The Book: The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing by Marie Kondo, Cathy Hirano

Summary of the process link from mipmop

Article of top tips by Marie Kondo

Thread 5
Thread 4
Thread 3
Thread 2
Thread 1

And BeCool's copy of Coughles list of ORDER from Thread 2 for everyone:

"ORDER TO DECLUTTER/LOCATE THE JOY*

Clothes folding by rummy
Books
Papers
CDs
DVDs
Skincare products
Make-up
Accessories
Valuables (passports, credit cards, etc.)
Electrical equipment and appliances (digital cameras, electric cords, anything that seems vaguely ‘electric’)
Household equipment (stationery and writing materials, sewing kits, etc.)
Household supplies (expendables like medicine, detergents, tissues, etc.)
Kitchen goods/ food supplies
Other (If you have many items related to a particular interest or hobby, such as ski equipment, then treat these as a single subcategory.)

KonMari stresses that sentimental items should be left till the end. So for example, when you are doing papers, don't include photos of your children, love letters, old school reports etc, leave anything with a sentimental connection for later."

*As discussed in previous threads, your order for decluttering and finding the joy/spark/recognizing may be different to recommendations.

I am giving some of DDs old clothes to a friends daughter - in return she is gvings her DS's old clothes to my DS. Not sure that's proper Kondo, but at least clothes is being put to use, and I guess we are helping each other.

Got more ebay listings done, finally. It's not selling for much, and I'm a bit torn as it's a lot of effort, but I am pleased that things I don't need are finding good homes. I guess it's good that other people are saving money ;)

Zippidydoodah · 03/02/2015 10:24

Thank you for the advice re: bedding! Can't really afford to buy another set but I'm worried about one of the kids throwing up in our bed or something! Think I'll take the risk though (eek! Living on the edge!)

I'm very interested in all the teacher talk on here. Part of me thinks I've got a good thing having a part time teaching job, but part of me hates and resents it. Hmm....

I think it's a great idea to swap kids' clothes! Good for the environment too Smile

Good luck for going back to work, pointlessFlowers

Zippidydoodah · 03/02/2015 10:25

I have kondoed my clothes twice, and feel that I could do more! It is so true when I say I haven't anything to wear! Nothing fits or brings me joy. Plus I want to lose a stone before buying anything new....

misscph1973 · 03/02/2015 11:03

Zippi, I get like that at times with my clothes, I don't think even Kondoing will solve that ;) I have kept things that doesn't bring me joy, but I do have to have some clothes to wear. I am really picky with clothes, but I also lose patience when shopping really quickly. And I don't want to spend the money either ;) I try to say to myself I have to focus on who I am now, although I have kept one pair of jeans that are a bit tight, hoping I will lose a little bit of weight.

I often buy clothes in charity shops and on ebay - if it's cheap, the risk isn't so high, and it's easier to part with if it doesn't work out. Perhaps you could do similar?

SJH0604 · 03/02/2015 11:25

What does kondo stand for, please?

SJH0604 · 03/02/2015 11:27

Lizertorte, which book are you referring to?

LaurieFairyCake · 03/02/2015 11:31

Read the opening post and click on the links - it's Marie Kondo, the woman who wrote a book about getting rid of things and tidying for good

Smile

Meant to put a smiley face - or it sounds dead bossy !

APlaceOnTheCouch · 03/02/2015 11:43

zippy I was just thinking this morning that I feel as though I'm constantly Kondoing clothes. After each wash, I find myself Kondoing my clothes again. It almost feels as though it's a constant circle. I guess this is why it takes six months.

LinzerTorte · 03/02/2015 11:59

SJH Marie Kondo's second book, which has just been translated into German - it came out here last month, I think, and is called Magic Cleaning. Hmm As is, indeed, the first book; they just have different subtitles. Book 2 is subtitled "How to keep your flat and soul tidy" (in German).

Was hoping to make a start on household equipment today - I have a ridiculous amount of stationery - as DH has taken the DC skiing for the day, but work has suddenly got annoyingly (from a kondoing point of view!) busy.

lockie1983 · 03/02/2015 12:34

miss do you love it as much if it's cheap though? Is it bringing joy or does the "having something new to you" fake that joyous feeling only for it to fade out (and then you get rid) ? Sorry that's a bit philisophical, but is something I am wondering as I am similar.

On other news (or perhaps related) my pink trainers have arrived and they are honestly the most beautiful trainers I've ever seen (or owned). I am really please I spent the money on them. Even though it took me a whole week to decide.

misscph1973 · 03/02/2015 13:07

lockie,

I love a good bargain, so yes, if something was cheap (or even better, free!), then I love it even more ;) I find it hard to buy expensive things for myself, I feel guilty and that the money could have been better spent on something else. I think periods of being really skint in the past and worrying about bills was actually kind of traumatic for me.

Your pink trainers sound great, good for you! I kondoed my low top Converse as they were really worn, and I don't find Converse comfortable anymore. I am looking to buy a pair of Rocket Dog Jazzin for my ebay money instead!

lockie1983 · 03/02/2015 14:16

oooh nice. I Kondoed my silver leather converse as they pinched my feet. Lovely to look at but so uncomfortable. My feel aren't made for cons anymore !

90s is back "in", you know! That top wouldn't look out of place in primark at the moment! Grin

Iqueen · 03/02/2015 14:51

OMG - dropped shoulders! I like 'vintage' patterns from the 1960s. Even earlier ones look good too, but I can't see my bust ever being 34-36in again! Sad

I've got a fabulous knit coat from the 1980s (power-dressing a la Dallas!) but have yet to figure out how/if to alter the massive padded shoulders. It is trying out a chazzer sack at the moment! Grin

Pointlessfan · 03/02/2015 15:06

Love the knitting pattern bring - how retro!
I just came across this on Pinterest and thought I'd share:

www.glamumous.co.uk/2013/03/101-household-tips-for-every-room-in.html

Some ideas we've all discussed before but some are new. I like the cup cake cases in the glass jar - they look so pretty!

lockie1983 · 03/02/2015 16:17

LOVE old knitting patterns bring - they are my nemises and are currently sitting in a drawer of "sentimentals" to be Kondoed. Most were my nans.

I love that jumper, it is so insane but could be impossibly cute if styled right (ok, so I'm a bit wacky ...)

lockie1983 · 03/02/2015 16:19

pointless I feel all angelic again as my cupcake cases are stored like that :)

TimeGoesBy · 03/02/2015 16:56

Bring, one word for that jumper... SnazzyGrin
Love all those kind of tips things pointless, the one for stuffed peppers is from the mind of a genius!

APlaceOnTheCouch · 03/02/2015 18:15

Thanks for the list Pointless . I have to agree with TimeGoesBy that the stuffed pepper one is great and so simple that it makes you think why did I never think of that before?

HermioneGrangerHair · 03/02/2015 18:27

Ouch, Bringme... That jumper! Do the arrows show the direction of folding of something?

Reminds me of this, for the seamstresses among you: www.blogforbettersewing.com/2009/11/most-awesomely-bad-pattern-finalists.html

HearMyRoar · 03/02/2015 19:32

I got a new shredder today. Sooooo exciting! Grin

Have been happily shredding a box full of paperwork. Simple pleasures.

HazyShadeOfWinter · 03/02/2015 21:00

Roar I am Envy, we had a shredder that broke and we can't replace it so I send my DH with folders of paper to shred at work.

bringme if you weren't aren't keeping that I reckon you'd be able to sell that pattern on Ebay - certainly I see loads of similar ones on Etsy, though I think you need a proper shop/account to sell on that site.

Feeling overwhelmed still, so much to do which isn't kondo), and trying to balance spare time between kondoing, sleeping and cuddling DS2 who is at the super cute fat gurgly baby stage. YEsterday took a bag to chazza (12 so far this year :) ) and posted two parcels to give and make up. Today kondoed a bag of wrapping paper and then used that bag to store some sentimental cards etc which will wait til am feeling more confident. So not great kondo progress, but progress nonetheless. Keep inspiring me with your achievements!
