Do you have a toilet brush?

GermanHouseCat · 13/07/2015 09:57

My cleaner insists that I have a toilet brush - a proper old fashioned one that always seem to get filthy.

I bought what I thought was a compromise in one of those toilet duck ones that have disposable heads, but she refuses to use it.

What does everyone else do? I was never brought up wirh one, and previous cleaners have put rubber gloves on and got stuck in.

My toilet brushes are from lidl, it comes in a pack of one holder and two brushes - the holder is of a design that the brush hangs inside it, rather than sitting in a pool of dirty water Smile it is regularly used, with toilet cleaner liquid, and often bleached/disinfected depending on what I have to hand at the time. It's fine, no visible poo, no smell, I'm always puzzled by the toilet brush hate on MN.

No loo brushes in my house! We use the duck stick thing. I also put bleach down every night as part of the household routine - I make sure I'm last to use the bathroom before bed and bleach it after I'm done so the bleach gets a good couple of hours in there.

no! If it needs a scrub I use an old toothbrush and bin it.

It's so amusing how many people use bleach. You do all know that whilst bleach is a good disinfectant, it doesn't actually clean anything, right? All the dirt is still there, it's just...bleached. Not to mention the chlorine gas it releases is actually a toxicant.

Surely the main no. 1 point of cleaning the toilet though is to kill germs? Bleach does that within seconds 100% Grin

I buy cheap white toilet brush/holder combos from Tesco, put a little cleaner in the bottom and just replace them every couple of months. Maybe we have funny shaped toilets, or maybe my lot have funny shaped bums but I cannot bear poo marks in the bowl.

Of course, maybe I feed my family such a healthy diet and keep them so hydrated that their poos are large and soft (stealth boast) and in other houses with inferior eating/drinking practices it just doesn't happen and they don't need toilet brushes. No? OK.

Of course bleach cleans.

This thread is hilarious. Toilet brushes are a necessary evil. I have a Lakeland one which has a solution holder you dunk it in, push the handle down, it swivels against ridges which get the nasties off. You replenish solution as necessary Smile

If I walk into someone's house and smell bleach after heaving I just assume someone has had D&V or something or they are covering up horrible smells. I don't know what it does germ wise but the smell is not worth it.

Plus totally agree it's wrong not to have one available for anyone who uses the toilet and isn't the person who cleans it.

Bleach does not clean! It'll stop clingons and it'll bleach but it is crap for cleaning.

See I love the smell of bleach. My cleaning generally consists of sploshing water and bleach around with a microfibre cloth.

What do anti brush types expect their guests to do, out of interest? Or don't you have guests?

We used to out flushable wipes down the loo. Big mistake. Expensive mistake! I would never put disposable brushes down there, they just don't disintegrate.

I use bleach to kill germs. Thats my main concern when it comes to toilets. So i put bleach down leave for 5 mins then flush and all germs are gone Grin To clean, i have some blocks in the cistern that cleans the bowl with a soapy flush. Therefore i don't see the need to scrub at all Smile

I'm more shocked at the people who use wipes and flush them or who use insane amounts of bleach, than those who have bog brushes.

Yes, the smell of bleach makes me feel ill, I hate walking into houses that smell of it.

Who I really have to try and stop myself wretching if I smell it. Awful.

Well... Bleach makes my toilet look and smell clean... It's not as if I'm gonna pour a cocktail down it and suck it up bendy straws.
