induction hob - yes or no?

Have had a gas hob all my cooking life (!) but along with new kitchen I'm considering taking a leap and going for the induction option. Any advice/recommendations please? Smile

Yes, go for an induction hob. I have a cooker with induction hob from AEG and it has been wonderful - really responsive and so easy to clean compared with the cooker. Had it 2 years so far without problems (though it is worth getting a longer term warranty as I would imagine repairs might be expensive)

Yes ! Agree with all above. I have a Rangemaster and its fab. Wouldn't want anything else now.

Yes, I have a Neff one, love it.
Takes some getting used to as the top temperature is very fierce.

I loved mine before I had to move - the only downside is that you need pans made of iron or other magnetic material and they tend to be more expensive.

Induction all the way, they are brilliant. I wouldn't use anything else now. You won't regret it.

I've been wondering a similar thing. My questions would be:

a) How responsive is it compared to gas? (Exactly the same as gas, or just better than electric)

b) How good is its lowest temperature? I need very low heat a lot more often than fierce.

My dps have one and it's amazing! They now use a stove top kettle instead of an electric one as it boils quicker! It's like magic - I can never believe how quick it heats up and cools down.

marigold to answer your questions

A. I think it is more responsive than gas.
B. I find the lowest setting really gentle. Mine goes from 0-9 and I simmer my veg on a 3 usually.

Watching with interest as we have been thinking the same thing. Do you need a separate power supply for the hob, as you do for an electric oven?
Also we frequently cook using a wok and assume an induction hob is not as effective as a gas hob.

Ooh, this interests me as we will shortly be replacing our gas oven.

Have any of you found that an induction hub is expensive to run? Compared to a gas or normal electric hob.

OP, looking at changing from gas to induction too. I lived in a rental a couple of years ago which had one and it was Adam to clean. I don't remember the cooking on it, I think I just had to get used to it iyswim.

cogito do you know which make your parents' hob is by any chance? It sounds grand!

Also, I have heard ikea induction hobs are not bad,can anyone confirm?

We've had a Neff induction job for 10 years. I love it. It's so easy to clean and just as responsive as a gas job. Would hate to go back to gas now. I don't use a wok on it but do stir frys in a large frying pan.

Another yes here. I'm very proud of it being able to bring a large pan of water to boil in a matter of about 2 mins, as if I created the technology myself Grin

And the cleaning is as easy as cleaning your normal work surface.

I have a Siemens induction hob which has probably taken me about a year to be fully happy with despite cooking everyday. We eat a lot of stir fries so I looked into woks & decided to get a separate gas ring from the same range. The hob is easy to clean. My newer pans work on it but those I bought 28 years ago don't (gosh that makes me realise how old I am).

I absolute LOVE mine - so easy to clean, so responsive Smile
It is a Miele and previously I had a six burner gas hob (PITA to clean/keep clean!)

Much easier to regulate than gas. My pil had gas, trying to get it v low was such a pain, it would go out and then have to faff about reigniting the flame. My induction hib is so gentle I can melt chocolate in a pan directly on the hob not need bain marie.

My sil has got one and it beeps and switches off at the slightest spill. Drives her nuts. And she's got a v. £££ one. Can't remember what make mine is but it's brilliant.

I love my new induction hob and I 'd had gas for 35 years! It's great for really low temperature cooking - I used find I couldn't get the gas hob to go low enough on simmer due to the limiters they put on the controls Mk1 is great for simmering. I've got a Neff with lovely free German pans.

A question for all you long time induction hob owners - is your hob scratched? If no, how have you stopped it happening? If yes, can you do anything about it? I noticed I have a very fine scratch on mine already and I have no idea how it got thereSad Luckily it's not at all noticeable - only to me and my beady eyes.
