Do playrooms get used or are they just dumping grounds?

How old are your children? We were having this conversation the other day and the mums with children over about 6 said they don't get used, more a small children thing. I have very small children and would love one.

luckymummy2sophie · 19/11/2006 14:26

We have a playroom which should be the dining room in the house. I LOVE it!! It has an arch between that and our kitchen so I can see lo and get on with my chores. For me, the best thing is having a 'kiddies' room for all her toys & books etc, which means that by the evening, when I want to sit down with dh, our lounge is our own adult haven with no toys and baby stuff lying around. My lo is only 6 mths old, but I think it's a great idea, and will come into it's own in the future. I have several friends who wish they could have a payroom, so I say GO FOR IT!!!

luckymummy2sophie · 19/11/2006 14:28

I suppose I should be balanced and add that my nephews have one too, they are 6 and 8, and their parents are always moaning that they don't use their playroom! So McDreamy may well be right!

our spare rm doulbles as a playroom - the kids watch TV and have a playstation in there. It gets used a lot - keeps my living-room toy free.

kids are 5 and 7 BTW

That sounds great Yorkiegirl, I do remember a few of my friends having a space like that - I was so envious, we had such a small house!

dinny · 19/11/2006 14:33

we've just moved from a house where we had a big playroom downstairs - used it all the time, also had little table for crafty type things and computer set up in it so dd and ds could do Cbeebies games on wet days (and I could MN!)

our new place is much smaller but dd and ds share a room so our 3rd bedroom is a playroom (with computer in it) and doubles as spare room too (we stick dbl mattress in when we have guests)

seriously couldn't be without somewhere for all their toys etc - am always strict aboput keeping everything sorted out and tidy though else it wouldn't be such a nice room to be in.

me again!
our room has always been referred to as 'the den' since we moved in as it was dh's 'playroom'!!! had his table football (now sold!) and PS2 etc. It got turned into dd's playroom when she was born, but we still call it the den. I think you have good ideas yorkiegirl, a den when the kids are older will be so cool.

hatwoman · 19/11/2006 14:42

I think a lot depends on lay-out and age. if play-rooms are remote in some way, younger kids won;t like them, older ones will. but I'd much rather eat in a conservatory - so that's a good start.

LIZS · 19/11/2006 14:43

We currently use our 2nd bedroom as a playroom but it still spills out onto the landing. really miss our old flat with large "cellar" room (on same level !) where the kids had everything out all the time and we could just shut the door to it. In our ongoing housing quest we are looking for similar sort of space .

roisin · 19/11/2006 15:02

YG When we moved house dss were 3 and 5, and at this stage a move to a playroom worked well for us. We use our second (huge) bedroom as spare room/playroom. We made sure we had good storage in the playroom for all their toys, and made them responsible for keeping it tidy. (Which mostly works well, though they do go through phases.)

We have 'craft' supplies in the breakfast room, but virtually all other 'playing' happens in the playroom (or the garden). They don't have toys in their bedroom, and rarely bring them downstairs. (Though we do play family games together in the lounge.)

We don't have TV or PC or anything like that in the playroom yet: they are still downstairs under adult supervision/limited access.

The boys share a bedroom, and ds1 plays or reads in the playroom in the evening when ds2 is in bed going to sleep.

tortoiseshell · 19/11/2006 15:07

We got so sick of toys cluttering up the living room that we turned the spare bedroom into a dedicated playroom, and it is great - at the moment we can't use it, as we are decorating and the difference in the kids is amazing - they will normally just go and get on with stuff in there, whereas now they're rattling round the whole house. Definitely a good idea. I would also recommend thie range for storing toys/craft things etc.

all4girlz · 19/11/2006 15:15

i reckon good idea we have a play room and it gets used alot but stuff still finds it way all over the house. mine are 1 3 5 and 13 btw.

Bugsy2 · 19/11/2006 15:17

My playroom is the most used room in the house. It is a nice comfy room with a big sofa & cheap but soft Ikea rug on the floor. It also has the only TV in it.
I have lots of storage units & bookshelves, so that all the kids stuff goes away at the end of the day.
It works really well for us. I'd say go for it, but make it a room that you are happy to be in as well.

lol- should be in the notices....love to see everyone do a double take! I'll tell my mum when it's on!

tortoiseshell · 19/11/2006 15:36

could be worse though - could be 'how clean is your house?'

earlysbird · 19/11/2006 16:20

We have one and use it all the time, partly because DTs share a bedroom at the mo so we have the room - when they want separate rooms it will have to go. I love being able to shut the door on it in the evening and go into the nice tidy sitting room for some peace!

pedilia · 19/11/2006 16:28

We are in the process of buying another house and the deciding factor is the fact it has a playrrom off the kitchen, also has a double garage half of which has been converted into a room so ideal den when they are older.

Can't wait to get the toys out the lounge nad have some adult only space.

HazelnutsRoastingOnAnOpenFire · 19/11/2006 16:45

My lounge is
A lounge
TV room
Dining room
Craft room
Computer room.
and Playroom

I would love to have a play room with a TV in there with a very large sofa. Then my lounge would be a lounge for every one to use for a lounge and not have to worry about finding a space b/c toys are all over the floor. DD put her teddies and dolls on the sofa so they can sleep. Good job its only me that needs to sit on the sofa. Then I get given dolls or teddies to cuddle

Kittypickle · 19/11/2006 16:45

We have one that is close to the kitchen, it works really well though toys do tend to spill into the end of the kitchen where the dining table is. I'm hoping that it will make a good den as they are older, otherwise they will end up in the garage ! Agree that good storage is essential.
