I agree with the Harpic posts - works like a charm. I had a horrible loo till I tried it. Looked like something off 'How Clean is Your House' . Harpic Duck flushable toiletbrush wipes are also brilliat for regualr cleaning to repvent limescale once the harpic liquid has done it's thing!

pesha · 26/10/2006 22:01

Dp works making cider and brings me little bottles of liquid citric acid and it works brilliantly, much better than anything ive ever bought. Have lovely shiny clean toilet now!!

He also brings me very cheap bottles of very nice wine, love dps job

batinshoes · 27/10/2006 08:45

thanks for this post. i have the same problem so will get some harpic and try that...

satine · 27/10/2006 08:55

Must be something in the air, I was about to start a thread on exactly this subject! Thanks very much, I knew you wise women would be able to help!

staceym11 · 27/10/2006 09:46

the new harpic 100% limescale remover works wonders!!!!!

i got some and so did my mum, now her toilet bowls were yellow from the water line down due to limescale keeping the colour when my bro doesnt flush the toilet (men!!!) and after 2 applications it was perfectly white again! woudl def recommend it!

thankyoupoppet · 27/10/2006 09:48

have been totally inspired tto scrub my loo too!

(hi satine! r u online now? im having a wonderfully slobby time at my mums; faced with choices like -mumsnet? or nap?!)

Mumpbump · 27/10/2006 09:52

There is a product called ATAKA which you can buy in some hardware shops. It's a very strong acid - not environmentally friendly, but shifts limescale like you wouldn't believe. My dad used to scoop out some of the water (clean!) from the toilet bowl so the limescale was exposed, paint it on with a brush and leave it for half an hour or so to work...

MissyBabee · 27/10/2006 14:00

i cannot believe this - just been to supermarket and the ONE thing i needed to get, namely the Harpic stuff (for my initial attempt at destroying this hideous limescale), the ONE thing i wanted at this present time, escaped my mind and i forgot all about it until i have got in and caught up with this thread!

AAAAaaaaarrrrrrgggggghhhhhhhh

Fabulous. We have this problem as in a v hard water area. We did get the plumber to put some acid down and that did the trick for a while, but it is coming back. We too contemplated getting a new loo (we are getting a water softener fitted so hopefully it would no longer be a problem). But getting a new loo is pretty extreme!
I shall try some of these things on here. I know Cillit Bang does bugger all though.

GODisGOOD · 27/10/2006 15:01

AS I AM GOD i know everything. cillit bang to do your crusty bits. then ordinary limescale remover for later.

castlesintheair · 27/10/2006 19:34

Full-fat coke or Viakal.

eastendgirl · 27/10/2006 21:10

white vinegar, and then go at it with a knife. really works, you will have to wash your hands after.

CorpseBride · 27/10/2006 22:21

Our downstairs loo, circa 1920, had taken a lot of XXXX and not much cleaning. Parazone Limescale remover (when all else had failed) got rid of all the yellow/brown crusty staining out of the water as well the hideousness beneath the surface...

I shudder to remember it. Bleurghhhhhhhhh!

I remember watching How clean is your House? and they said to get a pumice stone and gently rub it off.
I tried this and it works.

bluejelly · 27/10/2006 22:34

Yes but must be so grim having to get that up close and personal with your toilet bowl, non?

Beauregard · 27/10/2006 22:37

Twas indeed but the marigolds helped a bit

Snowstorm · 27/10/2006 22:40

Spirit of Salts, from behind the counter at a chemists, no scrubbing involved, it's magic! It's also incredibly strong so you HAVE to make sure that the children are well out of the way until you have finished the procedure and that the room can be well ventilated while you are doing it.

The thought of any child getting their hands on this stuff makes my guts curdle though.

bluejelly · 27/10/2006 23:00

Off to go and put mine on an even higher shelf now-- didn't realise it was quite so caustic

MissyBabee · 28/10/2006 20:17

LOL californifright

pelvicfloor, do you know where to buy a pumice stone? might have to resort to this.

by the way, sent DH off with shopping list to get the week's groceries and forgot AGAIN to buy the stuff to sort the toilet out!!!!!!! FGS missy!!!!!!!!!!!!

thanks for all your help. i will let you know what works (i can definitely say full fat coke didn't work...)

satine · 28/10/2006 20:17

I thought I'd start with the Harpic and then move on to the spirit of salts - but the Harpic has done it! And in only half an hour (with a bit of scrubbing with a scourer). Incredible! My loo is white again!

Thanks ladies!

MissyBabee · 28/10/2006 20:19

ooh, fantastic! that's where I will start (when i remember to buy the bloody stuff ).

Soak clods of loo roll in vinegar then splat them onto affected area overnight. Repeat for a second night if necessary. You should then be able to scrape it off with a scourer and good old fashioned elbow grease.
