funam - you've hit the nail on the head, there. I think DH and I have to do it together, and start with clothes (of which he has too many, anyway).

I don't think we'd get anywhere if I left him to it. Its going to be a slow process. I hope I have the patience.

JKSLtd · 27/07/2015 18:09

Having thought it was too woo for me I actually emptied my bag yesterday and today!
And thanked it.
I've found I keep changing between a small bag (just me) and a rucksack (me & kids on days out) and a bigger bag (me & kids on other days I haven't quite worked out but when I feel I should use the cath kidston bag mil bought me!).
So I rearranged the boxes inside my kitchen drawer (previously known as the Drawer of Doom) and I a have the perfect space left for purse, sunglasses, tissue packet, polos, etc.

Wasn't sure how it would work but it did today. Picked the bag (rucksack) and packed relevant bits in, went out.
Came home and unpacked.

It could work Grin

JKS
Are you feeling the joy?
:)

CycleChic · 27/07/2015 19:23

Keep us posted, JSK!

From upthread (the post was on a previous page so I've forgotten who wrote this): I am trying hard not to feel resentful that I have given away more than half of my novels, while his books on self- help and exercise are now dominating the bookshelves.
Holy crap that is so me, only regarding our dining /lounge! ! Ive always generally struggled to carve out a space for me, often let my hobbies go when life hits, etc. the bedroom isn't so bad as I want it to be a sanctuary (though his side of the bed currently looks like stage 1 of hording, our kitchen is a galley so there's no scope for either of us, but somehow, with the combination of Konmari and him taking up another musical instrument (keyboard, which he plays most days so needs to be left out ), I feel like I'm not welcome in there. like it's not my space. at times, I also feel like I'm paring things down so I can just go away, and walk away from my family , or at least DH. We do have issues but are trying to work with them... I guess the stuff issue is one major one.
Thanks for listening, sorry to get all serious!

bobblypop · 27/07/2015 20:22

Evening all
I am thankful reading this thread thatbdh doesnt have too much stuff. (The 3 teenage dc however are another matter, but in many ways that is easier as it is mostly confined to their rooms. )
tonight I have kondoed the rest of the youngest 3 clothes that were in the wash first time round.tomorrow I am doing the lage mountain of socks, then that is clothes done!
books are done too ... this was much easier since getting my kindle a few years ago I have gradually reduced my actual books greatly. (Maybe I also should kondo my kindle collection -does that count? )
need to further kind dvds then...
Toys tomorrow...
then maybe toiletries.....
I also need to go shopping for new joyous clothes!

SillyStuffBiting · 28/07/2015 07:37

Good morning! This book landed on my doorstep a week ago and it's been such a catalyst for a weird change in me.

I've been trying to get myself sorted out for ages, the number of books on decluttering and cleaning on my kindle testify to that. I was overseas for a month living with a super organised relative. It struck me that even though they have domestic help living in, their house was only in such good order because everything had a place and there wasn't too much stuff.

Inspired, I ordered this book after reading about it on here. I got home last weekend, started kondo on Tuesday, so a week ago. I'm through clothes, books and paperwork. 17 full bin bags have left this house and it's feeling lighter in here all the time.

Next it's komono, this will be the biggest category for me. I think it's right to say Mari Kondo hasn't wrote this book with chaotic families in mind! I've made lists of categories to work on within this section so hopefully that will help.

But the change in me is unexpected. I came in from work last night and started gathering the paperwork whilst dinner was cooking. I started sorting in between dinner and bed/book/bath routines for the boys, went out to a class at 8, came back and finished off the paperwork before bed at 10.30. The time I had free last night was spent effectively whereas usually it's 'dead' time, watching tv or faffing about on the iPad.

Iqueen · 28/07/2015 09:21

SillyStuffBiting It's great living a more purposeful life, isn't it? Grin

I'm so ridiculously happy all the time (but nowhere near finished kondoing!) Even getting a diagnosis of skin cancer 3 weeks ago, hasn't dented my happiness! [dancing]

You must be super tidy already, if you managed to do ALL your paperwork in such a short time! Shock

fishboneschokus · 28/07/2015 11:33

I also am paring things so I can go away.

(Said cycle)

I feel this in a way. Not to be morbid but I (and others on the guardian thread) are 'tidying' to save relatives the sorting after death. I am not due to die; more of a hit by a bus' thing.

Not sure that makes sense.

Why kondo a kindle?

Good Lord silly!
:)

Lovewearingjeans · 28/07/2015 12:16

iqueen sending Flowers about diagnosis. I know what you mean about feeling freer. I had this need to spend and buy for a long time, but am feeling more contented, and more secure in myself, so don't seem to 'need' things as much. To the extent it was my birthday a few weeks ago, and was shopping with my mum for something from her to me, and couldn't really find anything I needed, or even wanted. Just sorted DVDs with the children, and I chose two out of 40 'grown up' DVDs I wanted to keep. I also have a pile of 20 children's DVD's. Just need my husband to go through both piles of rejects.
Been reading a bit more of the clothing part in the book, and I have to disagree on storage. I have to store some items in plastic boxes under in my bed, because I really have no other room. They are now organised, so I can find everything in them though.

prettymess · 28/07/2015 12:50

Sorry to hear of your diagnosis, Iqueen. Thinking of you!

Iqueen · 28/07/2015 13:19

Thank you for the good wishes! Smile Serious, but not necessarily life-threatening! Grin Que sera, sera!

prettymess · 28/07/2015 14:21

Oh good attitude! I'm having an MRI on Thursday and hopefully they will find something as I can't bear more pain and waiting for a diagnosis.

IDismyname · 28/07/2015 19:18

Cake and Flowers to Iq and pretty for your additional burdens at the moment.

I am feeling lighter and lighter mentally as each day passes, and I Kondo more stuff. Shame its all MY stuff, but am SO hoping this will rub off on DH and we can start on his belongings.

Then I will feel as light as a feather!

I've 'rescued' several really holey T shirts, and plan to run them through my overlocker to turn them into dusters. Then, I'll be able to swoosh through the whole house without having to pause to empty every. single. windowsill.

Tell me, has anyone been able to acquire empty shoe boxes from shoe shops? I think I only possess one in the whole house. Ironically, I used to chuck them out when I'd bought a pair of shoes... I should have kept them and started throwing other stuff out instead!

Lovewearingjeans · 28/07/2015 20:17

I put a shout out on FB for shoeboxes. Have 8 to collect Thurs Smile

bobblypop · 28/07/2015 22:32

evening all
have kondo'd the huge sock mountain this evening. Also gave away large box of chuggington track and trains that ds has grown out of. I was a bit sad about getting rid of them but a lovely little boy came to collect them (with his Dad!!) and looked so excited by them - it was good to think they would be being appreciated somewhere instead of gathering dust!!
Also bought some new clothes which are now put away with labels removed.
Not quite as much kondoing as I hoped tonight but I have painted half of little ones bedroom walls!
tomorrow I want to crack on with toys but also need to do toiletries in the bathroom....
also have to take dogs for injections and do more painting of bedroom walls... all after work!

morning all
iq and pretty sending positive healing vibes your way

off to work in a few mins. finishing at 3 today and dc and dh all away for a few days so hoping to get some serious kondoing (and decorating!) done.
I am going to finish off the toys this afternoon - as much as I can, then go through them again when dc home and hopefully reduce a bit further....Hmm I am kondoing all the ones I know haven't been played with for ages and have been forgotten about for a start.
then want to finish the first coat of paint on walls in little ones bedroom...
also need to generally tidy and clean (you know, hoover the floors etc) as that has been a bit neglected in favour of kondoing which is all well and good but my house is looking worse by the day!!
Ideally could do with another 6 or 7 hours in a day...
and yes...I suppose kondoing a kindle isn't really necessary!

I think for me the loft and sentimental stuff will be the hardest. The loft is stuffed full of all sorts of keepsakes form all the dc. Baby blankets, pictures, school work , cards, photos....half of me is tempted to just ignore the loft...it doesn't really impact on tidiness of the house...but then that is not really in the spirit of Kondo is it..

Best of luck for your skin cancer treatment iqueen. Amazed at what you manage to achieve bobbly.

I'm still doing books. 50% of my books are now on the shelves and beautifully ordered. (Though my husband chose to move a few around when he got back from work. Would it be okay to kill him?) The other 50% are on the floor.

I've decided that getting the discards out of the house is key for me. Until I've done that I'm just moving stuff around.

Iqueen · 29/07/2015 10:37

Thanks again, for all of your support to prettymess and me - it is really kind. Cake

It is really important to remember to maintain the everyday chores (from time to time!) Kondoing is exciting, but if the rest of the house goes to pot, we can become demotivated! Never a routine housekeeper, I'm finding that I'm now getting the urge to clean the clear areas! Love it! Shock

I'm having trouble getting stuff out of the house, and this is key for me, because at least 3/4 of the Stuff I've got, I don't need at all! I keep dreaming of skips, but my conscience won't let me take that route!

At least, my kondoed airing-cupboard will have more space over the weekend - my pregnant daughter will be taking a bin-bag full of her soft toys! (I hope!)

I keep finding more clothes, that were in 'storage' - actually kondoed into bin-bags years ago, and never left the building! Most will be going, but some now fit again and are classics. Yay!

Going to pack up all the textiles that are to go to the CS, today and make a definite appointment with myself to get them there next week! The spare bedroom will be grateful! Grin

So sorry to hear that *Iq, and *Pretty. I had treatment for skin cancer last year, not fun but all gone now. Hope your's gets sort out soon.

Been a little slow on the kondo front but DD2's room is looking good. My stuff has stayed neat and I have got rid of another 3 bin bags... Blush Procrastinating books and paperwork. Need to delve in...

Halojones2014 · 29/07/2015 11:30

Sorry, I obviously can't do bold!!

CycleChic · 29/07/2015 11:44

iqueen why not arrange a charity shop collection? Then you will HAVE to have enough ready for them for the pre arranged pick up.

Iqueen · 29/07/2015 12:53

CycleChic Grin Tried! I live in a rural area, 60 miles from a city, and with only small CSs... none do collections. Sad I SO envy the people who can get this service, or have cash-for-clothes shops nearby!

When I get to the point that I can donate furniture, there is one place that will collect for free. Otherwise, it is Freecycle/Freegle.
