Dishwashers -- Miele or Bosch

TalkingTree2 · 07/01/2015 13:44

My old dishwasher has just packed up, and I have around £500 to spend on a new one. For £499 I can get a get Bosch Logixx machine (SMS69L32GB) or if I spend £50 more (once I factor in their cash back scheme) I can get a Miele (G4920BK) from John Lewis. I've never owned anything Miele before, but I know people rave about their build quality and service. Does anyone have any experience of either of these, or any other recommendations? Thanks.

I loved my Bosch dishwasher - had it with no problems for 7-8 years when I very reluctantly left it behind when I moved house, still working as at day 1.
Daughter's MIL has a Miele which is fantastic and probably worth the extra £50. If her Miele washing machine and tumble drier are anything to go by the dishwasher will last for ever!

EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard · 07/01/2015 14:00

My Miele washing-tumble dry machine is vintage and worth every penny. My fully integrated Miele dishwasher seemed to be a Friday afternoon model that I had lots of problems with, luckily all under guarantee as we had to have lots of call outs to fix it, but I'm not so impressed with performance. The old Neff one I inherited was better.

In chatting with one engineer and asking him to be totally honest with me, it was his opinion that if he were buying a washing machine he'd definitely go for Miele, but a dishwasher he'd choose Bosch/Neff/Siemens brand.
That said, repairs are more expensive on a fully integrated machine and the case of free standing Miele machines is of very high quality.

I wouldnt buy from John lewis - delivery is a nightmare and several posts on here will confirm this

I used a o dot com and found them far better

I have a beko though and am delighted with it as it is by far the best dishwasher I have used in the last thirty years

murphys · 07/01/2015 14:07

I would go for the Miele. I have just replaced my dishwasher with a Miele last year. I have had 3 dishwashers in 6 years with other makes. This one washes the nicest, stacks the nicest and it the quietest as well.

I definitely think that the extra 50 is worth it...

My washing machine is now 17 years old, tumble dryer is 13 years old. Both Miele, washing machine had a switch replaced in all those years and washes daily.

magimedi · 07/01/2015 14:16

My last Miele dishwasher was 19 years old when I left it in a house we had sold and was still going strong. It had also had 3 moves.

My Miele washing machine died in November after 18 years with no faults, ever.

dementedpixie · 07/01/2015 14:19

I have a Bosch Logixx and it is 4 years old and has had no issues so far. I like the cutlery tray at the top and it is nice and quiet. I second ao.com for appliances - quick delivery and normally reasonably priced

WellTidy · 07/01/2015 15:08

I must have the same Bosch dishwasher as demented. I love mine too. Had it for 4 1/2 years and it is working as well as it did on the first day. We bought it through BHS online if I remember rightly, much cheaper than everywhere else, and they delivered very quickly too.

PigletJohn · 07/01/2015 15:39

I've always understood that Miele washers are the most reliable. There was a Which survey the other day, that confirmed it, but it said that Siemens is best for dishwashers. Their top pick is the SN26T296GB which may be above your budget, but look online. They say that Bosch and Neff are just as reliable as Siemens (they are all made by the same company) but Siemens d/wrs are best on test. John Lewis often have special offers such as free extended guarantee, cashback, or "trade-in" discounts.

I have one (older model), I'd say it is just a more upmarket Bosch, they usually get new advances first.

greeneggsandsocks · 07/01/2015 17:04

I managed to get a Miele with 5 years free warranty for only £50 more than the Bosh that I had decided upon, I got it from a local independent though and the delivery was really good so if you are not sure about the service from JL (I've never had any problems myself) it might be worth looking locally.

TalkingTree2 · 07/01/2015 18:38

Thank you so much for all your comments, and for Ivykaty's recommendation of ao.com, they have the same models as John Lewis at about £20 cheaper.

I'm leaning towards a Miele, mainly because I am keen on the idea of a machine that lasts 20 years. Actually, 10 would be good, as it will be intensively used (big family). I'm more interested in build quality and a decent performance than lots of programmes and whizz-bang 'improvements'.

Our machine that has just died is a Neff (bought with the house) it was OK, not marvellous. Previously I had a Siemens, which was also fine. But I wasn't particularly devoted to either.

Greeneggsandsocks, I would like to buy from a local independent but we are newish to the area and I don't really know any here. I've looked on Yell.com, and there are some local shops listed, but it's hard to know which are good. Perhaps I should post on Mumsnet Local for recommendations.

Talking Tree when I bought our last Miele machine I found the nearest local stockist and rang them with the cheapest internet price I'd found, they matched the price, installed the machine and took the old broken one away for us. Worth a try for the time it takes to ring.

Eastwickwitch · 07/01/2015 21:28

Get the Miele with the cutlery tray on the top, they're brilliant.

stealthsquiggle · 07/01/2015 21:33

Miele for the longer warranty and the cutlery drawer which is the best thing ever

dementedpixie · 07/01/2015 21:37

bosch logixx has a tray too

DramaAlpaca · 07/01/2015 21:43

I had a Bosch which lasted for 18 years with no faults. I replaced it last year with another Bosch which I'm happy with. I'd have got a Siemens if I could've got one within my budget, but Bosch came a close second.

DustBunnyFarmer · 07/01/2015 21:45

Our Bosch dishwasher has just gone to the great dishwasher god in the sky after 9 1/2 years. It was very reliable. We've just bought a Siemens and it doesn't feel nearly as robust as our old Bosch. Visitors often commented on how quiet our Bosch was - great if you have an open plan kitchen/diner.

DustBunnyFarmer · 07/01/2015 21:46

Incidentally, after our Siemens was unpacked and installed, I realised it has a partially plastic interior. Are dishwashers with a plastic inner really at much higher risk for causing a domestic fire? (Someone told me this recently & now I'm twitching about running the dishwasher overnight.)

Happypiglet · 07/01/2015 21:51

Had both, prefer Meile... Because of the cutlery tray which is quite simply the best thing EVER invented... Much more room on bottom level for pans and unloading is a dream if you zone as you load....

dementedpixie · 07/01/2015 21:55

I have said a couple of time already - the bosch also has a cutlery tray so not just a feature of miele

Fluffycloudland77 · 07/01/2015 21:59

I've just looked at that miele in JL, buy it. Buy it NOW.

It's ultra cheap on electric & water. Half a kw is about 6p per load, half what my crappy electrolux uses.

Stupid house builders buying electrolux appliances Angry

TalkingTree2 · 07/01/2015 22:01

Sadly, I think the Mieles with the cutlery trays are the more expensive ones. The ones I'm looking at are the ones with baskets. Why are the trays so good?

wonkylegs · 07/01/2015 22:07

I've had Bosch, Neff, Smeg & Miele dishwashers
Bought the Bosch & Miele , I got the other two in houses we bought.
The Miele is the best hands down, although the Bosch wasn't bad. The neff didn't wash that well & the Smeg caught on fire.
Since I've had the Miele, I'd automatically buy one again.
Reliable, fantastic at cleaning (even with Morrison's dishwasher tabs which according to Which are a don't buy) and quiet and fabulously clear adjustable legs to make fitting a breeze.

TalkingTree2 · 07/01/2015 22:47

Wow, Fluffy, that's a great find. Thank you very much.

But still, can anyone explain why a tray is better? Does it wash the cutlery better? Or is it because it frees up space in the lower tray, since there is no cutlery basket there? My worry is that a cutlery tray will reduce the 'headroom' in the lower trays to the extent that dinner plates etc will not fit easily. (Perhaps I should head off to a dishwasher showroom armed with plates, wineglasses etc, to see how they all fit…)
