What don't you put in your dishwasher?

Despite having a perfectly good dishwasher I find myself doing loads of dishes in the sink. The dishwasher instructions say not to put any wood or non-dishwasher safe plastic items in it which means that choopping boards, wooden spoons, sharp knives with plastic handles, tupperware, etc are out. I also don't put in any oven/ baking trays as they seem to make everything else greasy/ dirty and get rusty. Nor do I put in baby bottles, sippy cups, children's melamine bowls/ plates or cutlery, frosted glasses or any with pictures on in case they come off. Can any of these things safely go in it? What about utensils for non-stick pans - nylon I think?

teh cat

Bagpuss30 · 20/10/2006 16:27

I put most things in apart from spill proof cups for ds2 (15 months) and also his melamine plate and bowl because the varnish and pattern can crack and come off (happened before). Oh, also my global kitchen knives and my potato ricer as I don't think they are supposed to go in.

TheDaVinciCod · 20/10/2006 16:28

kids lunchboxes

woodern stuff

The only thing I don't put in is the wok, everything else is just shoved in regardless.

Bagpuss30 · 20/10/2006 16:28

what do you have left to put in nicemummy?

just a couple of spoons?

melamine bowls no problem. Cinderella still looks fine and she's been having regular dips for a year now

zippitippitoes · 20/10/2006 16:36

my mum used to do what you do and of course make sure everything was clean that she did put in !!!!

KellyKrueger1978 · 20/10/2006 16:37

dishes!
I have given up on mine. Fed up with having to rewash stuff.

NYceMummy · 20/10/2006 16:38

Basically just the standard cutlery, crockery, glasses and pots and pans, Cappuccino! It still fills up pretty quickly

I put all those things in too...just put them on the top shelf if I'm not sure

BlackCatBert · 20/10/2006 16:59

Your wooden chopping boards will split eventually in the dishwasher. But who cares I say.

I put my sharp knives in (but pointy ends down) and I sharpen them on a regular basis anyway.

I put bottles in, but bought one of those groovy plastic bottle washer things, so you could stick the teats in the top and "bits" in the bottom, to keep them all the right way up.

I have a 3 part Maws sippy cup, which consists of cup, screw top and valve. The valve even has a small hole for the purpose, to slip onto a spare diswasher rack.

Plastic and Melamine has never suffered, apart from the time DD1 put a black crayon into the washing machine which proceeded to melt, be sprayed over everything, and baked onto the plastic items during the drying cycle (but not onto anything else weirdly)... All had to be chucked.

I even wash my wedgewood dinner service in it - cause it only comes out a few times a year, and frankly, life is too short.

MrsFish · 20/10/2006 20:33

I wash up all of what you said in initial post NYceMummy, the rest goes in dishwasher.I know what you mean though, it feels like I am constantly washing up

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 20/10/2006 20:35

only things that don't go in mine are my Wok and my wooden spoons., and DS's lunchbox (as the picture started fading pdq and he wasn't happy). Everything else goes in!

mrsflowerpot · 20/10/2006 20:36

Nothing wooden, including stupid le creuset pans with stupid wooden handles (although they are on their way out anyway as I keep setting fire to the handles with the gas burners ).

Generally I bung in pretty much everything else, except v small plastic boxes as they always tip over and fill up with water.

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 20/10/2006 20:36

oh actually - I lied I don't put my baking tins (because they're cheap and nasty and rust if I do ) or my really big (rectangle) casserole dish........as it's too big - only have a 'slim' dishwasher.

Surfermummystomb · 20/10/2006 20:36

Saucepans and baking trays. Other than than everything.

NYceMummy · 20/10/2006 22:10

Yay MrsFish - someone else!

OP posts:
MrsBadger · 20/10/2006 22:16

not sharp knives (they seem to get blunt quicker and there's only so much sharpening I can be arsed to do)
not the best nonstickiest pans (because we always need them before the dishwasher is run)
not the breadboard (cos it doesn't fit)

everything else goes in - we specifically have tupperware, glasses etc that dishwash and wooden stuff etc has to take its chance.
