Mango

sorry my post was a bit abrupt. ...did not mean it to be . Remember that this is a process that tales time.

Hubb · 19/01/2015 12:15

Argh I'm child proofing at the mo as DS is now very mobile, so I'm adding stuff to our space like gates and fire guards...quite annoying but has to be done.

Am slowly slowly getting there, still filling up bags for the Chazza (ipad auto capitalises Chazza!) and DH has been added a couple of things here and there. Not enough but hopefully he will be more on board eventually.

drawers staying tidy and after it's done it is more effort to go back to the old way than continuing!

Need to do some major work on the kitchen and do my most hated job of cleaning the kitchen floor and skirting boards :(

Everstrong · 19/01/2015 12:27

Welcome apple and Haiawaka

Haven't done much de-cluttering today, focussing on having fun with DD instead. She's napping now so I am having a cuppa and catch up on MN.

So happy that things are staying tidy- it's so much easier to access things when you know where they are. For example, DH went to bed early the other night as he was poorly. When I went up to bed I managed to find my PJs, put my moisturiser in and tie my hair back all without putting the light on or tripping over a stray shoe left down the side of the bed it's slso making the morning routine lots easier.

Still haven't Kondoed towels- why do I have such a sticking point here?! I don't want to get rid of any yet several don't bring me joy and we have way too many!

APlaceOnTheCouch · 19/01/2015 12:41

why do I have such a sticking point here?
I was lying in bed last night asking myself that very question about the komono corner in the living room. I didn't come up with any answers!

But, it's odd that my most public room looks like a tip. Ds' bedroom is tidy. The dressing room is tidy. The kitchen is slowly getting there and the utility room was one of the first areas that seemed to come together.

I'm telling myself that I'm going to tackle the komono corner of doom this evening . . .but I'm not entirely sure that I will. I'm guessing MK would say it has some psychological significance. Perhaps I'm avoiding taking public responsibility for my life? Perhaps subconsciously I'm thinking if I tidy the sitting room then I'll have to actually make decisions about other areas of my life eg career. Whilst it's untidy I can procrastinate about making changes in other parts of my life. Meh! I don't know.

Kondoed one of the kitchen cupboards this morning whilst kids eating brekkie! Am binning at least a dozen old school water bottles, why did I keep them?! Blush Had my first post clothing kondo moment today, when I was able to choose from a small but decent selection of sports clothing for my exercise class Grin

MangoBiscuit · 19/01/2015 13:28

homeaway not abrupt, concise! Grin The stuff in the crates is tricky. One of them was filled before I started kondoing, so I'm not even sure what's in there. The other one is mainly DDs stuff, couple of bits of DHs, and a few craft bits. I need to kondo all the craft stuff, but there's a LOT of it, it will involve sub-categories, and I need some time to myself to go through it. I probably am being a bit impatient. Blush Perhaps I'll clear the crates, then keep one for craft stuff as it's found, and deal with the rest of the odds as they crop up. Not sure what to do with DHs odds though. Hmm

homeaway · 19/01/2015 14:11

Mango

Did you already do dd room ? Not sure how old she is ,but if you can get her to tell you what she wants to keep in the crate and get rid of the rest, or just put all the things in her crate away with their friends. Not strictly kondo but it might help if the stuff is with its friends and then you can really see if you /she wants to keep it. Leave the craft crate until you are ready to do crafts as it is a big category for you. Do you have an idea of where you are going to store craft stuff when you are finished?Tackle the junk crate, get rid of what you know you dont want and keep the rest until you are doing that category or put it with that catergory now, even if you sort it later.
. I think we all have some misc bits and bobs, but if you create a place where these things live in an organised way (take away boxes in my case ) then you will know where to find them when you need them. Smile

JKSLtd · 19/01/2015 16:14

I kondo-ed my hair - 10 inches off for charity Smile

It'll look awful im sure when I wash it and don't spend hours blow drying it! But wanting to do it for ages.

Did some more clothes - dd just has too many. Need another box for refuge already.

misscph1973 · 19/01/2015 16:42

Getting myself geared up for ebaying after filling the car with bags for charity.

Just did my toiletries again - I found nail vernish remover, but I don't own any nail varnish! So I had an empty a vanity bag that DH gave me years ago but it's not very practical, so that went as well. Now I only have a first aid bag, a drawer with toiletries and a shelf in the bathroom, all of which are neatly and vertically organised.

Going to tackle freezer while I cook. And tomorrow I will sneak into DSs room and go through a few under bed storage boxes.

lockie1983 · 19/01/2015 16:52

JKS. Very brave ! Short hair is liberating - all of those hours of blowdrying time are suddenly yours. Freedom.

Violettatrump · 19/01/2015 17:38

Well done everyone!

I've failed in the kondo sorting department today but managed to actually chazza 5 bags

I keep thinking there mustn't be much more to do ...

Pointlessfan · 19/01/2015 18:22

JKS that's really brave, well done!
I've done stuff all today as I've felt really sick all day. Poor DH was meant to be working from home but spent 3 hours playing with DD while I slept. I have no idea what is wrong with me, but moving makes me nauseous so no kondoing today Sad

HermioneGrangerHair · 19/01/2015 18:54

Fascinating to see how everyone else is coming through the process. I felt like such a loser yesterday morning when I was struggling, but I guess a bit of internal strife here and there is par for the course... It's quite an upheaval. Whoever said the thread is helping them reflect on each stage hit the nail on the head.

No kondo here today, but I had a really great day in work... A bunch of disparate projects resolving themselves at the same time, and I was coordinating a small sub-team that just worked brilliantly together. If only it was like that every day! Anyway, it Might be my imagination, but I don't think I'd be feeling like that if the books were still barely started.

Starface · 19/01/2015 18:56

My DD has a fear of the new Shredder. It goes with her fear of hairdryers and blenders, and of me getting my haircut. I had to stop halfway through, no joke. Vacuum cleaners, however are a source of great joy Hmm

So I can only shred once she goes to sleep... Although it's quite noisy so we shall see...

MangoBiscuit · 19/01/2015 19:00

Damn, just lost the post I typed.

Thank you homeaway. DD1 is 5, have only kondo'd her clothes so far. (Have done DD2s toys, and the shared toys already) Wondering whether to kondo her toys and art/craft stuff with her (she'll want to keep EVERYTHING!), do it myself, or something in between. After reading the book, I'm very aware that I'll need to teach both DDs how to tidy as I realise I've had no idea all these years.

I did manage to empty the oldest of the 2 crates. Easy win as the bottom half turned out to be stuff I'd put aside to donate! I've started a much smaller "random craft stuff found as I kondo" box. It's on the main craft shelving unit, so will be with it's friends. :)

Well done JKS! How short is it now?

Get well soon Pointless.

homeaway · 19/01/2015 19:19

Mango,

You know what, your dd is already learning from you so I would not worry, once the process is finished she will know how to tidy as everything will have a place :). I would be tempted to do some kondo with her and get rid of anything that is broken or missing part, that should be easier.

Glad you are conquering the crates :)

JKSLtd · 19/01/2015 19:28

About chin length. The real test will be after I've washed it.

One friend said I'll get used to doing more blow drying?? I hardly ever use my hairdryer and just whack it up into a wet ponytail. Will have to see what to do without a ponytail now!

Nix143 · 19/01/2015 19:38

Oh you crazy Mumsnetters - I've lurked on here for YEARS.....and what finally brings me out of the dark? The fact that as I was making a pot of soup (frugal living/paying down my debts) I tackled the kitchen spice cupboard. And now it brings me joy LOL! So hello, hello. I'd been Kondoing for a few months without knowing I was doing it - reading this has rejuvinated me.

One question - I used a large tupperware box to put spices in - one for asian, one for others - what do I do with the lid????? It's the only large shallow tupperware I have that actually has a lid and I am loathe to throw it even though the box itself has been repurposed....... g'wan, what would you do with it? :)

Iqueen · 19/01/2015 19:44

Nix143 Rack it with your baking trays?

MangoBiscuit · 19/01/2015 19:46

JKS, I too have learnt to blow dry after I started growing out my pixie cut. I've now hit just long enough for a pony tail, well, less tail, more stub, but it's up! I actually got pretty fast at blow drying it, and managed to get it into a nice bob.

Welcome Nix! Some of mine have the lids under them, but I also have a place for lids who's boxes are in use, all stored on end. Until I have finished the entire house, I don't know what I'll need and what I won't, so I'm not throwing those until then.

nutsinwinter · 19/01/2015 19:52

bringme you can delete books/magazines/whatever from your actual Kindle account. You just need to log into the account on Amazon, go to 'My Content' and you'll see the possibilities. Let me know if you get stuck.

We have the charity shop coming for a pickup on Thursday so I need to have finished the big stuff by then! Of course it's not the end of the world if I don't, but it will definitely be helpful to give them my mountain of books and some plant pots etc rather than have to take them there myself on the bus.

The children (ages 2 & 4) went through their toys tonight and chose a whole heap of them to go to the charity shop Shock. Some baby toys we still had that they've grown out of, and a few other things which I'm pretty sure they are going to want later. DP and I decided to give away almost all the things they said they didn't want, but keep a few in reserve which we are sure the 2yo will want again. Not to discourage her from Kondoing but I don't think she really understood what was going on Wink In any case they still have a mountain of things to play with, nobody will be going without around here, that's for sure.

If anyone has Audible you can delete audiobooks from there too, but you need to either call/email/online chat with them and tell them what you want to delete. I've done it with a few books which I hated and it was too late to return, or which were no longer relevant (eg pregnancy meditations!)
