Need to catch up with the thread since the new year but just wanted to say SQUEE my copy of "Spark Joy" was delivered this morning, and it's so cute! It's a really tidy, joyful little book, with a little elastic around it as well to keep it neat. Of course we should expect nothing less from MK!

I look forward to digesting it over the weekend for Kondo reboot inspiration :)

Zippidydoodah · 08/01/2016 13:45

Hehe, our flour and other baking bits and bobs are in some plastic cereal dispensers with lids off (in their bags, still) as I REALLY couldn't be arsed with pouring boxes of cereal into the dispensers- seemed like a good idea at the time!!

Mississippi my kitchen is tiny. The best space saving thing I have is a hanging rack for pans from ikea. I also have my mugs hanging from hooks. My tupperware is a mess, I think I need Stackable tupperware, like this www.amazon.co.uk/Clear-Containers-Multi-Coloured-Lids/dp/B009DFGGQK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1452277438&sr=8-1&keywords=stackable+tupperware

Hi to all on the thread, I remember feeling inspired by the kondo-ing lark about a year ago post Xmas & funnily enough find myself lurking & contemplating again....having done nothing about it yet! can you convince me this is the way forward, how do you feel it improves your life? I really can't imagine myself carefully folding my underwear neatly into draws, I'm just not that kinda person. But, I do often get a sense of having an overwhelming amount of stuff & I'm not as organised as I could be. And Is it really possible to do and maintain with two small children?!? Thank you kind people

building2016 · 08/01/2016 20:01

My DD has just taken all the things she said she would get rid of and put them back in her room. Sobbing hysterically most nights this week about some shirty bouncy ball or whatever. She knows she is being ridiculous.

Leeloo2 · 08/01/2016 20:58

Apologies as I haven't rtwft, but I'm back on the Kondo-ing, after life got in the way for a while. Here (hopefully) are photos of my cupboard post dvd cull and of the pile of dvds that were culled. And yes that is actual space in the next door cupboard! :-)

Oh and the new book came in the post today and it's beautiful. I have the first on Kindle and always regretted it as I find it hard to find bits I want to re-read, so am glad to have this in paper form and so far it's a good read. :-)

Seasalt, I'll leave others to answer you on the children front, but just wanted to say that I never thought I'd be consistently folding underwear either, and now my underwear drawer honestly is something that gives me a little buzz of satisfaction every day. I know that everything in it is nice, no holey socks or saggy grundies, because they didn't spark joy so they were out. I can see everything in the drawer all neatly filed, it looks pretty, I can grab what I want easily without having to root through it, and when putting clean laundry away it honestly takes no time to quickly fold and slot things back into their places. It's an absence of stress when I never realised it was something that really was stressful in the first place, and that goes for everything that I've kondo'd so far. The kondo way of thinking has filtered past just tidying & organising my belongings into a refreshed philosophy on cleaning & housekeeping in general, as well as how I acquire new stuff, how I take care of myself & how I plan my time. Before my flat felt overwhelming and that I was always trying to catch up with myself, now it's relaxing and calm, and I'm gradually becoming much more organised overall, step at a time.

Try it! What have you got to lose Smile

seasaltbaby · 08/01/2016 22:47

Thank you bubs, that's really inspiring & good to hear. I have actually spent the evening clearing out my bedroom draws & then looked up her folding method and oh my god! The results are amazing! I can understand why you get that buzz everyday! It's also made me realise the dire state of affairs of my socks & knickers SadHowever I do remain skeptical as to whether I can take on our whole house & keeping it up, seems v overwhelming...

Allgunsblazing · 09/01/2016 07:25

leeloo, is that Spirited Away that I see on the top of your pile?
Do you have any Ghibli studios movies you're getting rid of? (Looks amazingly tidy, btw).

Leeloo2 · 09/01/2016 08:12

I'm sorry AllGuns, it was spirited away - for some reason I had a box set of almost all studio ghibli, plus about 5 duplicate films Confused. I'd never realised as I'd never had them all out together! I also found 3 series of a boxset I thought I'd culled years ago but had actually only given away the first 2 series?! But, in my determination to clear out I took the whole pile to the charity shop on the way to the school run (my poor toddler had to walk just after her nap as her buggy was filled with dvds.

I think there was spirited away, the cat returns, my neighbour totoro and Kikis delivery service - if there are any you really want then I can go to the charity shop and see if they can find them -it's a v small local one so I doubt they've been sold. Or, as I haven't watched the box set in about 6 years then if I don't watch it soon you can have that. :)

SnozzberryMincePie · 09/01/2016 09:07

Last time I kondoed I got rid of all cds and dvds and just copied them onto my pc (with a backup on a hard drive in case my computer dies). We still have lots of books and records everywhere but books and records are ime nice objects in themselves whereas cds and dvds aren't.

A few more have crept in since as they have been bought and given as presents and it seemed wrong to get rid of them straight away. They will be going this time!

99percentchocolate · 09/01/2016 11:01

I've kondoed a little this week and have so far managed to completely clear out the bottom of DD's wardrobe. It was packed full before. Have also made £7 this week selling rubbish on Facebook and have gotten rid of so many books that the cupboard they were stored in is now going to be our new TV stand. This means that not only can I get rid of old TV stand, but also the crappy dvd bookcase as the DVDs will now go in the cupboard. A very good start I think!

99percentchocolate · 09/01/2016 11:02

Somebody mentioned an app where you could sell books too? Could I be a pain and ask for the name of this please?

Allgunsblazing · 09/01/2016 11:07

99, the app is ziffit :)
leeloo, please don't go back to the charity shop, too much trouble and someone else might discover those amazing movies :)
But do keep me in mind if you want to get rid of the box set later on, happy to buy them off you :)

99percentchocolate · 09/01/2016 11:40

Thank you allguns!

britnay · 10/01/2016 14:48

I'm reading it now. We moved house in July, so I had already got rid of a load of clothes that didn't fit/books/baby stuff etc. I probably took around 3 car loads to local charity shops and 2 to the skip. I guess that sorted out the bulk of my clutter.

I still have a 10-month old baby and am not where I want to be physically at the moment (starting fitness pilates on Wednesday! :D ) and my limited wardrobe is just functional at the moment so nothing really sparks joy, but if i got rid of things that don't spark joy then I'd literally have nothing to wear apart from a few dresses, which are not practical at the moment! So I'll fold what I have and hold off on replacing them with "joyful" clothing until I am a bit more in shape! I'm looking to start with clothes in around 6 months time.

Instead, I've started with cosmetics and have already chucked out a whole load of makeup that will be out of date as I hardly ever wear any at the moment (2 small children and no social life!). So cosmetics/skincare is down to two small drawers. I'm also going to spend next week painting my nails in each colour of nail varnish that I own and decide which ones look good when they are on. I'm hoping to pare them down to 1/3 and put them in with the cosmetics.

I have a few things that are non-negotiable and take up quite a lot of room. Books and art/craft material! I do have a kindle and use it a lot. However I love the feel and smell of a book, so I tend to purchase physical copies of my favourites and will re-read them every few years.

LexLoofah · 10/01/2016 16:55

charging cables done! in the end I re-purposed the inside of DSs lego advent calendar, such useful decent sized compartments, used the other half to categorize and organize DDs hair clips, hair bands etc

airing cupboard also done, didn't throw anything but folded and rolled bedding and towels and now have half free to store other stuff when before it was crammed fit to bursting and I hated even opening it

educatingarti · 10/01/2016 21:06

Shoe joy! Storage made from hymn book pockets salvaged from broken chairs that were being thrown away at church!

Cloche · 10/01/2016 21:30

I have 41 pairs of knickers. All neat and tidy but I'm a bit shocked by the number.

Cloche · 10/01/2016 21:31

Educating, that is genius! Looks great. :)

BubsandMoo · 10/01/2016 22:44

Educating that is lovely, very Kondo with the vertical storage as well :)

Cloche that sounds about right to me! I have 2 pairs to match each bra (about 12 bras I think) plus about 15 black mini shorts for period days/pyjamas/exercise etc. As long as they're all joyful knickers Grin!

Zippidydoodah · 11/01/2016 00:09

Bubs- 12 bras?! I only have about 5 that fit!

BubsandMoo · 11/01/2016 00:26

I like bras! They're an indulgence. I actually feel I should have a few more. They're arranged in rainbow order with their matching knickers Blush

They have their own seperate delicates laundry basket too (ok, they sometimes share it with wool things) and I have little mesh bags the bras snuggle in to go in the machine.

It's a weird little obsession and I don't care Grin

Zippidydoodah · 11/01/2016 14:14

It is on my plan to get some better bras after I've lost my weight! I love the idea of matching knickers too. Now my youngest of three kids is 2, I feel that this year is the year I get "myself" back! New bras and new clothes that spark joy! Smile

crankyagnes · 11/01/2016 20:16

Like seasalt and others, I've been reading these threads since the beginning, and have been meaning to get started ever since - so new year, DC back to school, it's time to bite the bullet and make a start!

Hopefully I'll be back soon with something to report Grin

On a procrastinating note, though, I've decided to treat myself to her second book as well, to help keep me motivated, so possibly I shall stall again once that arrives Wink
