity to tip up boxes and spread more toys around....

plus how do you balance doing the housework and giving kids some attention? I tried the 'lets do it together' approach today and failed miserably

redheadmum · 24/11/2006 19:49

ps Ruby show him yr fancy knickers and freshly shaved legs and dH won't bother about veg/salad debate.....maybe you can put a flower arrangement in yr teeth??????

ISawTortoiseKissingSantaClaus · 24/11/2006 19:51

I have DD1 3.6 and DD2 2.4 at home all day. They play well together or watch a bit of tv.
Also have DS1 9 and DS2 7. But only a few times a week.Long story! Will explain later if you want details or look on past fly threads! Its all there!

satinshoes · 24/11/2006 20:36

redheadmum. You're doing great!

I have 2.9 DD and bump due on 13th dec.

DD helps me tidy up before we go up for bath. I also take the washing up at bathtime and put away while the bath is running. In the morning while she is eating breakfast I clear dishwasher and refill etc.

The idea I guess is do jobs that take 1 min, 2 mins, 3 mins when you can or while you are waiting for something eg, wipe kitchen surfaces while kettle is boiling.

In the long run it saves you time.

On my infestation note I can confirm the cat definitely has fleas. DH combed him tonight and one jumped. yuk. Everywhere is sprayed. We just need the drops we put on cat last night to start working and then re-apply. It is gross though. I have done 5 loads of washing today with bedding, bath mats, towels etc. I am sooooo glad i bought the tumble dryer a couple of weeks ago!!!

HazelnutsRoastingOnAnOpenFire · 24/11/2006 21:38

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thats better!!

Evening all.
Sorry I cant scream at home or I will wake DD and DS2 up. I don't know what has got in to DS1 today. He has been in 1 big strop all day!! Even at school I had to see his teacher and she said he has been really bad today. Hes been fighting, kicking, throwing things, wont not do any school work, he got the paints and poured them over the floor this afternoon. We tried to talk to him but he just would not talk. We walked home ok (got wet) but as soon as we got in and started to get changed and dried he started again! He would not put clothes on then he was throwing toys every where. I got him to his bedroom and he trashed that! Dinner time he pushed his dinner on the floor and then kicked it about. He would not even watch the TV. (he lives for the TV) It got that bad that DD,DS2 and me were crying. I just did not know what to do. Hes in bed now but he is not asleep. I really really hope he is not like this tomorrow. It is like someone has gave him something which has made him go mad. I just don't know what to do.

I am dreading getting up tomorrow

I don't know how I feel, angry, upset, sad, fed-up all of them at the same time.

I think I will go to bed soon. he has drained me right out.

ISawTortoiseKissingSantaClaus · 24/11/2006 22:04

Oh dear HN.Thats sounds a bit odd. I hope he is ok tomorrow.
I have just got DS's to bed! They wanted to stay up but i said it was getting too late!

HazelnutsRoastingOnAnOpenFire · 24/11/2006 22:06

luda Not looking good for your bank balance this month with the cars.

redheadmum You have done well for the first day of FLYing. Well done you The joys of having littuns. that is their job to tip the toy boxes out just as you finish put the toys in them DD (2 years and 1 week) does that only to get the toy that was on top of of toys in the first place.

Ruby I hope your dinner went better than the start did. My XP1 would not even bother to sit at the table if I even done anything like you did. I done a great looking table for his birthday and always done one at Christmas and he would just get his plate, fill it and then go and sit down in front of the TV. Where he would then just moan that I had not done the right veg, or he want beef and not lamb. There was always something wrong with my cooking.

tortoise Yes I remember the start of these threads. Just at the same time I started MN. Every other post was "Shine your Sink" "Wear shoes" and "Baby Steps"

Q Love your Christmas name

I love mince pies. Mince pie with tin cream or real cream or ice cream. Yummy Even just on there own
I got 3 boxes of six mince pies just before I was ill. Its only me that likes them and I have none left

redheadmum · 24/11/2006 22:10

de-de-de just doing me sink......shoes tmw!

spikejack · 24/11/2006 22:11

Hi all,

I've been subscribing to MumsNet for a couple of months now and am addicted and have just found the courage to make my first posting!

I have spent many an hour (!) laughing myself senseless at the anecdotes of some Mums Netters and their hamster casseroles, painful toys to step on and nightmare in-laws etc. But all the while, my housework, although maintained by the skin of my teeth, seems to build endlessly.

Today, I happened to stumble accross a mention of a certain 'Fly Lady' and her 'Baby Steps'. I found a link to her website and after reading the 31 initial pointers (whoops - don't think I was supposed to sit and read them all in one go!), I found that I have at least 2 'Hot Spots' that I know of and am in desparate need of a rota. As an Administrator of 10 years I used to pride myself on my organisational skills and ability to multi-task. But with a 'crusing' only-just-1 year old-a-week-ago in tow, I struggle to even have a shower before 10 at night now!

So, I've just 'joined the Fly-Lady group'. Am slightly worried that I might receive several hundred emails a day from a slightly fanatical Dettol fan. My DH has just asked me what I'm doing and when I tried to explain the whole FlyLady thing, he looked at me with the raised eyebrow look of disapproval and said - "don't chuck anything of mine out". Great - that was my plan - now I'm scuppered! It was said with a hint of menace and slight panic, should I inadvertantly throw away one of his Haynes Motor Manuals (which I don't think he has ever actually opened) or some equally under-used object.

Does anyone else have this problem - a DH who hoardes everything, "just in case" ?

Actually, I've been looking for a valid reason to rid myself of my beloved knee-high Faith platform boots in a size 3 for about the past 5 years. Nothing wrong with them except I look like I'm trying to be Jordan when I wear them and they are a tad late-nineties.

So tomorrow I will begin my Baby Steps, under the close supervision of my DH.
I'm sure he'll appreciate our newly transformed, clean house. At the moment, I am standing to type, as I can't fit a chair at the computer desk, due to the Everest-sized pile of ironing that I'm about to trip over. It isn't usually this bad - honestly. MY DH and DS have been poorly this week with a horrible winter vomitting bug, so I've been a bit pre-occupied with 'cleaning-up' in other areas, if you know what I mean. Somehow, I've managed to avoid being ill - so far.

Anyway, I suppose the purpose of this posting was to say hi and also find out if the Fly Lady thing is worth it. Isn't she a bit fanatical? Am I being dragged into a cult without knowing it?! What's the best way to do the BabySteps thing? Do I just do Kelly's mission every day and that's it? Oh, ignorant is me...

Anyway, I'm off to shine my sink....

Oh Ruby! Am lol @ DH snoring like a badger!

Hi spikejack. Welcome to the FLYers!
I'm sure someone whos brain is working will answer your Questions!

HazelnutsRoastingOnAnOpenFire · 24/11/2006 22:18

Its not like him at all tortoise. Yes he has done all those things before but just 1 or may 2 per strop. Not many strops in 1 day either, 1 maybe 2 really bad strops in 1 day. He has been good over the last few months. Even better since not seeing his. It is like he has been building/storing them all up and today was the day to let them all out. I have never seem him like he was today. Yes he has had some very bad strops before, but they only ever last15 to 20 minutes at most, then he is normaly very quiet after them. I really dont know what has got to him today.

He is a sleep now at long last. I have everything crossed that he is not like it tomorrow.

DS2 always wants to stop up to see "I`m a celebrity, get me out of here!" But he has never got to see one yet as he has always gone to sleep before they start. lol

hey Spike - its you me and Q on the first day of baby steps!

I figure we do n't have to do everything the Lady says it's just a way of thinking about and getting into some kind of routine so the mess isn't up to the rafters (as is now). I haven't looked beyond day 3 or so just to check I don't have to do anything more than shine my sink. I think I could get to just doing that (heh heh). Are we supposed to do the mission then????

my Dh smiled indulgently at the announcement of FlyLady was now in our life....little realising what will be instore. Surely he should be frightened by a shiny sink? Still he is the Tidy One, and i the Sloven. I always maintain he should be at home.....

QuootiepiesBetterThanMincePies · 24/11/2006 22:23

Ruby - im ed to see you here! Thought it was date night
