Hoovers... I know it's been done but please help!

My old trusty Dyson died last year. I bought a Vax. It sucks - actually, it doesn't, and that's the problem! I'm developing ingrained dust in the carpet Blush and only a hand brush is getting it out.

I prefer upright, but that's possibly because my DM had a hatred of anything else as she said the suction was terrible. I suspect things have changed!

So, please give me your recommendations for hoovers that can lift the carpet!

I have a Miele which is fab. I also had a Vax and it was a big pile of shit. Before getting the Miele I always thought I only liked uprights but now I'd never go back. My MIL has had her Miele for 20+ years and it's still going strong Grin

AlpacaLypse · 06/02/2015 11:27

Henry.

These threads always go the same way Smile - a load of people will go 'Dyson', another load will scream 'Dyson - nooooo! - get a Miele!' and then several others (like me) will say 'Get a Henry, will last forever and costs a lot less than a swanky one'.

crazypenguin · 06/02/2015 11:28

Henry!!! Grin

AlmaMartyr · 06/02/2015 11:36

I have a Henry and it's great. Had two Dysons before and hated them both. Would have bought a Miele but Henry loads cheaper and suction is great.

UncrushedParsley · 06/02/2015 11:39

Never had a Miele but have a wonderful Miele washing machine. This brand usually come out top, or very near in Which reports. Love my Sebo though.

bilbodog · 06/02/2015 11:57

Henry - after using all sorts of others over the past few years - just does what it says on the box - sucks up dirt. Nothing to get stuck/trapped or broken. HENRY!!!!

BrassicaBabe · 06/02/2015 12:01

I've had 3 Mieles die in 6 years. When the last one died I bought a Henry!

FestiveRoad · 06/02/2015 12:07

I'm tempted to get a Sebo. Which one do you have UncrushedParsley?

UncrushedParsley · 06/02/2015 12:10

Anti-allergy X5 Festive. Have had it yonks.

PolyplaxSerrata · 06/02/2015 12:11

We got a Bosch Athlet about 6 weeks ago. It's cordless and gets so much dust and hair out of our carpets. ( We have 4 kids, 2 dogs and 2 cats) One charge does our 4 bedroom house ( mainly carpet) but it does need to be emptied between floors.
It's upright and very light; I'd recommend.

CarpeJugulum · 06/02/2015 12:42

So... Miele, Henry, Dyson with a rogue Bosch and Sebo.

Hmm. So, cylinders are just as good as uprights then?

Does suction watts matter?

Thanks UncrushedParsley. Will check it out.

ThreeQuartersEmpty · 06/02/2015 13:01

Roomba. It hoovers for you, whats not to like about that?

CarpeJugulum · 06/02/2015 14:45

Tempted by the Roomba, but I suspect it couldn't cope with manoeuvring round Lego/trains and other assorted junk!

Seriously considering a Miele now, but which one? Suspect Cat&Dog, but there are a couple of variations.

Buy an upright dyson. They do their job well and last a lifetime.

But you will know that if you had one already?!

CarpeJugulum · 06/02/2015 14:54

Yes. However, I've heard that the quality has gone down so I'm a bit wary. Tbf, it did last 13 years so I may have been a bit spoiled!

A SEBO is the answer - the X4extra, I've had mine 2 years and I love it! Sturdy German craftsmanship, bags that take ages to fill (I prefer bagged - much cleaner to empty), and almost powerdriven. Not the cheapest option, but if you like uprights, this is THE one!

whattodoforthebest2 · 06/02/2015 17:27

Another Sebo fan - the K1 Komfort.

PolyplaxSerrata · 06/02/2015 18:29

I've had two cat and dogs( Miele) now and they've both died at the 4 year mark :(

Henry all the way

BuzzardBird · 06/02/2015 19:03

Henry, recommended by builder who uses it for sucking up all sorts of crap. Mine gets a real pounding and is doing the job excellently.

4yoniD · 07/02/2015 16:28

I had a miele cat and dog and it was really rather average. Replaced with a Dyson which was slightly better. Thinking about a Henry....

EmGee · 07/02/2015 20:57

I have a Henry but I do not like it much - awfully heavy to lug around, gets tangled up in its cord, topples over. I am always swearing at it!!

That said, you can give it dog's abuse and it just goes on and on. I think mine will live forever. It's indestructible but I am sure vacuuming with a Dyson would be a more pleasant experience!

rabbit123 · 08/02/2015 15:18

Some facts.

  • cylinders generate more suction than uprights because they're traditionally suction only and need the extra power. Uprights generally have less suction because they have a rotating brushroll so don't need to suck as much.

Uprights and cylinders with turbo brushes are better for carpets whereas suction only is better for bare floors. So if you have mixed floortypes, you're best off with either a cylinder with an optional turbobrush or an upright with a brushroll on/off function.

Bagged vacuums are usually more reliable as theres less to go wrong and they're certainly more hygienic than bagless. Much better for anyone with allergies.

We have a Sebo X4 Pet upright downstairs and a Miele C3 Cat & Dog for upstairs. Both are excellent.
