Thanks to peonies for the new thread, to spork for the links, and to everyone for keeping the momentum going. No kondo progress here today - Early to work and late back - but I'm going to start boxing books this weekend Shock Grin Plus, there's a tonne of stuff ready for the chazza.

standingonlego · 09/01/2015 22:30

I had an spare 5 mins so investigated the wicker baskets which live under the coffee table...winner of oldest useless bit of paperwork DH credit card statement from April 2004 Hmm

Violettatrump · 09/01/2015 23:03

Well done girls!

Now wish me luck for my kids rooms tomorrow. Their clothes are done but they have twenty million teddies and trinkets

OliviaRinHerts · 09/01/2015 23:41

Can I join please?

I saw this thread a few weeks ago and borrowed the book from the library (had to wait as it was already out).

I've not read the whole book and am working my way through the threads but I've got rid of tonnes of DVDs and will hopefully get £33 from music magpie for them.

Going to look at CDs and books tomorrow! Am very excited.

The book said it was cheating to keep old clothes but label them/use them for lounge wear. I'm struggling with this as I need lounge wear in the winter Hmm

iknowimcoming · 09/01/2015 23:52

Phew, I'm knackered! Kondoed all ds's clothes got two chazza bags from his stuff alone, best find was a pair of shorts aged 4-5 in his drawer (he's 13 Blush) ds said it looks like he's had a visit from the OCD fairy! Feeling really good though, ds and dd done and going to crack on with mine tomorrow Grin

Pointlessfan · 10/01/2015 07:18

Grin at the OCD fairy!!

Violettatrump · 10/01/2015 07:31

I just wanted to mention that kondoing really does work! I've gone from a total messy household with piles of mixed stuff here and it being a nightmare to get on top of - to a nicely ordered pleasant straightforward tidy one in which tidying/cleaning is a piece of cake.

PeoniesforMissAnnersley · 10/01/2015 07:44

It definitely works, my drawers have stayed tidy for months now. It does take more time each day to stop and fold things, but it completely avoids the huge pile o' shame which used to build up on the chair until it was taller than me and then I'd spend agggges sorting and putting stuff away.
Also having stuff all visible is making it clear what clothes just don't get worn, so I foresee getting rid of even more stuff until I have only the things I wear often. Right now I have lots of lovely items which I thought brought joy when I wrnt through but which somehow never make it onto my back!

That's great to hear Violetta and Peonies! Busy morning here but I'm hoping to do my clothes this afternoon as well as getting all the Christmas stuff back in the loft, have a good day all x

themummyonthebus · 10/01/2015 08:35

Blimey, two nights off MN due to some intensive kondoing and you're all already on the next thread!

We are also not following the strict order. I did my clothes first to get into the swing of it but dh refuses as he had a bit of a clean out not too long ago and got rid of the worst offenders. I've also almost finished the bathroom but we started on the books together last week and got rid of 7 boxes full, plus a box of komono. The last two days have been spent emptying the spare room of boxes still packed from our move 9 months ago! Strictly speaking I suppose we should just chuck it all but there are some things I need that are in there somewhere.

Unfortunately the first couple of boxes out were komono, which I had no problem with but dh really struggled with (magnetic game leaving present from his friends at uni that he hasn't opened or played with one in the 20 years we've been together? "But it was a gift!") so we put them aside and got cracking on the boxes of books. Oh god, so many! After two nights relentless sorting we have only half emptied the room, have another 7 boxes of books, 3 boxes of komono (my stuff), 5 boxes of paper recycling and 2 bin bags. We were like this -> ShockShock when we'd finished last night, and dh also Grin but we've so got half the room to empty, another 4 bookshelves to Kondo and I've just realised this morning that he's started putting boxes of things "we don't need to Kondo" in the study. I've already chucked 3 board games and 2 jigsaws from that pile but I can't get to it all properly. Tbf we do just need to clear the room so we can get decorating but it's annoying to keep moving stuff around that we have no intention of keeping.

I made huge inroads into paperwork last night too. I chucked nearly all of my uni notes and just kept a few things that particularly pleased me, like my engineering drawing tutorials, for sentimental reasons. Looking through my notes I was pretty Sad that I understand almost nothing of it any more, goodness knows how I got my degree! But I've just been headhunted into a great position, lots more money and after having a bit of a wobble this week I spoke to my new boss yesterday and was just "there", in the groove/mojo/whatever you call it so I know I'm doing the right thing and I'm perfect for the position. I think it made it easier to let the uni stuff go as I know I don't need to prove myself now (although hr do want to see my degree certificate Wink )

One thing I did over the holidays was sort out dc craft and drawing things so they can help themselves. Dc1 is currently helping me Kondo some of the spare paper from last night's efforts by drawing tractors on it. Can go into the recycling when he's done Blush

One thing that is annoying is that our recycling is picked up on a Thursday so we've gone two weeks without a pickup over the holidays Angry The bin is tiny and this week's pick up has only made a tiny dent in the recycling to go out. We can take paper to the tip but they don't do plastics recycling annoyingly. I did put some outside in bin bags but the aggressive tom cat that lives around here and terrorizes or cats sprayed them so that option's out now Angry

Well, the goal is to finish emptying the spare room this weekend. Can't wait!

JKSLtd · 10/01/2015 08:41

Themummy - sounds like you are doing better than your dh! Mine hasn't even tried to start as he's been ill/in hosp since I started.
He's interested though so I'm hopeful.

Our rubbish days just get moved not cancelled? Anyway I've just put it out and really enjoyed the feeling of getting rid. Big bag of textiles. And loads of recycling from the fridge & some cupboards clearout yesterday.

Not sure I'll get much done today as need to do a food shop and go and visit dh. And hopefully wave off pil who I think I've persuaded to go home today.

(Feeling extra mean though as milking brought me tea & a bacon sandwich in bed!)

Woolly I have a similar issue with too many fitted wardrobes for tonnes of hanging space and only one bit of tiddly drawers.
I'm hoping once dh gets on board hell realise that after 10 years of putting up with the monstrosities we could remove (sell?give away somehow?) them and get decent smaller sensible ones either fitted or freestanding.

stiffstink · 10/01/2015 09:29

We have a load of crap outside our house, old pallets, old doors, scaffolding, it looks awful. Like Onslow's house in Keeping Up Appearances.

I tell delivery people "its the one with all the crap outside" so I think that is DH's kondo job this weekend.DH's j

MrsMook · 10/01/2015 11:00

We've had the same issue with rubbish collection too. Recyclables were picked up this week. I ended up stamping in the bin a couple of times to pack it all down. Still a few more dayso until the black bin which hasn't been emptied since 22nd December. I've got away with it with switching to full time use of my cloth nappies.

Someone asked about school. It doesn't impact on me too much as I keep most of my work in work and use the maximum nursery time. When I bring marking home, it stays in my bag. We don't use many books so there's not many copies of those needed, and stationary is in my craft cupboard anyway. When we moved to this house, we decided not to havea study as that was a terrible clutter zone. The play room was marketed as a bedroom and had wardrobes so we filled them with shelves and most if what was the study goes in there. A lot of files went in the loft, and most have now gone to the dump as they hadn't been used in so long, and the knowledge is out there to access again if needed.

misscph1973 · 10/01/2015 11:22

Someone asked in the beginning of this thread what to do with receipts. If you have a scanner (many printers do) you can scan them all an store them digitally. Before I got a printer with a scanner I took photos of receipts. ebay post receipts got photographed immediately and forwarded to buyer, so there was a record of it for later. If you use gmail, use Drafts folder for storing the scanned receipts (in an e-mail draft). Dropbox is good for digital storage as well.

Violettatrump · 10/01/2015 11:27

Just reporting in.

DS1's bedroom progress. Piles and piles of books all sorted. Next on to trinkets, cuddly toys, toiletries. He's not a naturally motivated/tidy chap and on a couple of occasions has slunk off to read on the loo Shock

HermioneGrangerHair · 10/01/2015 11:53

Our bins were collected almost normally over Christmas, but I'm still counting down the days (5...) till general rubbish goes again, and I can start another burst of throwing away. I might have some competition for the space by then... Husband is clearly revving up for some clearing out himself! This thing is definitely contagious, and totally addictive.

I've just done a charity shop run, spilling over with stuff I was proud to give them. I'll admit, I had a bit of a wobble about one particularly nice handbag, until the women in the charity shop cooed with delight over how much it might raise, which gave me a better feeling than owning it ever did!

In other news, I had cleaned the bathroom (so easy without all the crap to tidy up first), put on some washing (taking much more proactive care of my clothes now that there are fewer and I actually like them), put on the dishwasher, and having a coffee before hoovering. I've got a loooong way to go, but I'm already seeing some of the benefits that our veteran konverts have reported.

HermioneGrangerHair · 10/01/2015 11:58

JKS, all this work you're putting in will make your home so much more restful for your husband to come back to when he's ready to be discharged! He might not be able to join in, but I bet he'll appreciate it.

ItIsntJustAPhase · 10/01/2015 12:01

Thank you so much for encouragement everyone. I love reading your stories.

iknowimcoming · 10/01/2015 12:26

Little things make me happy! Ds remarked in the car earlier how nice it was to choose some stripey socks this morning rather than just taking the ones at the top of the drawer Grin

themummyonthebus · 10/01/2015 12:43

JKS that sounds like a plan for the wardrobes! And I hope your DH continues on the path to recovery.

For those of you with inadapted wardrobes, could you add some drawers in some of the hanging or shelf space? We have big slide-y built ins but without innards. We've used some old ivar for dc1's and we'll use some more ikea stuff for dc2's. Like that we can mix and match - they'll not just have clothes in but will have some clothes storage too.

themummyonthebus · 10/01/2015 12:46

Aw, bless your ds iknow!

MsBug · 10/01/2015 12:49

Those of you with built in wardrobes, could you put a chest of drawers or some shelves inside?

lightningstrikes · 10/01/2015 12:50

Just to report a minor miracle. I came downstairs this morning and DH has spontaneously kondoed his DVDs! He also had a bag of shoes to go to charity and has agreed to let me help kondo his drawers (on the promise that he doesn't have to get rid of anything). Dh has hording tendencies whilst I am ruthless with stuff, so he has been generally grumpy about my kondoing spurt. I'm hoping that he will find clothing that he can part with so that I can get the top of the wardrobe cleared off.
