Do you have a sheet underneath your duvet? Have I been making a bed wrong all these years?

So I'm looking for bedding for DS2 who is having a new bed delivered on saturday. The pictures all show a fitted sheet (or tucked in flat sheet). Then a sheet and then a duvet (in a duvet cover of course). Then often a throw or quilted "comforter" on top.

I've never put a flat sheet between me and the duvet. Have I been doing it wrong all these years? Confused

I never did but do now because DH prefers it.

meglet · 08/03/2015 21:06

no extra sheets here.

dementedpixie · 08/03/2015 21:06

no we don't have one

eurochick · 08/03/2015 21:06

I never have.

MrsBungle · 08/03/2015 21:07

No but my mum and granny always did.

RitaOrange · 08/03/2015 21:07

My DF does this so she only has to change the sheets and pillow cases each week.

Duvet is only changed once a month.

pieceofpurplesky · 08/03/2015 21:07

I do

Snooksbury · 08/03/2015 21:07

Personal preference: you need to ask your DS. I personally feel the additional sheet just tangles up and gets in the way, but do like an additional blanket on top of the duvet to add to the snuggliness.

Archer26 · 08/03/2015 21:08

I'm confused? Do you sleep right on top on mattress with no sheeting between?

I've always had a sheet and also sometimes a padded mattress cover in between.

Moresproutsplease · 08/03/2015 21:08

I don't, but think I might in summer so I can throw off the duvet but still have something covering me.

Unidentifieditem · 08/03/2015 21:08

MIL does this. It's just another thing to tangle up, end up creased, need washing and ironing. No thanks

GemmaTeller · 08/03/2015 21:09

Quilted mattress protector
Flannel bottom sheet
Duvet
Quilted throw
Fleece blanket on my side

Bolster
Three pillows each

We love our bed, its so comfy cosy Grin

Carpetcrawler · 08/03/2015 21:09

No , I would end up all tangled up in it.

TendonQueen · 08/03/2015 21:09

Yes, I know people who do it to minimise duvet cover changing. For me though it spoils the pleasure of snuggling down under your nice cosy duvet because the sheets don't hold warmth as well IMHO. Shops show it in pictures because that way you'll buy extra sheets as well as the duvet set. Hmm

MrsLettuce · 08/03/2015 21:09

It's a throwback to when we used sheets and blankets, you needed a seet between you and the blankets.

People selling bed linen are, of course, keen to sell as much as possible. That too.

Pantone363 · 08/03/2015 21:09

Um. Yes of course Hmm. Maybe I've been doing it wrong?!

Fitted sheet, then flat sheet, then quilt.

We don't have a duvet.

MaCosta · 08/03/2015 21:10

Archer no I mean mattress, mattress cover, sheet to sleep on top of and then sheet and duvet on top

Fatstacks · 08/03/2015 21:10

I always did but DP is a nester so it was more trouble.
In summer I have one over the duvet so I can sleep under that.

LoveVintage · 08/03/2015 21:11

No. It's enough of a faff changing the bed without add another sheet into the mix.

Pantone363 · 08/03/2015 21:11

But my DM was snobby about beds. Duvets were for people who didn't know how to make beds properly. We had to make our own beds and DM had no compunction at waking us in the middle of the night if we had skipped the fitted sheet and slept on the mattress! We had to get up and remake it

Bluepants · 08/03/2015 21:12

It's to avoid washing duvet covers etc I think.

MrsPnut · 08/03/2015 21:13

No, it hate the feeling of being hemmed in.

I do have a duvet and then a quilt over the top during the winter too.
Dd2 sleeps with about 4 blankets, a duvet and a quilt but then she likes to sleep naked.

BackforGood · 08/03/2015 21:13

Another no here.

Archer i think we are saying mattress with sheet on it, then your body....we're assuming everyone does that. The debate is, if you then have a sheet on top of you, underneath the quilt.

DramaAlpaca · 08/03/2015 21:13

I have a sheet under the duvet because I get overheated (dratted menopause) and I like to be able to push the duvet away but still be covered by the sheet.

The DC just have their duvets, no extra sheet.

ginmakesitallok · 08/03/2015 21:14

Always did as a child, but haven't used a top sheet in over 20 years. Sometimes a bit sad that my kids with never know the joy of being "tucked in".
