I sort out anything that I don't think is sellable into a separate bag and label it "for rag" as I also don't want them thinking I'm just being skanky!

educatingarti · 17/01/2016 17:27

But if you aren't sure, you could just sort the obvious stuff like holey socks into a 'for rag' bag and let them sort the rest. They will be used to it as I think most people don't bother sorting!

stiffstink · 17/01/2016 17:31

Heavens above, we have a LOT of boys clothes in the loft!

Against MK's advice we bought 8 x 80litre storage boxes and sorted all the stuff into accessories, handmade knitwear (no sizes), 0-12, 12-24 and 24-36 months, all labelled up.

There are still 3 suitcases of stuff that won't fit in the storage boxes, yikes!

The plan is to wait until baby arrives and then Kondo each age range. Some of it has acquired weird orange marks but I can't be bothered washing unnecessary bits just now, I need some rest!

Now I feel a lot less stressed by it lurking above my head and each age range will be more manageable when the time comes to Kondo. I was shocked by the amount of stuff still with tags on though, mainly bought by my DMum.

Methenyouplus4 · 17/01/2016 20:28

Stiffstink- I found vacum pack bags ideal for this, can easily go under beds/ in awkward cupboards.

educatingarti · 17/01/2016 21:30

Five joyful scarves. The rack is made from the bottle rack from my old fridge (which I never used in there even when my old fridge still worked!)

I have kondoed my scarves- and still have about 15 that bring me joy!! They're knotted onto large wooden coat hangers in my wardrobe.

stiffstink · 18/01/2016 07:35

methen the baby is due in less than 4 weeks so once we know boy/girl I will be getting each box down to Kondo (or pass on completely), so the 8 boxes will probably reduce to 4 at the most if its a boy.

Then the spare boxes can be used for my idealised loft space - camping, Christmas and not much else!

stiffstink · 18/01/2016 07:39

My scarves total 4 and they have their own scarf hanger in the wardrobe.

I also use a hanger with hooks on it for all of my vest tops. I have about 6 so its not worth trying to fold them as I just don't have enough clothing to fill a drawer!

Can you tell I'm slightly obsessed with Kondo storage ideas on Pinterest?!

99percentchocolate · 18/01/2016 09:18

DPD has lost my ziffit packages. £90 worth of DVDs, books, and CDs. Angry and gutted. Ziffit are investigating for me but I'm not holding out any hope.

Zippidydoodah · 18/01/2016 10:36

99- how annoying!!

Might have another look at my scarves...surely I can't have so many joyful ones?! Though I must admit I had an idea of putting some in a drawer in the kids' playroom for some ace imaginative play! That'd be a great way to get joy from them!

99percentchocolate · 18/01/2016 10:57

Yep. Not impressed. Luckily Zippit insures them so if confirmed lost they said they'll pay me the full offer amount. I have a feeling it won't be that straight forward though.

Was Kondo-ing DDs clothes the other day and considered throwing out her dressing up clothes as she doesn't touch them. Instead I bought a basket for £2 off Amazon and put them in the bottom of her wardrobe. She has spent the last two days dressed as various things so definitely seems to have been the right decision. She is getting so much joy from them now.

Dp was impressed with the airing cupboard too - we have so much space in there now! Going to start on the conservatory today as it is just full of rubbish. Definitely the biggest job.

99percentchocolate · 18/01/2016 10:58

educatingarti · 18/01/2016 11:55

The scarves in my picture are my winter "wear with coats and take off and hang up with coats" type. I'm trying to follow KM's principle of making them easy to put away (The cupboard has my coats in too!). My floaty "wear as part of indoor outfit" type scarves are in a plastic storage basket in the top of my wardrobe! Have Kondoed both though and have some to take to chazza.

building2016 · 18/01/2016 12:02

I have about 40 scarves. Post Kondo. Love them. Keep being given them as gifts.

I store them on the back of the door in one of these sort of things.

LexLoofah · 18/01/2016 14:17

herbs and spices done, that was quick and easy now onto the not so easy utility room, doubt there is much joy to be found in there

NotCitrus · 18/01/2016 14:47

4 bin bags of bedding and "clean textiles for recycling" dropped off at the supermarket's Oxfam bin, along with a carrier bag of WEEE (mainly weird cables and modems/routers from when ISPs gave you them). The Oxfam bin was jammed again so I had to leave my bags next to it, covered in more bin bags. Thankfully it was emptied a couple hours later so the stuff has safely gone to a better home, either via Oxfam or any local who saw the label "clean useable bedding"!

Another 5 bin bags out today, but full of wallpaper so doesn't count... The entire contents of the spare room are now in my room so I have to do paperwork and sentimental - it's getting there; I have boxes for my and MrNC's sentimental papers and cards etc that are virtually ready to hide in the loft, a box for relevant work stuff and one for general career planning, and the rest should go in the filing cabinet...

Hello to all of You!
I've joined Mumsnet just to be able to write on this Thread

As my username states, english ist not my native language, so please excuse any mistakes I make Blush

Read about Kondo somewhere on the internet, did my clothes, got the book, read it, found this thread (and the 8 before), read all these, struggled ages with books (small kids, illness an holidays as an excuse) and am now procrastinating because I don't feel like doing cds and dvds and have not yet managed to get the books out of the house. And dreading paperwork, so no incentive to move on quickly.

I'm not following Kondo to the dot, though. I've kept a small "to think about" pile of both clothes and books, and I've bought storage.
My excuse for the storage beeing that it is a chest of drawers in the same design as our wardrobes, I've wanted it for quite a while and I got it really cheap second hand.

On the positive side:
I love opening my clothes drawer. All those t-shirts and underwear, nicely folded and ready to be picked. It's absolutely great!
My dc liked it so much as well, we did his clothes too, and so far (5 or 6 weeks) they stayed tidy.
We do the folding a little bit different so it fits the drawers/boxes better.

Due to getting rid of all my unloved skirts, I was forced to repair the hem of a very much loved one that has been in the "mend" pile for over a year. Took me 10 minutes and I've been wearing it lots since. Feeling very stupid now, wearing skirts I don't like for a year when 10 minute with a needle would have let me wear one I love.

Sorry, very long post.
I'm so excited to 'talk' to people about Kondo though and share my experiences.

LexLoofah · 20/01/2016 14:32

hey not welcome, that is all sounding good

Well utility room sorted and when I went in this morning for a split second I thought we had been robbed as it was so empty when I am used to seeing stuff all over the counter and am ashamed to admit I thought the counter was grey but when I cleared it and cleaned it turns out it is blue!

Clarella · 20/01/2016 14:47

notenglish that all sounds impressive!

I'm only up to clothes (reading the book) but the earlier bits have already 'sparked action' - I'm already chucking more stuff out during general tidying. Eg I've just sorted out ds (3) - and went through all his books. I've been holding on to some old school reading books a close friend handed in to me (Oxford tree etc) but tbh as a teacher I hate reading them aloud to ds. Only hung on as she gave them to me. So- gone! It's liberating!

I think that is quite a revelation as my family (and friends) are notorious for handing things on/ down. And I'm sentimental about an object squared in that way.

We've also finally solved a non wardrobe issue in our bedroom (most of our clothes have been in ikea bags for a year now.) ikea algot system installed (very awkward space depth wise) and sliding doors tbc at a later date when we can be arsed. Like it as we can alter what shelves or hanging space we need. BUT it's going to help in the kondo way too I think as currently we can see everything. Not yet got to the proper clothing haul. But it will be a good starting point!

Clarella · 20/01/2016 14:48

Acquired not squared!

You might like this article from an economist explaining why Kondo works.

Thanks to removing 10 years of stuff from the spare room, my room is now full of almost all the komono we own. I'm giving various things up to a fortnight on Ebay/Gumtree before they get shoved outside for freecyclers/scrap merchant. Another bag of WEEE went today.

Doing paperwork with the 'help' of a 3yo is tricky though.

WhataRacquet · 21/01/2016 10:26

There's going to be a Kondo segment on This Morning today.

WhataRacquet · 21/01/2016 10:36

Phil and Holly are still drunk!

BonjourMinou · 21/01/2016 19:52

Oh my goodness. Watching on demand. This is hilarious!

SnozzberryMincePie · 21/01/2016 22:40

Hi all, I had a day at home with the baby, while he napped I went through my paperwork and toiletries and skincare. Chucked lots of things which were past their sell by dates or pregnancy related. This was quite an easy catrgory for me as most things had stayed organised after i did them last time. Next I need to do electronics which is a hard one as these are dp's domain
